NAMM Singapore (?)

Possible to have such a thing in Singapore? Seeing that the music instruments market extends to the region (Indonesia, Malaysia, India etc), having a show here may attract quite a bit of people.

Any thoughts?

Should there be a NAMM in SG, I hope it will be open to the public. iirc, NAMM in the US only allows the press (magazines, websites) in.

That's not true. Many people are able to get into NAMM - who are not journalists or from the media.

China already having their own version of NAMM - each year (at least for the past 2 years). Not sure if they will have it this year due to the Olympics. There's also Musikmesse in Frankfurt.

Of course, if it happens in Singapore, it doesn't have to be associated with NAMM - the organisation itself. It's the concept of a "Music Fair" - large exhibition in EXPO where different manufacturers showcase their products (including the latest stuffs).

Maybe something James could dream about - and eventually SOFT could be the organiser.

the different NAMMs you mentioned are targeted at huge markets.
But we aren't , so i doubt it would be profitable for the merchants to consider coming down here

We aren't? I pretty much had the opposite impression: guitarists, keyboardists, pianists, drummers, and now the fast growing home recording market.

we are growing but not to the level where the businessmen think that its profitable to host such a huge event.

plus not all of us are gonna buy anything there.just walk walk, see see,go home.

I've been thinking too..but I don't see much interest in it. The thing is, we gotta have local "merchants" who are keen on showcasing their products..I don't see that kind of business in this country. However, like Cheez mentioned, it can be a different type of music fair. I'm interested to see how many prominent commercial entities are willing to deploy a similar idea.

If i'm not wrong, there was a "Music Fair" ages ago. It was held at one of the halls in World Trade Center (where VivoCity is now...) My elder brother took lots (i really mean LOTS) of guitar pics. I think it was from Crate (or some amplifier amplifier) booth...

Swee Lee had a booth at the Big Boys Toys exhibition in 2007. They brought out quite a few of the glass room guitars.

along what cheez said, it can be a SOUTHEAST ASIAN guitar fair. held in singapore. that solves your problem of 'small market'

and they can offer all brands, rather than just the dealership that local stores here have a stranglehold on

I think having our own version of the NAMM would be splendid. with not only local brands but overseas brands as well coming in to showcase their products, we'd be able to purchase from a wider spectrum of brands and types. Which will be great, but not so good for the wallets.... *tightens grip on wallet's clasp*

The Fair in China has both manufacturers showcasing their newest products as well as local retailers having a go to sell their stuff. Local retailers are also ordering products from the manufacturers. I believe there were quite a bit of doubling up - but it created some kind of market competition. I believe they got some people from NAMM itself to hold a series of clinic as well.

Actually, I believe the big market may not be Singapore per se. I know, for one, that there are many people from India who comes over to buy instruments in bulk to bring back to resell. A Fair of this nature will certainly attract many from the region, and certainly a plus to the local retailers. I'm quite sure we can draw quite a few people from Taiwan and mainland China as well and maybe Korea, besides Indonesia/Malaysia/India etc. Japan...well, Yamaha is already there.

For the Singaporean market, it may be parents who wants to buy pianos for their children to learn.

Anybody enterprising enough to take it on?

There is such a thing, or at least was.

It was called PALA, I've attended 2 such events here in Singapore.

A massive light, sound and entertainment fair held in Singapore. I remember checking out one off Washburn custom shop pieces complete with hot as hell Washburn girls. A cracked mirror top Paul Stanley guitar and a few of Dimebag's personal guitars too. Also I remember watching a demo by Roland on their computer recording equipment.

To my knowledge the event eventually fizzeled out.

Yup. PALA is Asia's version of NAMM but it does concentrates more on professional A/V and lighting equipment than musical instruments. Usually Swee Lee open up a booth at the event too.

The event didnt fizzled out but just got a new name which is PALME and that it rotates venues yearly. However good news is that this year its gonna be held in SG again on 8 to 10 July 2008 at Suntec City.
