Pop Piano Improvisation Course, which school better?

Hi guys, I thought of taking Pop Piano course and probably will be taking Jazz Piano in future. Any recommendations of schools that are quite good in teaching both Pop and Jazz piano? There are 2 schools which I'm considering (Play by Ear & North Wood) but not sure whether they are really good in these areas as in improvisations and theory stuffs. Any suggestions or comments about these schools?

hi Coppola

do you have any experience in keyboard playing? or what's your musical background?

I've been through 2 months worth of Pop Piano lessons in another school which I didn't really like and have some self-learned musical knowledge. That's about it.

what was the thing you didnt like about your previous school?

i feel that since you are starting from begineer's, you can join any school to experience their short-term lesson package. something like 3-months beginners'. these package are quite similar. 12 lessons to loosen your fingers and be able to coordinate left-right hand. understand notation and some music theory.

My previous school is more into c-pop and I realized the instructor couldn't teach certain songs (english and jpop songs that are mostly in minor scales) that I wanted to learn. Her excuse was "not my style" (which sounded more like "i don't know how") and I felt really shortchanged.

Another reason is that because they teach mostly c-pop, they are using chinese notation. I feel that I'm missing out on some important things.

They also don't teach improvisation. I would rather go for a more jazz/improvisation-oriented course than a c-pop one.

Coppola, any of the 2 you mentioned is fine. As soft said, at this stage, it doesn't really matter. However your C-pop course is probably not the way to go. My impression is that teach portasound, but I may be wrong. And yes, reading "jian pu" (chinese notation) is not the way to go for pop piano. But it's still a useful thing to learn and familiarize yourself with.

However, with the no. of expertise in SOFT, if we form our own school, it will probably be better than many out there... A thought for James. Easy for me to say, not so easy to realise.... :D

Thank you for your advice. Really appreciate it.
You said at this stage, the school doesn't matter. Does it mean that in future I might have to change school? I rather choose one now and stayed with it permanently.

Coppola, in a learning environment, the teacher kinda have a plan to help student achieve certain proficiency within a time period.

like learning to drive, one usually start with a Corolla or Sunny. yes, our aim is to drive a Murciélago but it is good that we got to get our class 3 first.

ya, after you graduate from primary school, you choose your secondary school and JC/Poly after that. then your major in tertiary.

Cheez, after we retired, we put together our CPF and start a school ok?

When we retire, people will be using brainwaves to trigger keyboards. I don't think they will need a school like ours...

in future people use eye power to trigger keyboards and computers.

just like one movie some time back ??? what movie was that ?

I thought they can now use eye movements to move cursors on the monitor screen. Read that recently somewhere.

Anyway, we are really going OT...

I think its not so much the school but which particular instructor...

First there must be chemistry....then whether can he or she understand what you wanna focus on learning....

Certain types of instructor will suit different students.....so just have to trial...is not suitable...then ask for a change of instructor....

In a school...there are usually many instructor and each have different strong points...

LOLX ....

guys .... remember that we use 10 finger to play??
but only have 1 pair of eyes to focus on? ... i can imagine the trouble to keep jumping around our eyes on that white n black thingy .... will get eye sore i guess ...

=P

music school!!! ....
the ONLY music school teaching analog synth .... how cool is that? ...
that can try ... with the amount of keyboard and synth expertise here ... =P
teach synthesis also ...... hahahaha ...... (do u happen to find any school teach that already? ... can be quite a good idea ... )

ive been to play by ear. its really good there. my gf is learning there currently. the pianist there are really v good. hahaha.. try it.

Yamaha vs Others

Hi, just checking the opinions....

What do you guys think abt Yamaha school's pop piano/improvisation course vs other pop piano schools' (such as Play By Ear, Northwood, etc)?

Heard that Yamaha's courses has got more structure whereas others are quite lacking.....

Which is better for a pop piano improvisation student?

depends on personal preferences. some people like structure, some people like flexibility.. when there's flexibility, the instructor can tailor the teachings specifically to the student's needs. when there's structure, it's more rigid, but also easier to feel a sense of achievement.
