stock pickups and "branded pickups"

hi i was wondering if there is any tonal or output different between lets say stock pickups frm a cheap squire strat or tgm strat as compared to those equipped with dimarzio or seymour duncan pickups...

Theres a difference definitely, but its up to each individual`s taste..I`m keeping my stock pickups in my Squier Strat Standard for now..

Squier Standard Strats have decent pickups, good enough for normal playing, but putting a Dimarzio Blue Velvet in the bridge really made it sings IMO. =)

Hey Marksman, I wouldnt mind swapping my stockies for dimarzios, laces or duncans..if I have the $$$...: p Now broke hahaha..

I`m actually looking for more of a vintage tone like those strats of the 50s/60s..which ones do u think I should get? I like to play those Shadows/Ventures type of music on my Strat, while I`ll get a future guitar later on for playing bluesy, hard-rock : P

Seymour Duncan California ‘50s™ Set – "is a matched and calibrated set of SSL-1 Vintage Staggered pickups for Stratocaster® guitars. The pickups are authentic ‘50s reproduction Alnico 5 vintage single coils, and work great for surf, Country, blues and classic rock." - SD webpage

Not sure if you will like the low output though. They're relatively cheaper than the boutique stuff as a set iirc.

imo Laces just don't sound authentic - but they do sound good in their own way. Dimarzios usually are more expensive in SG unless you can find a place where they sell it cheap.

damn...i have a Tgm guitar...plan to change the crappy pickpups to dimarzio and seymour duncan...worth the change guys?

faizal:

Wait for Sweelee sale then we go buy pickups lo haha! I'm getting my RG a couple of humbuckers.

50s or 60s...

I cant say for sure...

If you wouldn't mind the 50 cycle hum, you might want to go for Blue Velvets (Neck model for neck and mid or just neck if you don't need the mid pup, Bridge Model for bridge). Maybe some other day I can come over to your place and let you hear the BV Bridge model for yourself? =)

You can also try Class of 55 on the neck yea.

If you want something hum cancelling, try virtual vintage pickups/area 54/61. According to reviews on the 'net. It sounds extremely close to the true-strat kind of sound, and it takes freaking lot of experience to tell the difference from the true-strat sound.

You can also try Cruisers.

Visit www.dimarzio.com for more info. =)

Hope that helps.

Could be worth a try, im not too sure...

Thorman666/Marksman: Hey guys, thanks for the advice. I`ll think over about what u said n see which models suits me the best..: P

HELL NO! haha! dont waste ur money on a lousy guitar! get a better guitar, then ur pickups wont be that bad, and if u upgrade pickups, it will sound better.

I used to have a TGM strat classic series n installed a Seymour Duncan alnico pro at the bridge and it really sounded good! Serious..but I sold it off cos I wanted something heavy n distorted sounding, which is why I went for other guitars..but as of late, I suddenly fell in love again with the Strat sound a few months back and thus, I have my trusty Squier Strat..: P

can anyone recommend me a set of pickups for my squier california telecaster? i want a good clean tone as well as a tone which can be "cutting". i know very little about after market pickups so help is greatly appreciated

I know little about teles but here goes:

Do you mind whether it's humbucking or not? Or whether it sounds more like a humbucker or a tele pickup? And if possible, try to be more detailed in your idea of pickups.... Maybe seperate description for each pickup if possible (bridge and neck).

mines the standard tele configuration, i've no idea how to put this across but i would like my tele to sound good when clean but can also "scream"

jumpman:scream n cutting, eh? Then maybe u can try putting in a single coil size humbucker at the bridge n add coil split to split the humbucker into single coil..tat way, u`ll have more versatility in tones..I added a Duncan little `59 to the bridge of my old aria tele and added coil split...anyway tat was years ago, n its no longer with me now but I`d love to pick up a tele one day..: )

If screaming = hot and heavy output...

You cant' get sweet cleans then. Lower output gives you nicer cleans and higher output gives you more oomph but cleans start getting bland.

Of course that depends on what your take on sweet cleans is but...
yeap.

I would think it makes so much more sense to work on drive pedals or amps to achieve that kind of screaming, cutting tone. Too much gain available nowadays.
