Randolf Arriola (embryo) Guitar Gear 101

heehee...
One more question!
This question had been bugging me for the pass week or so:
Quilted maple top or flamed maple top tone better?
:)

Better? You mean aesthetically right? :)

Bookmatched clean Quilted Maple tops like those used on the discontinued Ernie Ball EVH guitars are now apparently rarer compared to Flame Maple.

:)

I steam liao!!!! nice quilt

Randolf, my cousin will check the prices of Fender 1954 Custom Shop Strat in Sydney this sat. Hopfully will have some good news.

Ernie Ball and Peavey in taking turns making the EVH and Wolfgang guitars for Sir Eddie Van Halen basically acquired n used justabout all if not most of the available best old Quilted Maples. So pristine Quilts are really special. :) Ahhhhhh! Soooooo nice! :)

But the Peavey ones are not as consistent in quality as the EBMMs... The best Peavey Wolfgang I saw locally is in my friend's collection, the birds eye maple on that baby is to die for... He paid AUS$5k for it...

I duuno why but I really wished I bought me a nice EBEVH when it first came out. urrgh! "Slap Myself!"

Re: What reason should I chose the HK MKII over the MESA MKIV besides the versatility of the HK?"

Having played both the H&K mk1 and a Mesa MkIII, I think that the Mkiv can be as versatile as the H&K.

Tweaking a Mesa or god forbid a Mkiv is a real b*tch. Because the controls are so interactive, tweaking anything affects everything. Love the gain tone once you've dialed in a setting, then it goes to hell once you try and tweak it a bit more.

The H&K was a 5 min affair of tweaking all channels to something I was fairly happy to jam on.

Tweaking aside, they both have gain tones to die for, its a matter of preference.

I do give the Triamp the edge cause I managed to tweak more mid-gain tones and I think if you're looking for an amp to create your own signature sound, its a good base to work from. Mesa's to me are on too many recordings nowadays.

About Mesas, I really don't like the rectifier series, it has a particular frequency that I can't seem to dial out, I guess it's one of the amp's characteristics,

i agree, both the triaxis and recto pre have a strong midrange thing going on thats nearly impossible to dial out on the amp itself if you're going for a certain high gain scooped tone.

used a GE-7 with a massive mid scoop in the triaxis loop to record the guitars on the MV album, definately could have worked out better but it's a learning experience. cranked gain bad, layering good.

i wouldn't say mesa's are overhyped, just that they have a strong connotation with the typical nu-metal/rock sound of the 90s-00s. definately capable of much more with proper tweakage.

i dont own a mesa, but i tried the rectifier a few times and it was a tough time getting a gd tone out of it. Its not like some amps, where u setup n put some basic eq n wala. I had to fiddle n fiddle n still i wasnt happy.

hk i havnt tried one yet, but looking at the clips n all, i guess it really great

Mesa's Dual Rectifier is the BOMB!...and then some :)

The Dual Rectifier is absolutely gorgeous (imaginably)in the hands of players like Eric Johnson, Robben Ford, Larry Carlton, Allan Holdswoth, Eddie Van Halen... who've developed a level of playing where they want to derive more tonal variations based on instant dyanmics changes from picking strenght, muting and position and type of pick across the strings.

Understandably not something for everyone but when the sweetspot of pre and power tubes and the eqs are adjusted just right, with the help of drive pedals (eg. eq, compressor, od, dist or fuzz)the rectifier tubes will react to the players touch in an almost organic way. This is because (rectifiers) are supplying the voltage juice to the entire circuit and especaially the Power Tube section and when you slam at the strings the rectifiers will create an almost "cushioned" effect usually described as "sag" but really instead of getting louder it just sounds more saturated and mid rangy thick but when you gliss the pick or fingers over the strings the tone is glassier.

No pedal in my experience then or now has yet to faithfully replicate this phenomenon of full tube amps especially those with Tube Rectifiers.

....now if only H&K could provide the tube rectifier/silicon rectifier option to their Triamp Mk II....i could quite possibly be much happier person for a much longer time! Yeah right dream on!

Hahahahahahaha!

So fellas describe ur dream amp! Come on!

:)

ive some questions for randolf .. but before that, i think it's most impt to concentrate on getting good tone out of the fingers than any thing else

1) which dyna compressor is good? mxr?

2) is swee lee's maintenance and repair dept reliable? hmm

3) what's the difference between overdrive and distortion?

4) what are the different types of strings out there... i kinda confused with this wound that wound and the difernt metal etc etc

i will have more questions in the future!

CHEEEEEEEEERSS!!
