Singapore Drum Festival 2007

Wah i very sad now... Benny Greb was a big reason why i bought the tickets to... one of me favourite players.I was hoping maybe they sell his album at the drumfest too cuz i cant find it anywhere in SG....What happens to those with Benny Greb masterclass tickets? Rodney Holmes Aaron Spears Luis Conte Benny Greb all withdraw...all gone

I really didn't cared much for the other drummers you know... Greb has amazing soloing capabilities and Mayer has incredible hands and drum&bass grooves. Aries Spears is incredible in the gospel chops thing and Tony Royster is musical and tight.

Derek Roddy plays fast but i'm totally not interested in death metal and could care less about blasting 250bpm noisebeats. Grant Collins does that independence soloing that has been done to death by Terry Bozzio and i can't see the point of playing THAT melodically on a drumkit (to the point of having such a huge kit). Jimmy Lee i can see any other time in Singapore...

Now I'm stuck with the option to replace my benny greb workshop to any of the 3 above dudes. crap man. there's gordon campbell too but if i'm seeing tony royster i don't think i should see another gospel chops dude.

Hopefully they can get another great drummer to repalce Greb. At most can try to call in drummers from countries situated nearer to Singapore like Akira Jimbo, Virgil Donati or Carter Beauford. less than 2 days to the drumfest , takes nearly a day to fly in from America and half a day to fly in from Europe. Maybe Greb wont even be replaced.

how abt....coming over to esplanade at 11 for greg bissonette's clinic then? $20...tix at The Music Lab...There's no profit for us and we're helping to promote Greg simply becos he is one amazing player. And I know for a fact that tix are sold at a lost....so we should support the organiser as much as we could if we wanna see this happen again in the future...

Aiyah,
Give the organisera a chance. Being an organisers is not fun and too much of a headache headache. I am an event planner/organiser too.

We need to book the location. Then must find place where can alight / park / heed to dos and donts of event location.
Then need to liase with accomodations, Equipments.
What the VIPs wants/needs.
Need to take care of the welfare of the employee/workers/techicians.
Some ticketing agencies sometimes makes error of printing out duplicate seats ect.
All planned sui-sui for 3 months, for an 8 hour event then last minute sure got something cock-up.
VIP come late/cannot come la. Security guard at event location can't allow this thing/that thing to be brought in.
Pyros got stuck with the police cause of liscencing problem.
This room / That room cannot be used la.

Whatever it is let's give it up for the Organisers dude. They bust their butt to bring in quite a high calibres group of drummers to play in Singapore.
If not the nearest we can go is Australia, to watch these similar event.

Thumbs up SingaporeDrumFest.

I knew someone was going to say this. Yes of course planning an event is no joke, was involved in one and i hated it. But the thing is we're PAYING for this, esp for those who paid for cat 1 tickets, they're paying a LOT.

If they advertise that a certain drummer is going and then last minute pull out, that's ALMOST like false advertising. Essentially they failed to deliver everything that they promised. Who wouldn't be pissed? If we don't give our criticisms then the quality of the drumfest will never improve. This may be a last minute cockup but i'm sure there could've been a contingency plan.

I appreciate the effort. But appreciation and satisfaction are two different things.

yeap.. true to what funkfized said..

anyways, how come benny's name is still up??? i saw that they've updated the countdown to when the drumfest is starting.... :?

well, I am very sad too.. but I think Benny is really very sick.. I'm all time Benny's favorite.. I even bought his CD which is not in sold in Singapore and plans to buy his signatured trash hats that he just released not long ago with Meinl..

This is what I saw at his personal website on the front page -

"some words to the people of the singapore drum fest:
i´m writing this while lying in bed with fever.
i´m really sorry that i couldn´t come to visit your beautiful country and the singapore drum festival.
i got sick and at first it looked like it wouldn´t affect it but then it got worse and i really had to stay in bed for more than 2 weeks.
i never cancell any gigs and it´s certainly more fun to travel the word and play drums for you people ...
but sometimes you can`t do anything about it.
i couldn´t play nor could i travel.
i´m sorry and want to tell you that i would love to play for you next year.
i wish boon and his team all the best for the festival...have fun with all the other great artists and see you soon.
all the best.
benny

I HOPE to see Benny next year :)

Hey, its really hard to put together a backup plan for things like these....especially when it happened at such a short notice.

I've been to other festivals overseas and never once I see a complete turn-out by the artises. It is really difficult to find a replacement act at such a short notice...there's so much to do...getting equipment wise is a huge enough headache already. I know some kits are ordered way in advance just so that the artist get their required specs...not easy man.

I know appreciation and satisfaction are two diff things....but even though this has happened, I'm still satisfied that there're many other killer drummers that's performing....its gonna be good still lah....I can't wait man!!

yeah benny's illness was an unfortunate timing, but as drummers, we should all support the festival no matter what.

this is a groundbreaking event, first time ever in asia, and as much as benny's no-show was a bummer, the other drummers are definitely an eye-opener themselves!

it's normal to have favourites and to look forward to certain drummers, but as drummers in every aspect of the word, and with great appreciation of music, the other drummers will definitely overshadow benny's no-show.

it's time for some of us to expose ourselves to the different genres of music and the different playing styles of the drumkit!

man it looks like some people took my post way out of context (not directed at anyone who posted in this thread, rather those who read it but didn't reply). I got some people telling me that I shouldn't have wrote what i wrote.

I'm afraid that i will have to stand by what i wrote, but i want to clarify that i, IN NO WAY, am discouraging anyone from going to the drumfest or asking anyone for a refund. I was just really, really, really disappointed and to a certaine extent, angry. But truth to be told i wasn't expecting any kind of compensation at all.

benny is an awesome drummer, so awesome that i feel this emptiness in me right now that he's not coming. so i hope people understand. i still stand by the things i said, but i'm not blaming anyone at all. who can i blame for this? god? come on...

i'm sure that we all criticise only when we know that something could have been better. this drumfest FOR ME could've been a lot better.

anyway, have a rocking good time at the drumfest people! I'm sure it'll be one hell of a show, with or without benny.

Totally blown away~

but sadly the turnout was quite a shame
hope tml will be betta

Day 1:
Our local under 21 drummer kicks that ang moh butt.
Gregg was entertaining, superb! Playing to Bollywood was great too.
Steve Thorton and Noor Mohammed were entertaining although I thought it was too long and repetitive.
Derek  was fast and incredible and friendly!! Unexpectedly, Grant Collin was magnificently great. He gives me a partial headache. Very hard to count his subdivisions. All spot on. 8O My mathematics is bad
Jojo was very educating and thumbs up for him. But I think his real sound engineer fella almost break my ear drums.
Very Long day and Tiring. Can see Jojo walking around the venue impatiently.
All the drummers play different types of music. Nice.
Also I managed to get a glimpse of a few nice chicks. Need to talk to em too.
I managed to get all the drummers to sign on my Remo head. Nice. I like.
