The HEAVY METAL thread!

^well that may be your personal point of view, but i'm sure that each and every individual has a totally different perception of that altogether.

In general, IMO, metalheads tend to rip on "sellout" bands and different genres will rip on each other. Eg, death and black metal "brutal" metallers will hate power metallers, and rip on genres like rap metal, nu-metal etc.

Hardly surprising though. I call it "metal elitism" and i get that kinda discussions with friends all the time. TS is so doing everyone a favour by bringing it here. thanks metalhead!

Chillax dudes, from me personally, its fine to think if a group/band is a particular genre. Slipknot does have that heavy sounding to their songs thus most people, even me think its metal at first listen. But if you really go deep into the hat thats where it all gets complicated. Trying to find out what they really are..... hell we may never know. Either check out their myspace or ask them personally.
We have our own personal tastes, keep it that way, coz thats what makes us different from each other.

peace~

Perhaps you need to change your mindset about this.
A thread created specifically for this would be good, as it avoid truckloads of anonymous 'metal' threads. You can start your own Slipknot thread if this doesn't please you...
It's either you come here to read and give a try at the recommendations given by other, or you stick to your own world, thinking that slipknot is metal... -_-

The people who post here, they are not purists...

Uh before you only quote this post, I did make recommendations, and also took some myself. I'm not just pointing out slipknot in my post, am I? It'll avoid countless anonymous ''metal' threads because people will weed out the sub genres and disregard it.

I'm not saying everyone is, but obviously when you rise up above the well, you tend to see many other things.

PS: It's your loss (to everyone), if you want to contain yourself to 'true kvlt metalz' because we know, you know, everyone knows, you're missing out on alot more.

bluepowder: I agree, sometimes people forget what music is all about, and just want it to be made their way or they disregard it. ;)

Interestingly enough

Wiki says:

Heavy metal purists, also called "metal elitists", often show great distaste for more mainstream forms of heavy metal, such as glam metal and nu metal. Metal purists are most prevalent in the black metal scene, often rejecting bands for deviating from the "true" black metal sound.

A genre (pronounced /ˈʒɑːnrə/, also /ˈdʒɑːnrə/; from French "kind" or "sort", from Latin: genus (stem gener-)) is a loose set of criteria for a category of composition; the term is often used to categorize literature and speech, but is also used for any other form of art or utterance.

Genres are vague categories with no fixed boundaries, they are formed by sets of conventions, and many works cross into multiple genres by way of borrowing and recombining these conventions. The scope of the word "genre" is sometimes confined to art and culture, particularly literature, but it has a long history in rhetoric as well. In genre studies the concept of genre is not compared to originality. Rather, all works are recognized as either reflecting on or participating in the conventions of genre.

Genres are often divided into subgenres. Literature, for example, is divided into three basic kinds of literature, which are the classic genres of Ancient Greece: poetry, drama, and prose. Poetry may then be subdivided into epic, lyric, and dramatic. Subdivisions of drama includes foremost comedy and tragedy, while eg. comedy itself has subgenres, including farce, comedy of manners, burlesque, satire, and so on. However, any of these terms would be called "genre", and its possible more general terms implied.

To all the purists...I just have to say....metal is a subgenre of music....by your hypothesis, there are more people claiming metal to be a a degraded form of music and hence it must not be considered a form of music....dont unconsciously follow down the path u chose to avoid....just listen to everything!!!! Have your favourites...but a discussion of what is and isnt...is pointless...

+1 to this.....to purists out there.... "metal" bashing is just so over? Get over it already.

I'll just continue listening to Death, Megadeth, Blind Guardian, old Metallica, Dragonforce, Sonata Artica, Iced Earth and Maiden

Doesn't mean a genre has the word 'metal' in it defines that they are a metal band. Don't you know these days there are tons of hybrid genres that destroys the whole genre of metal?

Rap metal anyone?

dude, lighten up man. i don't see people bashing the music you like. so why bash the music other people like? but hey, i'm just saying. you can do what you want with your life. i've no right to tell you what to do. peace:mrgreen:

Any 'metal' band that does not show clear influences from genres which are very clearly antimetal such as pop and hip hop. Crusties(Crustpunkers) are fine though.

No wait, actually what defines metal, and any example of true metal bands?

In modern context, i don't think there is a band which is just plain heavy metal. Metal is a very diverse genre, every band has their own sound. Maybe back in the 70s you could call Black Sabbath downright heavy metal, but then again they do have a lot of blues influence as heard from their music. Even Ozzy said black sabbath first started out as a blues-rock band!

This thread doesn't exactly speak for itself as the title mentions, "Heavy Metal"

Kudos to those who made notable mentions though...

Anyway, Machine Head's a great band. The Blackening was probably one of the best releases in 2007.
