Simple Songs that Speak Volumes

Guys,
Lately I've been listening to some really amazing simple songs? The type with like, 1 guitar, 1 vocalist, thats it.

And its just magical.

The lyrics, the emotions behind the voice, the plain acoustic guitar. Its just magical. I could listen to the songs and learn about the person who penned it, just like that. Its like a blog without the nonsense. Fantastic.

I think we all realise how little of such magical music we have nowadays.

Well, I figured its something worth sharing. Something to inspire musicians. Yeah, I might be a rock instrumental player/composer, but these guys teach me something every time I listen to them, I learn things like the simplicity of the song. Makes me crack my brains on how to make my guitar speak, take the place of the human voice, and make my guitar come alive. Its just... such a revelation to me.

Check some of them out.

Bob Marley's Redemption Song

Tracy Chapman's Fast Car

Simon & Garfunkel's The Sound of Silence

These songs send shivers down my spine. I could listen to them over and over again... I guess thats what a good song is. Don't need fancy solos or even a whole band, just too much soul.

What else have you guys have?

haha, yes I am okay goose!

Its just sort of an eye opener for me, haivng listened to "complicated" songs most of my life, blind guardian, a little DT, you know, stuff with a full band.

And recently, heard soem of these songs and wham!

Eh, u dun like ah? Not analog enough meh?

Actually i was listening to folk music when i picked up guitar!!
My all time fav ...

Hi Shred,

it's a sign of maturity you're exhibiting, and it bodes well for your musicianship.

Other examples include any ballad that the Beatles have recorded, e.g. 'Yesterday'. You should also check out John Lennon's acoustic songs that recently saw light of day on a CD after Yoko Ono approved its release from the vault.

- Stevie Ray Vaughan on his 12-string acoustic singing 'Life By The Drop'
- Pink Floyd on 'Wish you Were Here'
- The Who on 'Behind Blue Eyes'
- The Moody Blues on 'Nights in White Satin'
- Keb Mo's first album
- Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska album
- Neil Young's albums such as 'Harvest', 'Comes A Time', 'After the Gold Rush'
- Bread's 'Diary', 'Aubrey', 'If'
- Simon and Garfunkel's '59th Street Bridge song', "April Come she will', 'Old Friends', 'America'
- Bob Dylan's 'Freewheelin' Bob Dylan', 'The times They are A-changin', 'Bringing it all back home' and 'Blonde on Blonde' albums
- America 'Ventura Highway', 'Sister Golden Hair', 'Horse With No Name',
'daisy Jane'
- Paul Simon's 'Rene And Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After The War'

And many more if you dug hard enough.

All the best in your quest 8)

Wow Azaro, thats a boatload... the bulk of the songs seem to come from a select few no?

I might turn acoustic too at the end of the day. :D And start singing!

But yes, the beauty in simplicity. Ridiculously difficult.

Eh Goose, u started on folkies, then what happened now? You're like so... mish mash, noise/feel/rock/punk hybrid now!

I'm slowly going thru this list... MAN. I need the time to sit and listen and absorb. Gotta find the lyrics, find out why they sing it...

Okay. Now. I have a whole new, unexplored world there.

Funny thing. I don't sing. I can't really sing. And I'm doing all this , because I feel i can connect their songs to my guitar playing. Strange.

Love, me - collin raye
Let it be me - collin raye
if tomorrow never come - ronan keating
vincent - don mclean
nobody knows u when u are down n out - eric clapton unplugged
wind beneath my wings- Bette Midler
desperado - eagles

not all are acoustic......but simple songs without the "shredding solo", and have me listen and listen again

Clapton.

Aye.

His acoustic unplugged...

Running on Faith.

That song, the lyrics, the slide solo, WOW.

I mean, you shed tears listening to some of these songs.

Lyrics has always been neglected, but it really shares the same percentage of importance as the melody to make the song touching.

I believe those songs that make u listen and listen again probably has a great piece of lyrics :)
