Singapore Drum Festival 2007

Just came back from Suntec..

All in all, its a BLAST!!

For those who went, congrats for being a winner even if U've never won anything.. Damn! dat 3rd prize is better than the grand prize for the lucky draw..

I'm stuck onto Nate Morton's Cd... He's good!!

Awesome 2 days it was!

My personal fav performances were Gregg Bissonette, Derek Roddy, Nate Morton, Tony Royster Jr and Gorden Campbell. The impromptu Tony Royster and Jojo Mayer jam was incredible!

Gorden Campbell is a monster! He is THE groove master man. His hiphop/R&B grooves were breath taking. His tone was uuummmpphh! Derek Roddy and Nate Morton were ultra friendly and humble. I was pleasantly surprised by how warm a person Derek Roddy was :D

All the drummers and percussionists who performed were truly inspirational. Kudos to all the people who made this Drum Fest possible :D

PS shred5: Yeah I love Nate Morton's album too. Kickass!

siak je massageparlour eh...!@! haha

eh i didn't stick through the lucky draw... what's the prizes and what u won ah shred??? hehe

well day 1 and day 2 was equally blastfull!! i managed to get to autographs on my zildjian shirt and my posters... derek roddy was the most humble of all i guess...

the DRUMSHED with jimmy, campbell and tony was insane... i thought it was suppose to be a drum triplet but it ended up being a drumshed... woo..

jojo was sensational though he missed some ques and stuff.. Jimmy stand out great too...

had a blast, will go again if it's held nxt year or the year after...

peace y'all

Ps: i got to meet my drum hero: JOJO MAYER!! wooo sadly NAKAMURA didn't stayed on the autograph session..

Wow, this Drumfest totally kicked ass. Though I only managed to catch the 2nd day of the festival, I've totally no regrets.

All in all the drummers were awesome, especially Nate and Gorden. They both created the greatest impact for me.

Btw, shred5 and mel80, what's the name of the band of Nate's Cd ? I have to now buy the Cd online due to the overwhelming response of his shameless self promotion... lol.

I bought tix to both days but only made it for yesterday. Damn. But it's funny, I'm a bassist and I really found it interesting enough to actually go down and stay till Jojo finished his performance! Great stuff. I also wondered whether other musicians would pay and turn up for a bass day though :) Personally, I thought that a drum fest would be most viable compared to a bass/guitar one. But thats just me.

ya lo.. same here... !!

my fav performances would be..

1) Jojo mayer's solo and performance with NERVE

2) Gordon campbell RNB GROOVES!! and Gospel chops/music.

3) Jojo and tony impromtu jam

4) Tony, gordon and jimmy's DRUMSHED!! (AWESOME)

5) steve thorton and Mat noor shed first part.

6) Gregg bissionette!!! (AWESOME)

Last but not least, DEREK RODDY!!

All of the performances we're jammed packed with awesomeness and i'd like to thank those who made my trip down and the whole event possible:D..

thanks guys

it is really a pity for those who missed it..it was that good!
thumbs up for the organiser!
Drumfest 2008

massive kudos to the drumfest committee for the absolutely mind-blowing 2nd day despite greb's no-show. the first day suffered little hiccups here and there (too loud, faulty projector, etc) but the 2nd day was just absolutely freakin hilariously awesome.

i went home all smiles. this really made my day. it actually gave me hope for the music scene here in singapore. thanks once again!

good thing i bought my ear plugs when jojo mayer and nerve played...

THE BASSIST WAS FREAKISHLY LOUD!! many complained the BEEEEEEP sound on the ear aft the performance.. buahahah.. not me:D

dissonance:
Nate Morton's CD is titled Playground Philosophy. He used his nickname 'Dootybug' in the CD

You can check also out http://www.natemorton.com/

Hope this helps.

Good thing I rushed out to grab the CD immediately after Nate finished playing

DRUMFEST 2008! HERE I COME!(or here WE come) :D

Day2:
Day 2 was awesome too. Although the 2nd day drummers are superbly incredible, I still prefer the 1st Day, Grant Collins, Grant Collins and Nate Morton

Nate Morton: Bloody hard hitter, while I was sitting in the Cat 2 seat, I can still hear his "real" drumming overshadowing the drum sounds from the speakers.
Gordon Campbell looks nervous, not much talking, he plays open handed, but wicked of beat hi hats.
Jimmy, yeah I like the way he kicks his left foot up after a certain rolls. nice
Tony R JR. I like the jam session with his odd signature tracks. (What to do I'm an odd man :D )
Both Drum duels: Tony & Jojo, Tony & Jimmy & Gorden: 8O

But the most I like was meeting some of u SOFTIES guys and some nice chicks. Thumbs up, if can get lost from my work early on 23rd, I'll join u guys.

Of course after this DRUMFEST 2007 don't forget to practice. The DRUMFEST has somewhat put a bit of fuel in our burning desire for drumming. It's up to us to keep the fire up, on and on and on until another DRUMFEST (If there would be another one). Don't let the stuffs u bought at the drumfest collect dust.

Overall: Good sound system. Good lighting. Moderate crowd. Timing was a little bit too long though. Damn superb drummers. Magnificent event. A little bit Expensive foods: 5 out of 5 stars.

Cheers

PS: So Funkifized, it''s good to see you're satisfied with the event.

What can I say really, its been like 3 months since I posted.. and when I posted some quite a number of people have doubts about whether the event will take place, even me as well... haha... NICE!! I'm just very excited and it really happened!! WEEEE favorite will be Jojo ,Tony's impromptu jam.. thumbs up for Boon and team for making such a 'world-class' event... cant wait for 2008!!!

Its been awesome guys. My favs were the impromtu jam with Jojo and Tony and Tony's version of Chick Corea's Spain, and Gorden's over the top but not so over the top gospel drumming. This was a awesome festival. Kudos to the Organizers for getting in some really F%^king Fantastic woorld class acts. And i felt that Jimmy held his own too.

i guess i am 1 lucky dude.

well, actually i play the guitar and really know nuts about drums. in fact, i know not even 1 of the names of ALL the drummers.

anyway, my friend needed help with filming the masterclasses and tala, i was down for 2 full days. memorable experiences include...

1. watching tony royster jr warm up for 1 solid hour.
heard abit about him in day 1, (what he can do double bass with 1 leg, he is a drumming genuis...) but totally didnt realise the dude playing right in front of me is him. he was just doing his chops, and i was thinking to myself... hmm... this guy is too stiff man. BUT, hell, when he is on stage, his aggressive strokes are amazing. gorden executes very aggressive strokes as well. i think that was where jimmy lost out during the drumshred. his strength is nothing compared to the tony and gorden.

2. filming gorden campells' masterclass
he is one humble dude man. i was at derek roddy's masterclass for the first day. both of them are extremely humble. gorden really emphasized on keeping the groove and playing the role of a drummer. while derek talked more about how to train correctly.

3. derek roddy filming jojo mayer
yes. derek roddy brought his own DV camera to film the jojo act.

4. jojo's techniques are mind blowing
as a guitarist, i find whatever he taught on stage extremely interesting. while people are going crazy trying to do those fast rolls, jojo is going, "hit, bounce bounce, hit, bounce bounce." that was fucking cool.

5. backstage stuff
not to mention having the chance to take pictures with all the drummers at backstage. actually i wasnt really keen to take pictures since i didnt know them at all. but during second day, i thought they were really awesome and i took shots with tony, mohamad, jimmy, grant collins... they were all VERY VERY nice. amazing, now i really regret not getting all their signatures on a drum skin or something.

cheers to boon. hope drumfest 2008 would be back soon. and that i would have another backstage pass.

Yo Bros

Yes indeed, the Event was simply Spectacular, the Largest ever Drumming Event we ever had here...Do you all not agree?....This also means alot of $$$$$, time, effort must have been invested upfront to make all these a success. Here, we really have to say..Thank You Tan Boon, US Studio, your crew and all those that had made this happens.

As this is not only Boon's Event...It's OURS's EVENT too (each and every drummer here) - Here I think each and everyone of us can try to play our little role/part in making DrumFest 2008 become a reality next up comming year again too...be it in smaller ways or be it in some bigger ways - It's involvement & some commitment .....I strongly believe everyone who had attended this DrumFest would love having another wonderful drumming experience like these.

Truly it was tough on Tan Boon to bring an event on this scale with no Sponsors at all (just supporters), I will likewise try helping Tan Boon get Sponsors for the DrumFest 2008 (at least I will try my best) and I hope you wonderful Brothers here could also help on this area on your own personal accord (volunteering to help in the next one etc)- it's not compulsory anyway just from the heart (It's the thought that counts). Talking about Supporters - A Big Thank You to all these supporters for the DrumFest 2007....We know who you all are too. Thank You !

Owner Of DrummerWorld (Bernhard) knew about the many obsticles organising a DrumFest like this one - and it's been really hard on Tan Boon and as such gave his utmost support too in putting this Event for us at DrummerWorld.com (The World No.1 Forum). Tan Boon will do a detail Review (with pics video) and all these will be put up at DrummerWorld....Thanks to Bernhard for his kindest support and understanding too.

Let's give Tan Boon his deserved credit & value contribution to the Drumming Community at large here - great job Tan Boon.....you won our hearts man....Cheers !

PS:- Hey guys...there is a Drum Clinic (2 days) in August right? - Thomas Lang Clinic.....heard it's about Creative Control & Creative coordination Boon can you give us the details here - so we can post it up.....Wow.wwwww Thomas Lang - How can miss lah Bro
