The amazing guitar bargaining skills

Since this sort of douchebaggery is condoned by some of you morons, I suppose you wont mind me asking you to pay more money than what was stated prior to the meet up?

Case in point. Neither should you ask me for a discount upon meet up. The cheek you must have.

Especially even more so when I've apparently already been nice enough to not make you travel "halfway across the island," to meet you at your convenience.

I guess discounts would be given depending on the approach of the buyer. If they tell me they don't have enough money, I will tell them to draw from the ATM.

end of the day, I feel the approach is important. never be demanding as a buyer. we are not paid to provide customer service.

Another lowballer story to tell:

I've had this guy stalking my port city amp which I was selling initially at 1.2k. He would keep on sms-ing me at least once a week on what would be the lowest price. Fortunately, I got some unerased messages so I saw it was always him.
First conversation:
+6598293556: What's ur lowest price for e port city amp?

Me: Hi, it's 1.1k.

+6598293556: No thanks.

So I told myself, "Ok, too high for him."

2nd conversation I could remember:
+6598293556: How much is the lowest price for e Port City amp?

**Around this time, I decided I'll pull the price down to a last price of 1k.
Me: 1k

+6598293556: Is that the lowest price you can give? I'm choosing between ur amp and an egnater.
Me: Yeah, it is.
+6598293556: The egnater is almost half of the price that you are selling your port city for.
Me: You should buy the egnater then.
+6598293556: I will.

Last night:
+6598293556: Will u take $600 for the port city amp? This is a serious offer wif ready cash.

**As expected, I knew one of this weeks he will sms again and that Egnater is just a cardboard box he fantasizes to be real. So I replied this morning:
Me: Dis is also a serious reply: i cn let it go 4 600sgd provided u perform these tricks: put a shovel inside ur mouth while juggling chainsaws atop a beach ball. While ur at it, go f@#k spiders!

I won't be surprised if this guy is also making a lot of lowball offers with other softies/g4c members.

What is wrong with people these days? I seriously feel that guitar stuff here in Singapore are actually cheaper compared to our neighbouring countries. These people seriously have no shame.

I love the comment on the bottom of that classified ad. lol... i think classified ad comments need "Like" buttons too. lol

Edgie,

I am the culprit and see your point. I apologise for any inconvenience caused. I will stop the lowballing from now on.

@tremolo

If you knew it was going to end up like this, why even try in the first place? Could have saved you a lot of trouble and some reputation.

Been a while since my last post.

Speaking of lowballing, I had one experience earlier this year. I was selling an acoustic simulator pedal for $50. This guy called me and wanted to pay the $50 in installments. The first thing that came to mind was he's a kid, or a secondary school student, or something like that. I said no to the installments, and even reduced the price to $40 so he could get it straight away, as I sensed that he really wanted it.

So we agreed on $40, and a meeting time and place. On the day itself, upon meet-up, he told me that he had only $30 in his wallet. See, if he was a student, I would let if off and say "alright, it's yours. But, don't ever give up learning guitar!" After which I'll go home and hope the kid enjoyed the pedal and that the pedal would motivate him to play better.

But the thing that struck me pretty bad was that he's not even close to what I pictured - a secondary school student, or younger; he was probably my age or older than me! And guess what, I'm 25. I'd fully expect someone older than me to be a professional working adult, not someone who agrees on $40 only to appear and then try to knock me off an extra $10! I was pissed, no doubt, but being me, I let it off.

I thought that was it - until I saw him post it up for sale about a few days to a week later. The best part is - he's selling it for $50. I PM-ed him something like "Trying to make a profit huh?" He never replied.

@mockingbird

all that trouble for $20? Geez, that guy must be living off table scraps. I feel for you man. Good will is being taken for granted.

Frankly if the idea of no money = no buy works in shops, why shouldnt it work here?

Damaged good? Condition not good enough? Then dont buy. If the price is agreed upon it should STAY on what was agreed upon. Any price lowering of next should be at the sellers discretion. No one else.

If shop X chooses to sell a second hand Gibson at 99999$ who are you to say anything about it as the buyer? Would the shop care what you think? Would they bother if you saw it as a rip off/daylight robbery? No they would tell you if you dont like the price or cant afford it dont buy it. Simple.

Bottom line as earlier mentioned by another forumite. No money = dont buy.

My suggestion to guys whom like to try their luck. Don't do it. You may not be as lucky as you think.
