Singapore band no image?

IMO

Advertise, advertise, advertise!!

Promote, promote, promote!!!

I relieased that the reason why chinese singers( no offence) can make an impression is also because of the label's ability to promote them.

Making your band well known in Singapore is fairly easy. But in other countries, it may be hell. You can gig from orchard to toa payoh to get a fan base but are you gonna do that for the whole of Asia? Or America?

Let us not forget that these kinda gigs are usually cheap or free because, lets be real, who would pay $50+++ for tix to a gig of a band you've never really heard before.

So promoting plays a big part in the image section.

my personal opinion

who cares if a band has long hair or short hair or wears mask and prance around the stage. the most important thing in music is how the music itself. yes definately image is an important thing... but i believe bands like slipknot did not start out playing with masks. I am actually pretty impressed by the bands in singapore, and they do not get very far because there isnt a huge population over here and only a portion of us listens to bands. I'm proud that we do not use gimmicks to promote ourselves (no offence to bands like ronin and such )

the bottom line fcuk talentless bands that use image to sell

right now the argument seems to be that bands with talent don't have image and bands that have image don't have talent.

this is pretty flawed! it's like saying you can't be a good musician if you're a good performer, or that you can't be a good performer if you're a good musician.

bottom line is, image makes a difference. between two bands that are equal in talent, performance-wise and musically, it is the band with the better branding, image and fanbase that will be more successful.

and if you are a good musician but have poor image, stop complaining that less proficient musicians with better image are more successful than you. do something about it. =)

i think if you're playing rock music. no point trying to act all virtuoso and think that its all music and little or no image. if you're playing rock and pop music, you are both musician and entertainer. its your responsibility to dress up also.

if you really wanna play something which is all music and not bout how you like then can try jazz or prog or something.

i really agree with the original poster.

and there are many decent musicians out there who do bother to dress up and work on an image.

In a way, we can actually relate this to a business outfit. The way you are dressed, your business language, your presentation and the impression it leaves behind... Image does play an important role no matter how witty a manager can be.

On a sidenote, I have always seen image as "corporate identity" of the musicians/bands. One of the key factors in "image" is to project the bands as they are, other than mere make-up and pretty photoshoots. If you attempt to project an "image" so different from the style of the musician/bands, it becomes unaceptable because in our mind, we are still picturing that particular musician/band the way they were when they first stepped out. That is why packaging of artistes often goes through a long planning stage, refitting, and countless brainstorming sessions. It's not just putting on fanciful clothes and take a few pictures and that's it.

image is one thing... substance is another. if you don't have the substance, it'll be hard for any band to make it big. if you don't make good music that people can enjoy, nobody will support.

in conclusion, it's the music that matters.

speaking of which "image', is VERY HARD TO DEFINE. a group of visual keiers who start walking down the street will most probably be laughed and mocked at by the majority. In japan, they think its cool n stuff. so wheres the fking logic man, wad fking image. singaporeans don support local bands because they have the mentality that anything local SUCKS. Oh wait, the amount of people really knowing their band stuff are the minority.

tera. i totally agree... especially the parts where "singaporeans don support local bands because they have the mentality that anything local SUCKS."

this statemment i totally agree with...

singaporeans are pretty narrow minded when it comes to such things...

Just like someone who bought the Electrico album and later ask for a refund because its a LOCAL band album. Thats why now Electrico will sing "WE ARE NOT MADE IN THE USA". Thats the mentalty that anything local SUCKS.

Thats Chinese Black Metal band ChthoniC from Taiwan. They just release an English version of "Seediq Bale".

i think bands in general require a lot of substence and/or image to make it big

but thats just a requirement... only once u have those, then u can think of promoting/advertising and all...

an example of substence with not overpower image is Dream Thearter... though portnoy does all those out of this world tricks while continuing to drum insanely at dead right tempos... and Petrucci just needa look at his pedals, show his Buffed bod and shred... and Rudes does not quite jump around while playing his keys... they're still darn darn famous and the crowd they attract are those who appreciate virtuoso kinda music... not to mentioned, JP's side project, liquid tension exp, also helped boost DT's image as that

there's are tons of other bands with a high degree of image but not as much skill and they are capable of attracting a lot of people... but these fans are a diff type compared to those like DT and the likes...

Basically, people need to have the right image, a certain standard of music and a lot of promotion/advertisement in order to get a huge fan base... any missing component would cripple the band in some way in terms of geting a huge fan base...

take Ronin for example... 1st, they had the skills and the music... and maybe slightly later they had an image... next, when they're popularity started to grow underground, they produced an album with quite an interesting cover... and of course tey also had some photo shoots of them in some cos play japanese samurai themed thingy which corresponds with their band's name... + levan

what's next? mega promotion of the band on all sorts of media... on the radio, P10, power 98 etc... on the web, Fster, myspace, and their own website etc... some kinda endorsement from g77 (sean) AND not forgetting, the 101 sch tours... what's the result? i guess almost like 70% of singaproe teens know them?

now, to people who are very very informed and knows a lot of local bands and are regular gig-goers, ronin might seem like just an ordinary band and all... but for people who're new to the scene, ronin is one of the few bands that they know...

this is an example of how, skills, image and marketing is needed to make a lot of people know that bands exsist... as for whether they like them... thats a diff story... maybe people don't like rock? maybe people discriminate against local music? 101 reasons for them to not like local bands even though they're famous...
