over rated and under rated guitarists

Underrated:

Mike Einziger - Incubus

that guys a bloody talent. tone, voice, keyboards, song writing... my idol totally

wheres my jazzmaster?.......*looks aroound*

Underrated: Alex Lifeson (Rush), Daryl Stuermer (Phil Collins/Genesis guitarist), Nokie Edwards (The Ventures), Hank Marvin (The Shadows), Terry Kath (Chicago).

:)

never was a fan of Slash, agree with you on many levels.

besides, if he was that good, he wouldnt be so sloppy as he is today.

Vai is not overrated just because he composed avant garde gitar composition. Steve vai is more like those 20th century composer in classical music, where mostly today shredders are still in romantic or classical era.

underrated maybe not the correct term, but underfame maybe. This category included, Vinnie Moore, Guthrie Govan.

overrated, maybe most of guitarist in power / heavy metal genre :p

My Opinion,

Neil Zaza is under - rated. He's a solid guitarist and the songs/solo he composed and come up with are catchy and easy to rem. There are also difficult techniques he applied too.
But dunno y he's not as famous as he is supposed to be.

Pata - UNder - rated. Agree. All the glory taken over by hide cos of hide's flamboyancy and yea, the pink hair. But take a closer look, he's actually more skill than hide.

yes, pata is very very much underrated, his solos are require so much more skill and accuracy then those of hide's, and he has to sync his timing to fit their dual solos. it doesnt pay off that he does not have pink hair lol!

and i agree, neil zaza, many of my friends would never have heard of him if i didnt show them how awesome he is, and is it me or does he look like zlatan ibrahimovic? lol

Mark Tremonti and Myles Kennedy from Alter Bridge are extremely under-rated imo... I keep asking a lot of my friends who love rock music who their favourite guitarists are and all they keep saying is slash, van halen, vai and so may more of those over-rated guitarists...

Just by listening to their mesmerising solos and riffs and you'll know why Mark and Myles deserves more recognition... Myles has also the best vocals of rock music today imo...

I've listened to Zaza from '90s, he was there with his 'humble' jorgan, the melodic instrumental guitarist... not sure why is like that :p

Alec skolnick, Neil Schon, Akira Takasaki, are the guys less mentioned.

Over Rated:

Noel Gallagher (Oasis)
Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day)

Under rated:

Josh Farro (Paramore)
John Squire (The Stone Roses)
Bernard Butler (The London Suede, The Tears, Duffy)
Johnny Marr (The Smiths)

steve vai is too postmodern/avant garde, i simply don't get him :)

Yea man, i totally agree. Plus Pata's guitar is strapped so lor. The lower the guitar, the harder it is to play solos. I've always been mesmerized by Pata though i'm also a die hard fan of hide.
Plus i heard Pata is the one who always shares techniques with hide and help hide.
Upz to Pata! Unsung hero of X japan. And u see during the reunion, he is still so adept at the solo. Its seems like he has always been prac X japan's songs even though he has so many bands out there that he's helping.

Poor Neil Zaza.. most of my friends nv heard of him. Till i tell them he's the guy who played "I'm Alright". Haha.. The song is more famous than the person i guess.

Steve Vai. I think he's good and very well verse technically. But sadly i have to agree. He's solos are not catchy. Its juz techniques and scales interchange and intertwine.
But we got to give him the credit though cos he surpass his master, Mr Satriani.

underrated:
Jonny Greenwood
John Squire
Thurston Moore
Bernard Butler
Graham Coxon
Andy Bell
Nobukata Kawai

they are not the best shredder or having the greatest licks, but i think they are one to be reckon for their creativity, originality and ingenious ways on the guitars. just from my point of views.

and i find dream theater and john petrucci to be over rated. too mechanical and pretentious with the time signature change thingy. change time signature for the sake of changing time signature, heh. though i have to say they have some great songs, but also many more uninspired songs.

ty tabor and king's x on the other hand is damn under rated.
