the WARMEST od sound!

hey softies!

do you guys mind sharing your 'secret' setups for your impression of the warmest sounding od / distortion here? this would allow other musicians to experiment with your setup, or probably find their own favourite setup through yours!

some points to include:
- the pedal you're using
- the setup (eg. tone 11 oclock, gain 4 oclock, with min at around 7 oclock and max at around 5 oclock)
- maybe even your guitar / amp!

remember, not your favourite sound, but the warmest sound! so if you're a metal player, dont offer your fuzz setup, haha.

oh well, you could share your favourite setup here too, but state that it's your favourite and not youre impression of the warmest!

well, i'll do one for cleans.
no pedals, just my amp and guitar and pups only.

Amp: Crate Blue Voodoo 60w combo with 12ax7 preamp tubes and JJ 6L6 power tubes.

Setting: Treble 5, Mids 6, Bass 4. Reverb 3, Presence 4

Pickups: generally pups with A2 mags are warmer sounding than with A5 or ceramic. But most of mine are A5. My pups used for this: V-Paf bridge, Hum from hell neck.

Guitar: Mahogany guitars have a characteristic of thicker bass and mids. my guitar: Les Paul

I've got a pedal that gives me fat warm tones all the time. It's the old green Nobels odr-1. A TS-clone, but I like it a whole lot better than all the other TS types that I've heard. The best (worse maybe?) selling point of the pedal is it's spectrum control, which works differently compared to the usual tone knob.

And if you can find one, they can still be had for pretty cheap. I got mine pretty cheap.

my amp's EQ setting plays a big part in my 'warmth', in any channels, they will be:

Treble: 2/ Midrange: 8/ Bass: 6

lets take it further by having a the warmest combination that is of certain clarity and able to cut thru in a band setting of reasonable jamming volume

Somehow, all the warmnest seem to disappear when playing in a band with another guitarer plus the rest of the instrument.

Barber direct drive super sport
(phat juicy marshall crunch and smooth solo tones with RC booster)


Rodenberg 828
( compressed smooth solo tones from 909 side and ts-9ish mild od side i use as a boost)


Keeley Ts808
(low gain riffs and chords/ licks ala john mayer. a "must have" pedal.)


recently added Banzai fireball2
( transparent OD, good for chords and rythm, really retains guitar's tonal character but... may get lost in mix during solos)

Amp: Treb 6-7, Bass 6, Mid 4-5 (typical fender amp setting)

Pedals for warm OD:

Analogman TS808 Silver - creamy low gain smoothness...for John Mayer type tones..works like a dream.

Barber Direct Drive (current edition) - Marshally sounding, pretty smooth for compressed OD sound

I've tried the TS808 + Barber DD = Nice crunchy distortion on my Hot Rod Deville, but not nice on a Marshall AVT50...

RC booster - always on

Blackstone OD - can also do warm, tight, creamy OD on the brown channel, particularly when coupled with a TS type pedal.

Guitar: Neck single coil pup of my strat...

Fuzz into overdrive/distortion.

Get the right overdrive/dist pedal and you have good eq that still enables you to cut thru the band's mix.

Get a DS1 and turn the tone to 0, hahaha... hahahahaha.... but nice for home recording ya?
