Talent Vs Hardwork in Guitar Playing?

Not everyone is cut out to be proficient at the skills they seek to master.

Just ensure your reasons for playing guitar can sustain you through the journey.

Yeah i've had my struggles and i would like to go back learning under a teacher rather than sheer self teaach or tabs...

Some advice for you:

Write down what stuff you have problems.
Write down how you can solve them on your own.
Write down how long you think you can solve your problems.

Whatever you think you can't do, bring the list to your future teacher to see.

hehe, confusion is sex...next i mean!

hey frodonet, do try out what thor666 mentioned, it can be useful as well

take it easy man, the journey of playing guitar, making music, listening to music are gift to us as well as problem to us. Each activity along the way will be presented to us either in a nicely wrapped package, with wide open arms or full of question mark, potholes which we easily fall inside and not able to climb out

sometime, the more we let go, the more we will achieve and at the same time, the more we stop focusing on something, we will hear more. Answer will come to you when you dont give up,, but knowing when to give up, answer will also come to you..

balance is of great importance(guitar playing, practice, teacher's teaching, listening activity of music other then those one is usually into, living life, eating sleep man women etc etc), as well as thinking simple in looking deep deep into a deep hole.

have fun

hehe, if the above doesnt make much sense, just laugh over it. Some of the words came about from what i have encounter as a self learning geetar player and sorta gotten answers thru the above action. It might not work for everyone, but just thot i write those..

aniwae .. juz for info

1st 3 months practice fingering like SH*T 6 hours a day hearing the same tune cuz i cant tune for goodness sake for the first 3 months .

the next month practice 1st song " the trooper " iron maiden it takes me 2 more months to really master it on my own + i learn to tune also even though its still not in the key of EADGBE .

following months practice all the riff and stuff from other mr big stuff , gnr , iron maiden, others not even knowing the theory behind every notes they make .

till the 3rd year guess wad ... for goodness sake i dun know even a single chord . took me 2 weeks to get used to the chords . and 2 more weeks for bar chords such as F and stuff

and at 3 1/2 year i dun even know how to do continuous strum properly ... i can only shred and still not propper enuff.. as in damn messy

5th year the first theory i get ... about scales and modes that is when my mind really open up and can start doing musical solo and stuff ...

but still if i compared to the masters here ... im still a tiny piece of dust man ... still need to REALLY2 study and learn well ...

juz for info i cant compose a song starting from major chord ... cuz it will turn out to be a punk song ... and my solo will suck so bad even my dog will hang itself ...

so the conclusion is ... juz dun think of backing out bro ... even me 5 years of playing still need to strive ... still got ALOOT of thinks to know

and for goodness sake i cant read tabs ...

hi there,

thats' why i stopped playing electric already. Now usually playing acoustic and lot of songs from books. i kind of regretted stopping my lessons with my previous teacher.

i wish i can continue again...but still i never had given up on my guitar cause it's the only thing in the world that i have. i hope i can master it one day...

now go see classical guitar videos in youtube on how to play classical...start from scratch again...hehe, thanks for the advice, am not being emo.

admire your determination, with the road you are heading, i think you'll be a fantastic musician one day. Kudos to you!

Thanks for the advice,

for me, i'm done with learning chords. i know to play major barre chords and power chords and some scales.

but now my second step is learning classical..the first was chords...

still viewing videos in youtube..got a lot of lessons on basic classical playing.

i will never back out! don't you worry man!

rock 'n' roll is in my blood!

My version:

Technique: Hardwork
Melody: Talent

Without talent, hardwork can be wasted. Without hardwork, talent will be wasted. You need both.

I think it is also important to define talent. To some, talent means being able to play the guitar, play covers. To others talent means being able to come up with original stuff.

There are lots of technically proficient guitarists that suck at playing originals. I would rather equate talent to having the ability to create original stuff. Almost anyone, without talent, can be taught to play a wide variety of songs.

But you can't teach someone to be original, to create compelling stuff that is original. That to me is talent.

My take is that talent is a requirement, 100%. And hardwork (discipline), perseverance (to push on when things aren't working out), intelligence (to be able to solve issues and to be able to look at things creatively in a constructive manner) and of course some luck to go along with it all - these are also required 100%.

And talent doesn't occur a few years after you start playing the guitar. If you truly have talent, it'll appear in the first few months, even the first month, once you've built up sufficient finger strength and dexterity to express yourself. This explains why musical prodigies are quite prevalent.

Cheers
RoRK

first you gotta have the passion my friend than passion will tell you hardwork is the only way.after that things will start to pay off.i dont really believe in talent.its just a matter of experience.people misinteprete talent and experience.

Wah. You guys "play" guitar for what, or rather whom? It sounds as if there is a certain motive behind everyone's "race for excellence", through either hard work or talent or both.

I for one, play the guitar for my own satisfaction, pain and pleasure. Explains why I never get anywhere by not participating in this race, but I can't give a rat's arse about it.

Wahaha... didn't you know? Most guitarist play to sound like another guitarist!!!! Down to the little metal boxes they step on! :P

Let me put in my two cents worth.

I think firstly if you can even play anything on the gutiar, even a SINGLE note without fret buzz and nice tone then you have the ability to play the guitar well. Too many ppl i have seen just are not able to do that. Blame the gutiar, blame their fingers, blame everything except themselves. I dont really truly believe that it is all talent that makes up the best guitarists. I think its more hardwork than anything. It quite obvious that even if you have the biggest talent, not working hard wont get you anywhere.

Of course there are some crazily imba ppl out there who can listen to a song once and just play it out for you almost at once. I think its more of musical ability than anything else. Given time, any guitarist or musician for that matter should be able to do that or something around that level. haha.

I started playing the guitar only last year. The road for me was really tough. At the start I just could not get rid of fret buzz nor can i barre properly. After 1-2 months things took a turn, considering i practice around 6 hours daily then. My first song believe it or not is "classical gas". I took around 3 months to learn and play it well. Looking back I am not quite sure how i managed. I think its hard now. It only goes to show hardwork does pay off. practice hard, your efforts will be rewarded. As a tip, play songs you like and not what ppl recommend, i think that will really help in improving.

I believe and find that the harder I work, the more talented people think I am. Whether as a musician, songwriter, anything.

Food for thought. Some artist, I think it's Leonardo da Vinci but I'm not sure, said "if people knew how much time and effort I put into doing what I do, they probably wouldn't think I'm such a genius."

The greatest musicians practice for hours and hours a day. The greatest athletes never stop training. Nobody was born with a guitar.
