What have YOU done for your beloved Singapore music scene/ industry?

I am extremely disgusted, abhorred and bloody annoyed.

How the bleep can you expect people to come down, to pay and watch your band, purchase your merchandise or attend your gig when you don't even bother to go for anyone else's! Evidently you would have to be jaw-droppingly immensely musically competent and appealing. But if you're not nearly musically competent, hardworking or focused. Would anyone give a rats ass about your band's existence.

*take note, I'm not dissing anyone's band, I'm addressing a mentality*

I'm not saying you have to go for every single gig humanly possible, cause the gigs you go to, have to provide your taste in music of course, unless you want to. But anyways, its important for you to pay and check out bands in Singapore for you to make a conclusive deduction about the bands. Instead of perpetually dismissing their music or anything locally produced as shit and boring.

Blah blah blah, the scene needs this. The scene needs that. The scene needs more support!
Put your money where your bleeping mouth is.

Not forgetting, to all the shameless sexually deprived horn dogs out there who rather perversely ogle at a female musician's accest than deliver credit to their talent/practice with music. I really despise you. Could you guys be more respectful? A female musician is not a gimmick and deserves the equal amount of treatment as a male musician. If condemned about anything, it should only be with relevance to their music competence. And not SOLELY on their aesthetics.

And OH! one more thing. i bleeping resent the term local music! Stop calling it that! True, its music made from Singapore but by labeling it local music you re pigeon-holing mentalities towards it. It becomes an obvious stereo type. IF a band produced good music, i think its completely unjust to demeans their value just because they're locally produced. Someone i know propose the term, original music. I think its not bad.

*my apologies to james, but i'm just really upset now.*

hahah, true that. can't force people to watch something that they don't? well maybe can lah, but that's another story.... the sad thing is that even if ppl go for gigs, they just watch their friend's band then just leave the venue without checking the rest out. So should the band with the most no of frenly frens plead their groupies to stay on?

I absolutely concur with sis pinkbox sis' comments, except the spelling mistake and the self-censoring profanities.

Hurhurhur...

in the face of the solo feminist movement, i must stand up for MCPs

skilled male musician < skilled female musician with 'assets'

anyway it is sad but that's life lah. in the open market, i will part with my hard earned yusof ishaks for what is, in my mind, the best. i won't avoid a gig just because it's local. i don't care if it is local or foreign. i only care if it is good.

and if i were to play a gig and sell boxer shorts with my face on the crotch, i would expect people to have that mentality; pay for what they think is good, and name their sons and daughters after my drummer. and i would set high standards for myself and expect people to dig it. if nobody comes to my gig then i am not good enough. because i don't owe the 'scene' anything other than my best effort, and playing good music

there's a lot we can do as consumers (audiences), facilitators (organizers) and producers (musicians/bands) to support original music in singapore.

i'm not involved in organizing gigs because i have neither the time nor inclination. however, as a consumer and a musician in a band, i:

- attend gigs of bands that play local music that i like when i'm free to do so, regardless of whether it's free or ticketed;
- work and practice my ass off with my own band so that we're able to put on shows and write songs that are worth your time; and
- buy merch and albums of local bands that i like, like AVA, Caracal, The Full Pledge Monkeys, etc

on this note, please buy LIME magazine this month. 30 local bands in there for $3. seriously. even if you're a cheapo you should be able to afford this, if only out of curiosity to see if there's any music from local bands that you might like.

hmm yea true. most of the good bands are still not yet known.
if it's local, i'd go for free ones. i haven't yet found a band that, to me, is worth paying for OR the bands that i support haven't organised a gig.

pretty much both
Well, most DIY organisers usually have very little funds with them. And if they organise gigs for free, who's gonna pay for the rent? Most of the money goes out to rental of venue and equipment anyway. That's why it's paid. I would really love to organise free shows though. Don't have to worry about ticket sales.

If you talk about getting sponsors, I think the big names find it easier to get them.. DIY shows hardly get any. Sponsors technically look for opportunity to expand their business and get seen by a lot of people. The DIY gigs must have some substantial value for it to get sponsors I guess.

It's really hard organising gigs though. Organisers put their heart and soul to it just to make it right. Even though sometimes thigns go wrong and we get all criticised. Hey, nobody's perfect..
