Vox v847 wah

hello, i tried a vox wah the other day at city music together with a vox amp and felt that it sounded great, but i had one concern.

it gets too ear piercing and sharp when the pedal is all the way stepped down, and the guy which served me told me i could have the capacitor changed. could you guys enlighten me on which capacitor or how i can get it changed so that it would sound less sharp? thanks for reading.

either capacitor changed OR just readjust the pot gear position to make it travel to less trebly places.

I saw the new 847 and the construction have changed a lot compared to the old ones. best it comes with a 9V socket! old vox wah users had to fork out more to mod that option in.

also the inductor used is different from the old ones but the old ones were probably generic Crybaby inductors but as manufacturing goes... for all you know the new inductor is probably the old inductor inside a plastic shell. Never know till scrutinised in detail.

Yours must be the V847-A rite?

Personally i fine it ok. The wah range sounds thick and full, without sounding too excessively trebly. This is of course compared to a crybaby 95 Q i used to own, which to me is rather trebly even when i adjust the Q control all the way down. Try a Dunlop wah and you'll know what i mean.

Edder is right....the new V847As come with internal trimpots which you can adjust the sweep range.

i havent bought it yet. i was originally intending to buy it after trying it but after i tried it, i wanted to come home and find out how i could rectify the part i was not too satisfied with first, before deciding whether to go back and buy it or not. also, it was out of stock for the time being and even purchasing it would mean having to wait til the next shipment arrived before i could get mine. so here i am trying to do my homework!

thanks edder for the comments, and ized, how do i know if mine (not mine, the one i tried) is a v847-A or not? i just tried the latest one available at city music. i think i will get it after all, since it only gets sharp to my ears when its played clean. with mild distortion on, the problem dissipates so thats really fine and cool. cheers guys!

hey gary,

check the barcode at the bottom of the box when you are buying. Mine says V847-A.

Most of the new Vox wahs are this edition, unless you got the super old stock, which is highly unlikely cos only the new wahs(like what edder mentioned) comes with 9VDC jacks, which the older incarnations would not carry. Check with CM's sales staff if you have any doubts.

If you find the wah too trebly when played clean, try using a compressor after the wah to smoothen out the dynamics. Personally i use a maxon optical comp to for funky, percussive strumming that does not sound overly harsh even when the pedal is depressed all the way toe down to full treble range.

sorry SOFT, I have to quote to make this thread clear. :???:

I didn't mention anything about trimpots.

What i meant is to adjust the POT position. Loosen the screw holding the white plastic thats pressing on to the black gear rack. Turn the pot slightly to move it more to the "bass" side. Replace the gear and tighten the screw.

thanks ized! for the suggestions, they seem really logical and i could take a point or two from you in the future, haha.

edder, so thats how easily its done? i dont know these engineering stuff about the 'nerves and muscles' of a pedal so i didnt really get what you were saying. i'm just a player so i guess i would look towards the buying more pedals kind of suggestion than to open a pedal and touch here touch there. anyway, thanks for the suggestion, guess i could get someone to help me out in that aspect, haha.

no problem Edd, i guess im not so much into terminology:D after all you are a pedal builder and i am a player.....My knowledge thus pales in comparision to yours! Pardon that small mix-up but yeah thanks for clearing things up....

Hey gary, no problems dude, was just sharing my experiences and stuff....I guess i can relate my experiences with gear as a player.... but if you want technical stuffs and how-tos, the guys to go to are still edd and goose....hehe

Ized, no worries. I'm just afraid that everyone will be looking for trimpots inside the Vox wah just because Ized said Edder said so...

uhm... its so easy to do it, its hard to explain.

1) Open up the wah.
2) You'll see the pot with gears on it and another gear connnected to it.
3) Move the pedal up and down to see how they interact.
4) Basicly just adjust the pot by 2-3 teeth so that when the wah pedal is fully down, its not so trebly.

oh and gary, you gotta have a wah in front of you to be able to understand what I'm talking about.

that said it all, edder! haha i havent bought it yet but will be getting it soon, no more worries about anything since you guys here has cleared it up! it should be manageable i guess,

and thanks shredcow too, for that cool, informative and WORDY site! hope it helps!

many thanks guys!

new stock as in next shipment or new model? next shipment im not too sure, but city music has a cool sexy awesome powerful magnificent policy that says that for the month of december, you can purchase a product at the sale price even if its out of stock, and collect it when the next shipment comes, even if its after the sale period. cool.

havent bought yet, i just got back from overseas.
the previous shipment came in yesterday, wednesday. if its already out of stock, then i'll get it at the NEXT shipment. its a rather good wah nevertheless, especially with mild overdrive, i feel. its balanced. clean, its prominent.

i just got this wah from the citymusic sale...
yes, it is way too harsh. to smoothen it, i have to tone down on my guitar in order for my ears not to bleed.

edder, i tried your way too... first time i opened up a pedal. i tried moving the pot by 2 teeth, just nice such that the high end is still there, but not piercing. kinda proud of myself! (i'm a pure noob)

however, with gain its weird... i cant figure out how to use it properly with gain. just that i find if u want a biting sound, the higher frequencies cannot be completely gone.. higher frequencies when together with gain, helps your wah bite more. RARR. WAHH.

Where do you place the wah? Before or after your gain pedals?

What are your gain pedals?

with wah pedals, don't play with it like a manual sewing machine. Full up - Full down - Full up - Full down.

I've seen many pro guitarist make so called vanilla flavoured wahs SCREAM. Its all about finding the sweet spot and play around it.
