Splutter Monster - Torn speaker effect (pics and clips)

I just finished an effect pedal that simulates an amplifier with a torn speaker. This is unlike any fuzz, overdrive or distortion. Lots of spluttering and farting. I bet if you use this at gigs the soundman will be wondering what the hell happened to his amp.

Here's what it looks like (it's the one on the left):

And here's the soundclip:

I set it up so the volume and tone remains the same when the effect is ON, because this pedal can boost the volume a freakin lot.

Here's a rundown of the clip:
0.00 Clean
0.10 Splutter Monster with a light touch
0.18 With a heavier touch
0.28 Going all out
1.05 Overdrive only
1.15 Overdrive into Splutter Monster with a light touch
1.22 Going all out again with the overdrive this time
2.20 Distortion alone
2.44 Distortion into the Splutter Monster

haha cool one.. but i kinda figuring what kinda song would need a torn speaker sound.. hmm cool stuff.. a booster perhaps?

Interesting INDEED. Its very unique, I must say, it sounds great with distortion.

Show this to Randolf. He'll be interested. :)

The distortion into splutter sounds nice for those power huge sounding rhythm playin but the splutter or "farting" at the background is kinda irritating, maybe can think of havin another swithch or something to cut that out?

By the way how about postin some samples tat only has single note playin (ie solos)? cos wanna know how it sounds if use it for solos?

Heh thanks. I'll pm him or something and see what he has to say.

It's like fireworks! XD How do you even do it anyway?
As in, how it works? Hmm to put it simply it has a misbiased transistor. Usually you have to bias your transistors properly to allow proper flow. But if you have a misbiased one, you get a gated effect. Sometimes this will cause your volume to totally disappear at low volumes and suddenly appear when you whack the strings. Some transistors work, some don't. Also, in this build, the transistor is placed in a very unorthadox way.[/url]

The whole point was to create the splutter, so if you just switch the effect off, it will be gone. If you go poke some holes in your speaker (heaven forbid), you will find it to sound quite similar. When you play at high volumes your speaker will start to splutter, and when the volume dies down, you start to hear a normal signal.

Hmm good idea about the single note thing, I was too excited with all the spluttery chords I forgot about that. I'll do it another day.

Thanks everyone for your comments :D

1 advice for you.

Goop your designs.

There's a boat load of custom efx makers out there and ppl are handy with solders. :)

kudos to the maker of this. I believe it's going to be a niche market for this locally..

as for gooping the circuit, imho, there's really not much point. There are already quite a number of torn speaker effect ala various effector 13, zvex fuzzfactory, midfi electronic, metasonic etc. It's not really something that's
new in the noise effect market.

imho

Actually I haven't thought about making these for sale at all. It was just a sound i've been hearing in my head and wanting to put into a pedal. I don't think it's a highly sought after sound.

I've heard the fuzz factory and I don't think it sounds anything like for it.
I believe the Effector13 Torn's Peaker and some metalsonic pedals sound similar from their soundclips but they cost a lot and I don't know anybody who has one so no chance to try.

Making effect pedals by hand one by one is hard work and probably makes them priced 2-3 times more than factory made ones. If I put this for sale, for example, I think I will charge about $150 - $200. You can probably get an Effector13 pedal for that price haha.

Signal routing pedals like A/B boxes and the like are 10 times easier which is why I do not mind making these at fairly low prices.

broken sound not really a big thing here most probably, must target those noise musicians, make music/sound to blow speaker and hearing

i heard a fuzzfactory before with the gate and comp knob turn up to 3/4, it does has that constipated sort of sound with i thought sound like a torn speaker, or something like pulling velcro apart kind of tone.

"Waves Hand" :)

My my! This sounds like greatb fun!

Having been exploring (still am) as many options possible with stomp based overdrive and distortion circuits, I've come to conclude (at the moment) that everything out there is based on subtle or radical variations of the classic circuits. There's no such thing as a single ultimate drive pedal for everyone as what sounds great for one always turns out different (better or worse) to another.

But the FUZZ based pedal!!!

This is a whole different world altogether! I think shredcow understands what I mean when I described Fuzz pedals having that "WTF" kinda character which can range anywhere from "Woah!" to "Ewwwww!"

Torn Speakers and farting tones are just another buncho sonic colours for the aspiring guitarist in search of new shades...

Looking forward to meeting you and giving your pedal a test run sometime soon. See you at Barnone on the 27th Feb. I'll be performing with my band "the embryo"

Cheers!

:D

Heh cool.

I'm currently working on an extreme DS-1 mod. Once I get that done and working then we arrange sometime to meet. I'm very interested to try out your different variations of distortion and overdrive too :)

Hehe. I understand dude. Very very complex, this fuzz thing.

In fact.

I bought malcom's HellyBilly fuzz. :)

the sound clip sounds a bit sonic-youthy to me (which is a good thing, of course)

cant imagine using this very often, but i think its that kinda effect that will make your audience go "what was that?!"

(or they just might think your speaker really went kaput... heh)

hey nice pedal but maybe there would be a theblueark distortion or something easier to use?

Nah pointless. There are already so many great distortion pedals out there at affordable prices due to factory production. I'd rather buy then make one. The only reason I made this was because I couldn't find anything like it.

Well.
Nothing beats a well put together, top quality component dirt box.

Boss uses cheap stuff. Their pedals can be improved with better components all the time.

I hate to say this, but I think I am moving onto booteek stuff... haha... oh man... booteek stuff just kill the normal Boss pedals....

LOL  !!

No offense blueark.. but seriously it does really sounds like a fart...

Maybe can use it at some eerie them,ed song.. and make it sounds like those sci-fic twilight zone stuff...

You seem handy in electronics. But why the farty sound? Sounds like some dry joints in the loop. Certainly unpleasant unless you want it for an effect.
