And the olden days mat rocker reminds me of deep purple, van halen era.Well theres one who works at the barber shop near my house that area.He always plays slow rock songs or rock ballads on his stereo and he dresses like those rocker from the 1970s,cowboy boots, long hair, jeans.

as much as i wana say that the fashion plays a part, i think the MUSIC plays a more major role other than fashion.. and the music is the one that should be relived and be shown as an example, not entirely the fashion.. because apparently, with more fashion than the passion, the mat rocker is just more of a mat than a rocker, if u get wat i mean..

we're already 20-30 yrs past that fashion era, let the fashion rest in the past and bring the music to the future, isn't that better? i usually see these mat rock dudes at Jurong MRT, all i can think of is that those dudes reminds me more of a matrep than a rocker..

anyways, this is just my opinion.. cheers!

Those were the days...been there and done that.

Good write up though the writer (whom I knew from some events that she did at my workplace, she's hot!) didnt cover the whole context of MAT ROCK. Based on my own personal experience, was in my early twenties during the early 80's and all I can say it's SEX, DRUG, FASHION & LOTS of HEAVY METAL! I was "based" in Geylang Bahru / Boon Keng and Tanglin Halt for a while (block 37 if I can recall). Boot cut Levis jeans, Rayban shade, leather belt with big buckle, Kickers leather boot and the sotong hairstyle... Who will forget Groove Makers studio for jamming sessions...ah, they even sponsor their band equipment during my wedding..

National Theatre was the biggest venue for big concerts and you may use "tiket daun" to watch the show from the hill top with a bird view of the stage. Clearly remembered the MC requesting some audience to stop "berdengung" (smokinn pot) during one of the show.

The only chances for young bands to showcase their talant was through a handfull of competitions, expos and wedding ceremonies with the most memorable experience is when my band took part in a battle of the band in JB with LEFT HANDED also in the competion. Amy (with his JB band, not search) was also took part. Young Man Kidal was humble and he's awesome for an 18 yrs old.

SWEET CHARITY, with their success in producing albums and whom I think revolutionised the local rock music scene of the 80's which was followed vigourously by our neighbour, Malaysia plays a very big part in the birth of MAT ROCK. And tnot to mention the rest of the bands like Unwanted, Rusty Blade and others.

I still keep my hair long till today and still enjoy and play the kind if music I like cause I'll never enough of Deep Purple, Rainbow, Rush, ACDC, Whitesnake, Led Zeppelin to name a few.

Long Live Rock & Roll and to MAT ROCK too!

those are the exact same bands i am crazy abt. and i'm chinese.

An interesting thread it is though it has been around for sometimes only me didn't noticed.

I was also called a Mat Rock in my teens. First of all, my dressing, my music, my attitude, my everything. Hehehehe!! What what the article wrote wrong was....many Mat Rock are educated unlike the earlier days when most people are iliterate irregardless of race. I was in the era of the 80's and the music that I listen and play is still the 70's.

We rockers...don't forget our roots. Even after I came back from studies abroad, I still sport that long hair and mingles with the Mat rock without any barrier. But when, I got higher level in my career....I have to sacrifice my hair for that corporate look. But the music...still Rock!! But now....back with my old attitude who don't care about career no more. I'm back sporting long hair....good that the company I work with has that hip lifestyle. People are accepting more than the earlier days. That's true, last time men with long hair will be serve last. But all that has changed. Thank god!

I'm not that career minded these days as age has caught hold of me. I'm just a happy Mat Rocker who has a job, family and friends.

Saluti!
Tetragrammaton

The Malays called me - Mat Rock
The Chinese called me - Ah Lock
Those were the times of Chicago!!

But friends called me - Faz or Tetra

Let the fashion rest? you refering to the hair issue? Some male musicians will never cut their hair la. When you see those mat dudes at Jurong MRT? is it 2008 or 1988?
