now we all do know that action and all those other stuff affects playability on the guitar.just wondering apart from looking into our guitars to optimize the playability, does nail length and strength being applied on each note affect our speed?

share your views and more ways to increase playability and not looking into our guitars for faults.

there is so much stuff dat u can take into consideration man, just 4get bout it and practise.

Yes, it does affect your playing ability. Due to the natural curvature of your nails, it is essential that you trim your nail in such a way that the curvature of your nails compliment your fingers' vibrato angle arc so as to reduce friction on the fretboard and to sustain an even vibrato effect. Also, the spacing between the base your fingers affect how wide your fingers can stretch when fretting notes. Ideally, they should be at least 2 cm apart, otherwise, you'll have to go through the daily routine stretching or consult your local plastic surgeon for fast but more expensive solution. There are also many more other factors, including length of fingers, base of palm (for palm-muting efficiency), angle of wrist-bending (crucial if you're into those emo-stop-jump-guitar-strung-low kinda style, etc...etc...Hey guys, guitaring is more than a skill...it's an art in itself okay!

dude of course not.but you can see that after hours of playing you can see scratches or cuts on the sides of your nail.so might have had some effect on the playing.

That kind of damage to my nails, which I do have on my strumming hand index finger, makes me want to take care of my nails more than bother about the effect on playing guitar?

wow shredcow you sound like an abhorrent.stop trying to diss ppl off.ppl are looking to upgrade themselves with tips not listen to your smartass bullshit.if you wanna talk have some sense in it and not some naive crap.if you think im asking some rubbish crap then dont bother replying.

heh, imho, dont hantam me

shred actually has some point, but if you are playing purely classical, fingerstyle, flamingo or lotsa hybrid picking/chicken picking kinda stuff, perhaps the nail comes in more relevant and important on the plucking fingers and (maybe) the fretting fingers

most of the time, if we are looking at fretting hand, if finger nail too long, wont it obstruct the action of pressing down the strings?

Too short is ok, coz in my case, my fretting finger nails are pretty short and it doesnt seem to have much effect in sound variation. The more important part, imho, for sound viration, is the flesh at the tip or round the tip of my finger. Applying different pressure, will have difference. It might/might not be obvious if dealing with fretted instrument all the while, but if without the fretwire as pivot point(fretless instrument), in this case, fingers flesh and nails, all play some important role in getting the sound wanted.

as for nails on plucking hand, hehe, i never like the sound preojection of nail against strings. Its lacking in some frequency. Imho, flesh to strings is more useful, most of the time. As for nails, it can creae some nice texture on playing the gutiar, but it wont take over or be missed much if never used

in, my, humblest, nonsesnse, opinion.

On the more serious side, I do agree with Shredcow and PatheinRaindropMoe. This is coming from someone who had been using his index finger nail as a pick for his plucking hand. Although it is faster (and more natural) than using a pick, the tone is not as strong/trebly/nice as compared to using a harder material, such as a pick. More importantly, the nail on my index finger is permanently damaged in the sense that even when new nails grow, the part that's being used has strangely turned translucent and soft, even if I'm not using my nail to play anymore. For these very reasons, I've forced myself to use the pick in the recent years (though my nail's still growing with the same deformation). But of course, at times, I've been lazy and I just pick up my guitar impromptuly and would just strum a little using my nail during those quickie moments

Diss? Geez. Giving opinions have become a bad word, now giving a comment not in line with someone's expectations is = dissing?

Bah.

Look, in the first place, unless you are into a certain style of music like what Pathin mentioned, there are far better alternatives to fingernails. Its almost a no-brainer. Even the "tone benefits" of nails... come on... your fingers are way more expressive than nail or pick.

But. But. I'm interested in nail care. Any recommendations? Maybe I should go for a manicure...

I heard of that back on Jemsite... used it to try to improve the torque on the old Ibanez Edge Arm Assembly... UGH. Didn't work leh. Not tough enuff.

Maybe I shall try again. MAN.

actually dime, you;ve DEFINITELY gotta make yourself clearer. as mentioned, having long nails on your fretting hand does affect your playing in a bad way, more so if your guitar is equpiied with medium frets and not jumbo ones. for me, i try to keep my fretting hand nails as short as possible and leave only the middle and index finger of my picking hand slightly longer for tapping applications.(yes, i varnish the tip of my nail for tapping:lol:)

shredcow dude, dont get a manicure, get a girlfriend who'll do it for free for you!

I always try to keep it as short as possible for both hands..

However, the fortune teller told me that I should not cut nails on Tuesdays and Saturdays.. and these seem to be the days that I want to play guitar or have a jam..

Heh heh..
