Greetings...
Greetings,
I've been in SOFT for quite sometime and this is my first post. Been reading these threads abt gig issues and been refraining myself frm comments.... but can't help it this time... This post is pretty long, so bear with it...
We're in business of organising corporate events (carnivals, showcases, parties etc)... As a business entity, I felt obliged to share this with local bands (especially the new ones) from a business perspective.
In my opinion, the standing issue is not just about making bands to sell tickets to perform. There are other issues which requires attention and understanding from the bands and organisors alike.
Believe it or not good local bands are in fact in demand. What we're looking for are good, very good local bands. Bands that can get the crowd 'turned on'. When we organise a corporate event, be it outdoor or indoor event, what the clients want are solid performers, crowd entertainers/pullers in line with its theme. It is our responsibility to meet our clients' requirements. Sadly there are only a handful bands here in S'pore capable of that.
Other than engaging the established few bands and professional musicians, we scout new bands for our events from our studio jammers or thru some recommendations from very very close source. We do not have time to scout at other gig venues, myspace or other social networking sites. Of course there are limited opportunities for death, thrash and other dark bands unless our parties/events are themed as such.
We never ask bands to pay, never ask for auditions, never tell to sell tix, never tell to do publicity and never tell them to jam at our studios. In fact, we give FREE practice hrs at our studio for the band (especially new bands we spotted) prior to the show. If we know the band is good, we'll put them in the event and pay them. Depending on the scale of the event and the band's credentials, bands are paid from S$300-S$5000.
To new bands (esp those looking for paid gigs): be good.. be very good with your music. The band will attract attention only when they're tight and entertaining; Make yourself known to relevent people; Treat your press kits as a tool to promote yourself, not by giving them to your friends or family members. You cannot get a good paying performance if no one knew you. No event company would engage you if they don't know you. We're all aware of crappy CD sales figures. Another avenue of getting back some funds is thru paying performances.
To local gig organisors/promoters: i applaud your efforts to provide platform for new local bands to perform. I admire the enthusiasm, drive and believe you have. You guys have provided stepping stone for the bands. Your gigs could open doors for these bands to get spotted.
But don't just organise a gig for the sake of it. I trust that you valuate your gigs based on the selection of the performers. Though the business of making money is not your top agenda, ensure that all efforts are paid, including yours. But if you trust your current business formula, go ahead and be true to it. Nobody can say it's the right or wrong thing to do if it satisfies your basic requirements.
Every businesses have its own unique ways of operating. An organisor can have formula A for its business and another organisor have formula B. It is not nice to to criticise others' business methods. That is something you can't enforce.
Our stand in Chapter6 is: Our priority and responsibility is towards our clients and sponsors. The development and management of our local bands/artistes is not our primary duties. But, being a former musician myself, I understand the predicament these bands are in. We'll gladly provide whatever help we can to local bands (esp new ones). However, this will only be done without compromising our primary responsibility, priority and the integrity of the company. We'll find foreign talents if none of our locals meet our requirements and do the job.
Some of you may or may not agree with this post. These are just views from business perspective. Our operations for almost four years have seen the opening of our production/rehearsal studio in Jalan Besar and a head office in Henderson. From being in a band, a two man operation when the business was 1st set-up, we now have 20 full time staffs in our payroll. This is not a boast but to highlight that there are opportunities in the industry. Reserve all resentments and work towards achieving your goals.

NOTE: James did a brilliant job for setting up SOFT as platform for local musicians. HATS OFF to him...
I thank you for reading this. Next post will be 2 or 3 years later.
