california - basswood, standard - alder
california - if its like the affinity then nut is 1mm narrower
california - has cheap looking black silkscreen logo on headstock
california - 21 frets vs 22 on standard
california - has some dunno what pickups vs alnicos on standard
california - plain neckplate

thanks man. they dont seem like a good buy hehehe

i think ill just stikc with standard :)

also like most cheap guitars, quality control is not there.

i tried two cali squier strats and one tele.
the tele had badly cut nut, plus the cali ones the strings are top loading.
from the two strats, one had a bad fret job with sharp edges sticking out.
the other strat tho was quite nice, be a very good beginner's guitar.
nice satin finish neck.
it feels much better than the high gloss finish on the SX, unless of cos its the SX ash series with its nice satin neck :p

the entry level models for MIJ teles sport basswood bodies, better models have alder or ash..it's a pretty neutral wood, not inherently bright like alder and it'll reflect more of your pickups' nature..but teles are meant to cut through anyway..shouldn't be an issue..

i wouldn't dismiss the baswood body Jap units as entry-level. i recently chose one over an alder unit. more importantly, try one out & hear if it has something for you.

i saw the squier california series... has different pickups. not the usual covered single coil for the neck

looks and feels cheap (well it is cheap selling only for 300 at ranking)

my Fender Japan tele is basswood and loaded with bill lawrence pickups. Those who played it during TAGS, comments please.

neck humbucker pup was sweet. defintely will cut, q filter brings it from sweet mellow to a nice spank. and the goldtop rocks.

Can I say the wood is only 10% of the equation while pickups are 80% with the 10% for mojo factors?

true.
but what if the guitar with better wood has the same pickups etc?
wont that make that guitar better still?

point is you still need a good base.
else guitars with fibreglass bodies, or balsa wood would be real popular.
