Swing Prism vs. Edwards LP

Help! I can't decide! I'm planning on either getting a Swing Prism (http://www.standardvalue.com.sg/store/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=228) or a Edwards LP. They both cost about the same thing (1300 SGD). I've always wanted a LP (I have an Ibanez super-strat and a Yamaha acoustic) and Edwards make really nice, MIJ, good quality LPs for a decent price. On the other hand, the Swing Prism is a really cool strat. S-S-H (Seymour Duncans), piezo pickup, stereo/mono (mixing acoustic and electric sounds), nubone bridge, etc...

Advice?

Oh and I'm moving back to Japan next year. Maybe I could get the Swing Prism this year and buy the Edwards before I leave Japan and come back to spore for NS...

What a valid dilemma!

Firstly, upon Mike's recommendations, I've tried out the Swing range. They are very value for money, considering the above average quality and the considerably low asking price.

I remember that day when I was hanging out at Standard Value. And I saw this Swing guitar with 1k plus price tag. I thought he had the wrong price tag, since I've always viewed Swing as a cheaper alternative.

So Mike took the guitar down for me to try and also related the specifications. American alder body, Canadian hard maple neck, Indian rosewood fingerboard, Sperzels, LR Baggs, SD pups, and according to Mike to pots and switch are the better kind, he mentioned the brand but I can't remember it for nuts. Seriously, every damned thing on the Prism is really really good-quality, high-end stuff.

And it plays very well too, but I assume it's because Mike has set-it up beforehand. Frets are nicely dressed, low-action with not the slightest buzz anywhere, paint job is faultless, no glue residue visible anywhere, pots are smooth, volume and tone tapers are very even, according to my average ears. Resonates very well, can really feel it against your body, acoustically sound, nice weight balance too, you can't find a fault with it. Except the one fatal thing that might pose a problem to some. The decal on the headstock says 'Swing'.

So seriously, if you don't mind that. Then I say it's a very very good buy. If it says freaking 'Fender' on the headstock, a guitar with these specifications will cost a hell lot more. Maybe even double to three times the 1k plus asking price of the Swing.

Then again, the Edwards LPs are nice stuff too. But if you want to compare then spec for spec, the Prism wins hands down. But Edwards is a more established brand, so to speak.

But, you're comparing an LP with a Strat, they're on different planes. At the end of the day, I guess you've to first decide what you really want more. But both candidates for a Strat and LP copy are very good ones, so either way you're not losing out.

Hope this helps!

I'm starting to lean towards the get both plan I mentioned... I kind of want to save some money though.

I'll probably find a better price in Japan than Davis (although Davis actually sells this guitar for less than Ishibashi!). And maybe I'll buy a Marlique during my NS years!

The two guitars you shortlisted are both good guitars. But, one is a LP copy, the other is a strat. So you have to decide which type you like :).

It all boils down to what you want man..

The Swing is one hell of a versatile beast, with the mixing of your piezo + SD pups through a simple knob.. Really love that feature!

Edwards make one hell of a great LP, superb construction, great tone!

Yeah. I guess it is basically a LP vs. Strat kind of question. At first I planned on getting the Edwards and started saving up for it but then I discovered the Swing at SD and it was a really cool guitar.

I really can't decide so I guess I'm just going to have to get both. :)

arent you going back to japan?
the strats there would be a good alternative to the swing, and of course, edwards are MIJ

Threadstarter: Just curious, what is your guitar currently?

Maybe what you have can help determine what you need.

It's a Cort X-6 (basically your typical Ibanez...)

Basswood, 24 frets, H-S-H, floyd rose...

I like LPs more than strats. I actually don't really want a strat but I want the Swing because it's so versatile (piezo-overdriven electric mix=amaaazing).

Hmm.. I think getting either guitar will offer you a quite a different intonation from the current guitar you have.

But I would personally get the LP first. Your liking for the Swing is purely a phase of GAS, I think. Not to say that you should completely ignore it. If you can afford both, why not? But I'd say get the LP first. I have a feeling you will regret if you don't :)

+1. If you get the Swing, but you prefer LPs, you're going to appreciate and like the extra features the Swing has, but you're not going to enjoy playing it because it just doesn't feel comfortable. Go for what suits you.
