Tama vs Pearl

Dear softies,

My earlier thread on drum gear was deleted. I hope the moderator can advise why.

Anyway, can you share which shops in Singapore carry the above 2 brands? In terms of range, e.g. if I want to add a third or fourth tom floor tom or a second bass drum, or buy extra attachments/hardware, which shop and brand offers better availability?

Thanks

Swee lee carries both Tama and Pearl kits. For add ons to your kit, you'll have to get the higher end range of kits. Maybe you could try Tama Superstar or Starclassic? If im not mistaken, your previous thread stated that your budget was $2k right? The Tama superstar is at around 1.9k (double check with sweelee!) which fits the bill but you're gonna have to top up for cymbals and add ons.
Are you going to use your kit for recording/gigging of any sort? If it is just going to be for home practice, why dont you get a cheaper but decent kit and find second hand add ons? You could probably get a Pearl Forum or Gretsch Catalina Club and then have extra toms from Tama, Pearl, Premier and such? It would save you alot and you could spend your money on high end cymbals instead! Haha. As for extra hardware, stands and such, you could get them at Ranking. Ranking carries Gibraltar hardware which includes stands, drum hoops, tension rods, felts, washers etcetc. Any spare parts that you need for your kit, you could probably get it from there. Haha.

Hope this helps!
All the best in getting your kit!

Dear Namrehs (or is it Sherman??),

Thanks for the reply! I have always thought Swee Lee's prices are bit on the high side? I don't mind going to different shops for each of Pearl and Tama. My intention is to fit out my kit so that it has 2 kick drums, 2 power size toms and 2 floor toms macam Aldridge. I have storage space in my office and it is also used for practising and performing with my office band.

Because of 2 bass drums I will need to look for attachments to fit the hihat (with legs folded) to my left kick. So if I were to get Pearl drums, then it will be Pearl pedals, Pearl hardware etc. Likewise with Tama Superstar, fitted out with 2 Iron Cobras etc. So I would actually need to find a supplier that I am comfortable with and is able to bring in stuff for me.

Apart from Swee Lee, I have seen some Pearl kits at Ranking as well as School Of Music Clef (Suntec, Jimmy Lee teaches there). Does Nigel have any Tama Superstar or Pearl Kits?

For rock playing (in the vein of Tommy Aldridge, Mike Terrana, early Deen Castronovo) which brand would you kindly recommend?

The Pearl kit I saw at Ranking actually has black drum hoops which I thought were really sweet. I wonder where else can I find such kits?

I have made up my mind to get Paiste cymbals (old school rock!!) so I guess I would have to go Ranking?

I am a working family guy so have some flexibility in terms of budget.

Do you or anyone here have any comments or input please? Thank you ery much and Happy New Year!!

Sherman it is. Haha.
Head down to swee lee during a sale! They just had a year end sale at their Katong showroom a few days back. Im not sure if kits are discounted but if they are, it should be pretty reasonable. Haha. Im not really sure where else do they carry Pearl or Tama but i guess swee lee is going to be the most convenient since they carry alot of the brands' products. Music clef carries Pearl kits but their supplier is swee lee so i guess it doesnt make a difference. You could call them up and compare the prices though! The last time i went to Drum Resources, i believe i saw a Tama/Yamaha kit. Not really sure what kit is it exactly but you could give Nigel a call to check! Also, for the hi-hats, both Pearl and Tama have two-legged hi-hat stand models so you dont have to worry about fitting your hi-hat next to your secondary bass drum!
If you didnt know, Eric aka RudimentalDrummer is selling his entire Paiste collection! New signatures, signatures and twenty series. If you're interested, you could look him up! He is giving really good prices for brand new cymbals.
