Need Help With Cakewalk Sonar

Hi!

I'm a guitarist actually but can also play some keyboards :) I've recently tried to do a little bit of computer music on a shoestring budget. I just bought a secondhand m-audio audiophile 2496 soundcard (this is an older version I think, since the box states Win 95, 98, NT, 2000 or ME as the OS) and I'm using a cheapo Casio keyboard as a controller. I'm running Windows XP Home Edition.

Basically got 2 issues...

1) I just did some MIDI tracks in Cakewalk Sonar (got an evaluation copy so that I can experiment and learn first before I commit to buy) and I want to convert these into audio. But I dunno how to do it.

2) I also would like to record some live guitar (from my Boss GT6) but I can't seem to get a signal from my guitar effects. My guitar effects has a digital out and the soundcard has a S/PDIF in. I used a RCA cable to connect the two but no sound.

<sigh>

Can you guys help me?

Thanks so much for reading! :D

1. Midi has no sound. It has to have a sound source. They are basically signals triggering a sound source. Sound source can be internal (computer) or external (a sound module or keyboard).

Audiophile 2496 does not have build-in sounds. So you're left with getting an external sound module or getting a softsynth. Do you have another soundcard installed in your PC? If you do, you can channel you're midi to that soundcard to give you sounds. But note that using 2 soundcards in one PC at the same time may give conflicts. You can give it a try. The other way, of course, is to connect the midi out from your 2496 to your Casio keyboard (provided it has midi in) - the sound will only be as good as the sound your keyboard produces. For software synths, you may want to consider Edirol HQ Hypercanvas - sound is not excellent but it does have the GM2 template which gives you most of the sounds you need for sequencing at a good price.

2. S/PDIF cannot use RCA cables. You'll need the S/PDIF cable.

1) Evaluation copies or demos usually have certain features that are disabled. For instance, you might not be able to save.

You need to physically record the sounds from the Casio into the software.

2) Try using a 75 ohm cable - the yellow tip cable you use to connect the VCR,X-box, PS2 to the tv will work.

Thanks for the replies guys... here's a follow up:

I'm currently triggering the sounds available in Cakewalk... according to the one of the midi tracks, here's the info:

Input: Delta AP Midi - Omni (This is the Midi input on my Audiophile card, I think)

Output: 2-Cakewalk TTS-1 (I guess this is a soft synth available in Cakewalk?)

So this means I already have a soft synth and I can hear the sound it's producing. How do I convert this to an audio track? Help! :cry:
