"Pay to perform" ???

somewhere yes, but not ANYWHERE right? hahahaha

for me its either someone really does it for you (but pls be grateful la) or you do it yourself and reap all the experience and benefits of doing yr own show then also u can ensure quality control and ppl turning up to watch at least most of the bands............nuthin sadder than one band play to one bunch of jokers, then....next band next bunch........

I am sure the more mature bands will understand the word Overheads... I believe are those young punks that think they are the best and the whole world owes them a living will not understand the word "Overheads". They probably think all the logistics suddenly just happened overnight without any planning or money...

Pay to perform.

I believe in suffer 1st enjoy later.. Yah the scene now in order to perform u have to pay..but if ur band is uber power n uber tightness n when ur name is upthere. The organizer would pay u to perform instead. Either way is pay to perform. Eg. fgl now earning few Ks already playing at yellow jellow. Respect.

i am not saying pay to play is a good thing, but let's face it. Even some of singapore's best musicians have another job to stabilize themselves in singapore's malnutrition-ed music market. THAT is why certain musicians, like a certain former vocalist of "ss" ran off to the states, auditioned for a band, got selected and resided there for good. Why?because they believe that it's difficult to make money out of music here.
but then, one thing i am not able to understand, if this musician knows that the music scene here is weak, if he/she is good enough, shouldn't this person be contributing his/her talent for the music scene to help improve and add colours to it?instead of just running off to someplace so that u could earn money? not saying money is not important, but then u do 1st your best 1st,then talk later right? in fact i have seen musicians been able to earn money here in singapore through playing music, maybe not as much as he would have liked because although he is good, he is still not a superstar.

You must know what FGL (retro groove) are doing, and what is their setlist.
Do you think people will pay u $ks to perform Metallica or Death metals?

Who would?. . .u have to start sumwhere..i mean u as in overall. . Not u as in urself

Actually don't all the band do that sort of stuff like Dream Theater, they pay the indoor stadium for the venue, pay sistic to advertise their stuff, print posters, etc then they sell tickets get the money to cover up their expenses, air fair also, etc.
they sell cd, merchandise also etc etc
ain't it supose to be like that?

why not ? as long as you've done your part in your band and you get established and people know you , people love you , money will come to you.

We can take Impiety for an example. A plan of bringing them back has started, and they get paid in $ks. c'mon man, music is music , respect is respect , fame is fame . you got fame, you got hell lotsa fans, you get cash no matter what you play.

if every band expects to get paid to play in a gig , the next thread would be ' LACK OF ORGANISERS ' cos whenever a band needs cash , they can just form a temp band and cover some songs during a gig , grab the cash and go and leave the organisers with no cash left. it works both ways , you wanna get paid ? you pay first . prove that you should get paid. its all part and parcel of life in the music scene. but anyway , selling tix gigs are not P2P gigs unless they force you to play. so don't assume that any gig that requires you to sell the tickets are p2p gigs. a band also have to do their part in promoting the event.

anyway , nothing is free in singapore.
pay here pay there.
rental fee increase here and there. maybe its time you start appreciating.

Pay to play. I think it can be defined in many ways. Like if u put in hard work( Jam, put up a solid recording etc), you are putting in money and it kinda builds up ur establishment and reputation and people will start to listen to your music and even catch a gig organiser's attention.

I think without doing any "hard work", you want to play a gig just like that, don't expect to get paid. as for pay to play, i think last time we had a couple of generous organisers giving bands a platform to play but theyre all gone maybe due to loss of money. So i guess the organisers have progressed and learnt that doing so is not logical. Put urself in an organiser's shoe sometimes maybe you might see things their way. Theyre just like partners helping you get a venue for a cheaper price than what he/she is paying.
for eg. 1 venue 1000 bucks, 10 bands, 1 band contribute 100 bucks. 1 band has an average of 4-5 members that makes it $20-25 per head. Not so bad la. Its like paying to register for a competition right?

Organisers asking bands to sell tickets in my point of view is a money making strategy more than a crowd puller. Bands will probably sell it to their friends/families who probably don't even dig their shit but just to support so you wont get a kickass show. People will just stay for their friend's band. Cost is covered, but horrible show.

Moral of the story? Work Hard. Promote your band . Earn the establishment and play shows for free first then expect to get paid when theres like hundreds of fans coming to your show just to see your band.

Go mainstream lor, enter TV competition. I know a superstar contestant got chance to take ad and she quit her SIA job for it. Now promoting in Taiwan I think. Of cos, there is someones(from music industry) backing her up even her progress is slow.

Any supporting facts from you? FGL earns $ks we all know that, but if u can't show the facts, then u should be the one living under a coconut tree and not a shell.
the supporting facts are in his myspace links, just to stop you short of potentially embarrassing yourself. don't take it personally

Oh yah,i am very embarrassed, they are earning $ks and people are paying those amounts to watch them do their shows. But on a personal level,my opinion is their myspaces sux to the metalcore. By the way this topic pertains to singapore music scene,i don't give a concern to malaysian acts or scene,it doesn't bother a thing to me.
