in all my life ive been using multi effects, and finally i feel like making the jump to stompboxes. i know very very little about all the effects you guys are talking about, and i play a wide range of genres from blues, to jazz, to metal rock etc.so basically do you guys have any suggestions on which kinda effects i should invest in,and perhaps plan out a whole pedal board for me pleaseeeeee ( i know its spoonfeeding ): but hahaha)

heh, answer these question first

1) Budget

2) Having played multi efx, whats the preference for the individual efx in the multi efx

3) are you into modulation effect, if yes, what are the modulation you like, from the multi efx

4) Do you prefer crunch, overdrive, distortion or fuzz

5) Quote a few artist whose sound you can used as reference for recommendation. Genre mentioned is too wide and withineach genre, the sound can varies wide apart as well.

thats all for now. It will make the job of whoever is spoonfeeding, easier. If not, the recommendation that you will get prolly not as useful and might make you waste money, time and effort chasing after individual stompboxes.

for a distortion box ..this is the one i like the most... try sansamp gt2.. its really nice.. u can get a fender clean blues tone to an overdiven blues tone, or a marshall clean to heavy overdrive and a warm clean to heavy gain distortion/overdrive mesa boogie amps.. nice one

and don't forget ... a Tube screamer :D ts 808 or ts 9

for a wah pedal... i dont use a wah till now :p .. but my friend go to crybaby and upgrade it a little to clyde Mc Coy style ..(sorry i forgot the detail)
some of my friend uses morley too

the delay ... my friends uses boss dd3 ... and some other uses a digitech delay

the reverb ..use the amp's reverb

bro start it from sansamp gt2 ... try the sound sample on musicianfriends.com

well budget isnt a problem as i do understand the quest for tone can be very very expensive, i used a podxtlive for quite a long time and most of my tones are actually downloaded from the net and im a complete idiot at what combinations i used

i play alot of symphony x,trivium, iron maiden, black sabbath, metallica and children of bodom
actually i play alot of stuff like gnr led zep acdc x japan etc
occasionally i play punk rock and some mainstream stuff and i do enjoy the cleans of john mayer and play christian music too. all this time ive been downloading tone patches of the web so i pretty much know nothing, do i need many many pedals to get the tones of the above artists?

man welcome to the mad world that is stompboxes!

Get a TS9 based pedal, but dont get the current Ibanez versions. They really don't sound great. Unless you mod it. But why waste time, get something like a M.I Audio Crunchbox or if you can find them, a Maxon OD9. Maybe a Boss OD1. Hehe.
You can be rather safe with most TS9 clones and boutiques out there, and there are millions, just how much you are willing to spend.

Get a analog delay, like a Maxon AD999, or a Boss DM2 if it comes into the market. Its way warmer then a Analogman Analog Delay. A digital one you might want to go for a Nova Delay. It has tap tempo and a whole host of delay options. Pay money la... A T-Rex Replica is also highly recommended and one pedal that will be on my pedal board in the future.

Analogman Chorus are great, or a Boss CE2. If you want the option of a wide spectrum of chorus sounds while being able to solo without muddying it up with a chorus, a Boss DC2 or DC3 will help you. And their pink! who wouldn't find that awesome?

Get two drive pedals, one maybe a heavier drive like a Kimjawbetta Rutt or the Crunchbox and then put a Tubescreamer style pedal infront, so you can have the option of a rhythm sound, two pedals on for a lead, and the TS pedal for John Mayer crunchy munchy stuff.

Don't forget power supply! and patch cables. They make a big difference in your tone, if you get a crap power supply or strange patch cables.

Everything else like a wah, clean boost, compressor and further modulations are up for your taste. You can have 7 overdrive pedals for all we care, have fun tone shaping!

I'm not a distortion guy so I cant help you on the heavier stuff. But maybe you could get a nice good stonking tube amp, get a attenuator and bang on the heavy stuff? Use a od pedal to drive your overdriving amp into gain territory...

u need a tuner, an overdrive, a distortion, a delay and u're good to go.

i'll just throw in a few suggestions.

overdrive - barber ltd, ibanez ts9, ocd,

distortion - 7theaven, crunchbox, direct drive

delay - mxr carbon copy (analog) boss dd6 (digital)

And after you've got one of each ...

You'll need a phaser, a tremolo, another od or 2, another delay with preset option, a wah, a volume pedal, a boost, an eq, a noise reduction pedal, etc. :)

help on TS-9!

ahh..dis just the thread dat i need. Ayw, just like ladyintears, i've been using multi-effects ever seen i pickup the guitar. well the question is, how do i use or get the most of the Ibanez Tubescreamer? I've read a lot of reviews and recommendations about this pedal but i'm struggling to get the tone out of it.

Can this pedal work alone by itself? As in, if I use the drive mode of my amp together with the pedal, i can get the roar and heavy distortion/drive (though not tat heavy), but when run through on the clean mode, the sound kinda weak (err... i really dunno what's the term to use, hope u get what i mean), not really crunchy and meaty. I compare it with the same setup but with an OD-2 and it sounds better.

Ayw, i'm using an OLP John Petrucci Model and some old Hiwatt amps. I've also tested it while jamming at beat merchant (marshall valvestate) and stone jams (some smarvo & ibanez amps) and really i kinda struggling to make it scream.

What is tat i need? A change of pick-ups? mod my pedal? get more pedal to work with it? equalizer? compressor? another dist/od pedal?:confused:

I'm trying to achieve sounds like Iommi, Blackmore, Page, SRV and old skool metal. Can anyone advise me here? kinda depressing to get that pedal and like kinda not making the most out of it! dis the reason why i've been using multi-effects ever seen.. ahahaha..sad rite, i noe.. please advise.. thanks ya'll....

The TS to me is best used to push an already overdriven amp.. when used on the clean channel, the TS will more likely just be an overdrive pedal that will not scream..

Try stacking it with another OD/Distortion pedal, the TS pushing another OD/Distortion pedal will definitely scream..

I played my Maxon OD9 into a Smarvo stack before and I tell you it was chunky and full and single notes were soaring! Yes a Smarvo stack...

TS9s are overdrives, their not meant for hi-gain. You may have tried a Zakk Wylde MXR Overdrive and its not hi-gain either. I was surprised when I was younger that I couldn't do Zakk's harmonics very well with it. Well you see OD pedals are meant to do just what they say, drive your sound over.

So if you have a loud or overdriving stack or powerful enough amp, kicking in a OD pedal will turn it into your chugga chug chug thing. Or tweak it abit for more fluid solo lines. Thats what countless players do with just a overdriving amp and a OD pedal.

Zakk Wylde tweaks his Marshalls to a AC/DC crunch, usually with a loud pregain, and a lower master volume. Then when he kicks in his overdrive pedal, formerly a Boss SD1.

Trey Anastasio cascades two Anologman TS9s into each other, so he has one later in the chain for riffing, and the one earlier to drive that up and have his beautiful lead lines.
Of course SRV is probably the one who popularize this method. Do note his amps are already out bursting eardrums before he kicks in the pedals.

TS9s and their clones are good for just making your Class A 30watter go into a little bit more of dirt. The 3 controls on a TS9 makes it idiot proof to get a good sound. Want some dirty sounds, just put the Gain control at 9o'clock. Want more volume, but not too much dirt, crank the Volume pass 3oclock and keep the Gain at 8pm. And for Zakk Wylde, everything up lah.

Their great fun, easy pedals and there is a reason why a sizable portion of the pedal market consists of people spending 500bucks on a pedal promising them OD nirvana.

One more thing, don't get a Ibanez TS9. The ones made the past few years really don't give you what the originals sound like. You could get other clones for the same price and they could be that much warmer or more dynamic or less harsh then the current ones.

Do however, get a Maxon OD9. Same circuitry as the originals, as Maxon was the factory that made them way back in the 70s. I've A-Bed my Maxon against quite a few Ibanez TS9s or boutiques, and my Maxon always bites their bollas off...

Yo brader Breen.. thanks for the insightful take, but hor I oredi bought that Ibanez TS-09! ahakz..damn.. ayw, any idea how much it cost to mod tat TS-09 n how much does the Maxon OD-09? watta abt the jemini? anybody got anything to comment on that pedal? saw vai's video on the jemini, it sound sweet but it's only because it's running through his jem and legacy (i think). ;)

thanks for the help man! so basically i need to find a maxon OD9 as you speak highly of it, im interested in the seventhheaven too, but now i need to know, regarding power supply, what do i need?

actually, you can just buy an adaptor.. with daisy chains. I bought my AC adaptor from guitar workshop for 20+...

You can get a VS 1-Spot with MC5/MC8 (Guitar77) or T-Rex Fuel Tank Jr (Davis Guitar).

hey TS, i play rather the same thing as you. so far i've got myself a rather versatile and affordable board.

Wah - Vox V847, very good in doing cleans, though i plan to get it modded by goose.
Tuner - Artec tuner. i dont care what people say. but it just looks bloody cool.
Beta Aivin Hm200 - very versatile distortion. very tweakable.
Biyang od-7 - versatile od with 3 modes(bright, warm, ts)
fab chorus - very cheap, value for money. haha.
digitech digidelay - many modes. cant say much about it.

for now, im just targeting an EQ pedal for solo boost.

whaaat im full from my lunch and dessert. haha ok seriously, been targeting an mxr 10band(it's like why the hell is the 6band one no volume control!!??) or a boss ge-7 or perhaps an AMT one. saw some good offers for the boss. unfortunate my pockets are rather empty the moment. i'll go check out the fish n chips. thanks mus for the suggestion!
