Strat questions

I have a few questions regarding the strat. Kindly pardon my ignorance!

1) Are there any significant tonal differences between an Ash-bodied strat and an Alder-bodied strat?
2) Do single coils take to effects well? Bearing in mind the fact that they have a huge inclination towards noise/hum.
3) Are there any disadvantages on getting a maple-neck strat apart from cosmetics/aesthetics? Seeing as to how rosewood necks seem to be often favoured to the former.

1) depends on the quality of the wood.

2) i think the amp is a bigger factor here. Get noiseless singlecoils to be safe.

3)rosewood necks are generally warmer den maple. Rosewood fretboards oso need more maintanence den maple boards. Only disadvantage i can think of is that it mite be too bright for you and that its a 1 piece neck which means its less strong compared to those ibanez laminate style necks.

Questions 1) and 3) have been comprehensively discussed in a couple threads. Please do a search.

About question 2, single coils have been leading the tonal revolution for years now, yes it takes effects very well. As long as you dont go over the top with gain, and use modulation wisely, and stay away from electric transformers and the like when playing, hum shouldnt be too much of a problem.

However, in gigs in inevitable to avoid some sort of a hum or the other due to the presence of so many other electrical items - so it maybe wise to invest in a hum canceller. Hope this helps

single coils have been tried tested and proven and liked by many....thats the reason why a Fender Stratocaster will always stay in that current configuration and still be sought after by many..

Well i guess its knowing what you want? for me i like strats but my band plays heavy rock and alternative metal so i guess i'll be getting high-output single-coil hotrails on the neck and bridge for my strat. But then again i might not as i already use my ibanez s470 as my main axe for my band. Personal preferences.

for me i think strats should stick to single coils, cos well they are meant to be that way. =) dont worry too much about effects as they are supposed to be building blocks to your sound, you gotta like the basic tone from your axe first

i think you are referring to a rosewood fretboard instead...

guitars' components do indeed contribute to its unique tonal/ playability blueprint but the human variable in us makes these consideration subjective (some of us can't hear the diff between an ash body's crisp acoustics compared to its alder counterpart). we can go on & on with specs talk but the personal encounter (trying the guitar out yourself) would, at the end of it all, determine the make/ creak of a certain embrace. what others propose may/ may not be your compliance.

i'm not proposing that you disregard the finer details shared within these pages but do factor in subjectivity into the discussions.

exactly! i was kinda confused when he said "rosewood necks"

its personal preference/your own "feel" on wherther a maple fretboard or a rosewood one suits/sounds somehow nicer to you. Theres no need to worry about cosmetics cause they both look great and if u choose to stick with cosmetic wise, u may end up playing a fingerborad u feel isn't comfortable to u eventually.

george harrison was famous for using an all rosewood tele, yes body, neck, fretboard all rosewood.

it was custom made for him...then fender released something like 500 copies for sale back then in late 60s.

fender also presented hendrix with an all rosewood prototype strat at the same time with harrison...

aint too way back. Singer from electrico also seen using the reissue rosewood tele on many occasions and with pictures taken from last year and this year.

tremolo as vibrato, blame it on the angmo lao chiaos back in the 50s calling vibrato unit as tremolo instead. They, are the noobs, the rest of us, are just trying to act smart, knowing the different on something which came about even before our folks screwed each other and gave birth to us...
