hi guys,

as per thread title, i hope you guys can help me recommend me a:

- high gain, very thick chugga chugga if u know what i mean even as standalone as the last time i got the wanted sound is when i stack 2 drives.
- not harsh, not into the metal area an example like the ritchie sambora's tone in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFPcMlNml0s
- something with 3 eq controls if possible ie, low, mids, high
- budget set at $200?

so far the pedals i've scouted are either too harsh or don't have the 3 eq controls like the VS son of hyde and Hardwire valve distortion.

my gears if u need to know is an ibanez with high output passive pickups with a vox pathfinder 15r.

if the requirements are not achievable, do tell me ok? thx!

I don't really know the names of the pedals but try looking out for Mesa circuit emulators. I also use 15R and the Mesa pedal my friend made gives a really strong sound on it. And I'm just using a Strat copy. So your Ibanez should be able to pump out even more :)

Hey, if your willing to spend a bit more the damage control pedals are great. i really recommend the womanizer. bt if you want something cheaper then either the liquid blues or solid metal. you can find video and sound clips here

Boss Metalzone MT-2, definitely one of the most versatile distortion pedals out there.

i got mine from sweelee at 120. but what do i know? just a suggestion cheers:)

try to get an mij ds-1.. or the marshall guvnor or something they got the mid treble and bass control...

tubescreamer: yes i've checked out both pedals. the metal distortion is too harsh, though i still plan to get it for other purposes. the barber dirty bomb is alil harsh too, and lacks the mids control(i'd like a knob rather than a switch). something u get from a pop-punk palm muted riff?

kajamaru: wow those things sound good, but man they are massive. real estate bro. hehe.

malcolm: mt2? nah. thats my first pedal and i think my worse so far. thanks anyway.

teleplayer: ds1? i played my friends ds2 and the amount of gain is like half of my needs. ok im kidding. but still its low gain.

subversion: ahh thats something to consider. just took a demo listen and it sounds good. but damn the controls. seems complicated. but, definitely one to shortlist. thanks!

so far the pedals im considering are:
- visual sound son of hyde (no bass controls though)
- hardwire valve distortion (no mids control, only a switch)
- biyang metal end king (to many controls and man its big)
- wampler plextortion the 5 knob version (expensive at $325)

if you wish for simplicity but in need of a great resourse, the amp's default distortion is a more prudent consideration.

i'd rather you have options (many switches- not using? leave it alone...) for considerations as opposed to not having any to begin with... 8-)

subversion: haha of course an amp's distortion is most demanded. but i'd like to keep my tone portable if u know what i mean ;) and yeah that's why, despite the complications, i'd still consider it. tone. its the tone.

Do note that another key factor in getting that 'chugga chugga' is your amplifier. The Pathfinder 15R, with it's 8" speaker, will not be able to manifest as much low end as you need. As such, the lower frequencies tend to flub out. Perhaps you could try to compensate with an EQ pedal of some sort? The Danelectro Fish n Chips is a decent pedal for about $60.

Eugene: i already own one ;) but i feel its rather harsh. im not looking for heavy metal chugg. i want something polite. think poppunk chugg but with more chugg! haha!

tubescreamer: i already own a boss EQ. i'd like one pedal to manifest that sound as a standalone. hmm the amp's quite a problem i guess. but im getting a vox ac4tv in the future. if im not wrong it has a 10" speaker. should be better.

would you consider tube-equipped units as well?

wow tube equipped. im not one who is careful with my stuff to have a tube pedal on the road! haha.

guys, i'd not like one going into the metal heaviness! a more polite distortion. with polite and smooth chugg.

In that case, I'd recommend the Boss DS-2 Turbo distortion. Really nice pedal for pop-punk, rock and pretty much anything from blues to hard rock. My bandmate has one, but the thing is that I find the brand new price at Swee Lee frankly overpriced.

I've heard good things about the Modtone Speedbox distortion but I haven't personally tried out its tone yet. I fingered it before though, really compact, light-weight pedal that's easy to bring around.

godspeed64: thanks for the reco. i guess the tones of the pedals u recommended, the metal based ones. i have one pedal that does the same. =)).

eugene: yeaps my friend has the ds2, still not enough chugg for me. haha. the modtone, i see. have yet to test them. saw them when i went to svguitars. may give them a try.

so far, the pedal that fits my description based on youtube clips is the biyang metal end king http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZuOOO59H-8&feature=channel_page#movie_player. tonal possibilties, harsh and not, at high gain, is something im looking for, to replace my beta aivin hm200 which i find rather harsh.

i have a few that come to mind..

1. Barber Dirty Bomb.

very impressed by this clip:
http://tindeck.com/listen/mcli

this is the shit, imo..

2. Tech 21 California

if u really really insist on a 3band eq. from what i've heard, (i've not played it before) it was designed to be used with an audio interface rather than being plugged direct into an amplifier, because cabinet simulation is alrdy on on the pedal or something. so it might not sound as good. some ppl still say it sounds decent in front of an amp.

i'd say go with a barber dirty bomb. u cannot get it wrong with a barber product.. for 160 u can get many other pedals that just cannot match the build quality and tones of the dirty bomb. i love barber products and i'm trying my best not to sound really biased here but its extremely worth testing it.
