Best Rhythm Guitarists

John Frusciante
Henry Garza ( Los Lonely Boys )
Rob Harris ( Jamiroquai )
Al McKay ( Earth, Wind and Fire )
Nuno Bettencourt

james hetfield of metallica

somehow his repetitive riffing and grungy vocals are the life of metallica.

and it f*kin' rules

\m/

Yeah, I think Metallica, if James Hetfield is not there, ought to change their name because without James Hetfield, nothing is the same. I really like his vocals too, actually.

Anyone mentioned Eric Peterson of Testament? I think he's an awesome guitarist but always overshadowed by Alex Skolnick.

can't believe thread has lasted 7 pages without any mention of Pete Townshend?!

here's him doing Pinball Wizard solo in the early 80s YouTube - Pete Townshend-Pinball Wizard - nuff said.

other votes for great rhythm players:
Malcolm Young
Bille Joe Armstrong (stop laughing)
special mention for Tim Armstrong (strangely no relation to billie) - try playing ska grooves on the downstroke... i still can't kena that!

also have to give props to Plain Sunset's Jon Chan, who is by far one of the best rhythm guitarists i have had the pleasure of watching and playing with. i used to think my rhythm was good, but after constantly playing with him for the past 5+ years, this guy totally takes me to school everytime with his crazy tight rhythm groove. AND! he's a pretty sick lead player when he wants to.

i understand. Its either the lead or the vox who always gets the attention. haha! BUT Hey... we are playing music... not to get attention or to show off.... play with passion..... not seeking attention...

haha coincidentally Alex and Kirk hammet were both taught by satriani....lol

if any band does that all the time, they'll suck big fat ass all the time.

Well just because you don't cut it and can't pull that off doesn't mean you get to say they suck. I know I can't do that, I don't really like it that much either, just that any band doing that, immediately gets my respect. Either way I can't do that in my current band, I don't like working with other guitarists, so I play as a single guitarist, where bass plays the part of the rhythm and does some soloing as well.

haha harmonised lead solos= sex baby!

but its pretty true la.....gotta be of a certain technical proficiency to pull off that kinda stuff...and coordination and timing has to be very tight......

I'm not really a fan of harmonised guitar solos.....more to interplay with other instruments...for example, jon lord and ritchie blackmore from deep purple and their dual lead guitar and organ harmony....or steve vai and a saxaphone player(cant remember his name) playing unison lines...makes for a nice and different vibe :D

Steve Smyth played lead for Testament at one point, if I remember correctly. He had this sharp-looking BC Rich.

Yeah! Eric Peterson! My all-time favourite rhythm guitarist. He played both on the Demonic album though, he played both rhythm and lead since he was the only guitarist. His leads and solos were very good, I feel.
