You should watch Season1, every episode, in full.
The tatoos are not just for escape routes.
The very first use of his tatoos is to locate a bolt.
Scofield then unscrewed it from one of the benches in the prison open area,
with a coin,
he then turned that bolt into a screw driver,
to release the nut on the basin area in his cell,
to gain access to a tunnel.
The tatoos were about all the little details of how the prison was engineered.
