What is it anyway, A DS-1 with a booster? People here seems to prefer DS-1 over it because of the tone ( I think, after reading some threads). Possible that DS-1 combine with SD-1 can produce the sound of DS-2? Maybe a dumb question but I really don't know.
DS-2 is not a DS-1 with a booster. its a whole different distortion unit by itself.
there are 2 modes to DS-2. mode I is more for rhythm while mode II is more for lead ( very treble- ish ). you can attach a foot switch the change between the 2 modes ( thats what I like about the DS-2 ).
I can safely say that DS-2 is rougher sounding as compared to the DS-1. many people stick to the DS-1 because...
- not many people have the DS-2 ( no recommendations )
- it is cheaper
- it has 3 knobs ( idiot proof )
- it has more modding options
- the Japan version of the DS-2 is hard to find.
- most people believe that Kurt Cobain used a DS-1 to record Smells like teen spirit instead of a DS-2.
personally, I liked the MIJ DS-2 the most. sold mine in the end cos I kinda prefer the MIJ DS-1. sounds smoother but that is just personal preference. if you compare an MIT DS-2 and an MIJ DS-2, there is a whole world of difference. I say the DS-2 is good for heavy rock rhythm playing. its good enough to be a stand alone distortion unit.
DS-1 + SD-1 will not sound like the DS-2 thats for sure.
i heard a MIJ black label DS1. Now i know what all the hype is about that pedal.
its worth the hype. The MIT ones sound really really bad to me and i never heard the MIJ ones. I played shredcows MIJ ds1 now i know, the MIJ ones sound really good same goes to the MIJ SD1s. The MIT ones can just throw away once you hear the Jap ones.
Probably a mix of what you said, and stuff that may not be considered in during this discussion. What is sure is that there is a difference in the various revisions to the DS1 pedal, whether you prefer one over the other is another story.
in terms of MIT and MIJ DS-2, I would say that the MIT seriously lacks balls as compared to the MIJ.
what Thor666 said is right, its a mix of everything. it is a very big topic which has been discussed every now and then. try reading up the bits and pieces. you might learn something.
we cannot generalise Boss pedals by MIT and MIJ. there are some good MIT pedals around like the PN-2 or maybe even the BD-2. hell, even the early MIT DS-1 was good.
as far as I know about DS-1s, the earlier ones are more transparent. as the versions go by, it becomes more and more treble-ish. which in my opinion is a matter of personal preference.
the price for components change over the years. in order for Boss to sell their pedals at their usual comsumer friendly price, they would have to buy thier parts at a lower price in order to make a profit.
however, it would be nice for them to reissue some of their old discontinued pedals .
