The typical indie sound

i'm not sure the bands you've mentioned are typically indie. Is there a british vs american indie?

From the brit perspective, there are some typical indie guitar picking styles from the smiths and stone roses, which are more twangy rockabilly phrases and the shoegazer type sounds from chapterhouse, my bloody valentine, jesus and mary chain.

But basically if you're moving from a metal background, the important bit is how you strum, and open string sounds.
