Music culture in JCs?

National Radio? Their job is to promote popular music after all. If you want ppl to be immersed into our genres of alternative rock, punk rock, power metal, black metal, indie,.... what do musicians and composers of such genres do? [referring to the local scene especially]

hehe, local musician of those style you mentioned, they study hard, get real job, earn some bucks, buy instrument, play band, write music, self released albums, talk to people, make friends, get contacts, play bands, write music, play shows, work day, earn money, buy sell buy sell instrument, write music, play more shows, make more friends, self release album, make friends, get contacts, play show, work day job.

last thing they will do perhaps, is to dream big big, changing the taste in music of people by putting other form of music down

metal is pretty much mainstream, there's a lot of metalheads around here if you haven't noticed.

hahahaha. metal is being disgraced these days. seriously.
Metal music is not about expressing the inner self anymore. same goes to any other genre. Instead, music is now being brought around as fashion :(

you made me a sad cheena pek, dir bro dir!

isnt it good for u that metal is not well known? So if everyone starts listening to metal, and metal turns mainstream, will u then diss it?

Bro, i dont listen to metal coz a minority of the population listens to it but because i can really connect with the music, lyrics and culture.

So even IF metal does turn mainstream (HOPEFULLY NOT) i will continue listening to it.

All im asking is that metal be more recognized and given more respect or be treated on par with Pop, Rap, RnB etc.

Cheers

music has always been associated with fashion. there'll always be eager mobs ready to pounce on the next fashionable trend in music or whatever. that's not a problem anyway, as long as good music is still around :) let the mobs listen to and follow whatever they want, as long as you get to enjoy what you want!

Yea i have to agree with you on that.... what really matters most is that the band can bring out the meaning and the feeling of any song they are playing. Need not be songs about love though. Can think of other creative themes though....

Okay, dun deviate, back to topic now....

i'm sorry if we are too metal for your tastes!
btw jc sucks, all softies only dream of going to polytechnics! haven't you seen the vast amounts of poly threads around? they have the true underground culture there, with their annual rock gigs and emo chicks!

ok, back to topic!

I apologise for derailment. So now i try to help in getting it back on track!

For a more meaningful and intelligent discussion(as per the 2 threads mentioned the day before yesterday and yesterday)

Perhaps we can try

1) what jc are we in,

2) What are the music listeners like(without putting them down just because their music is different from ours)

3) What kind of effort have we put in, to promote, make friends who are into our music( without putting other form of music, music listeners down)

4) Is there any gathering among JC friends, to not watch porn or talking bout raging hormones but just purely on exchanging music ideas, watch gigs together, share cds, mp3s etc

i start with 1) first

sadly, i fail my england many years back, so never go to jc before. Dont know how it is like. The rest of the question, invalid to me, coz i fail england, so no JC for me

Nah its okay. I like Dream Theater, especially John Petrucci anyway. But what to do now...I did not know that i get that immersed in music till 3 months into my jc life. Too late to switch to poly...nvm...make use of the few opportunities available to prove to ppl from my kind that mainstream rock is not everything....

alamak, why need to prove

Is it like just because i like nasi lemak with plenty of sambal belacan, then i must force my friend around me who like to eat nasi lemak, to eat with extra sambal belacan, coz i like and i think they will like also?

imagine if our pop listening friends try to force pop music to us everyday, that be nightmare siah. I wont like it

And since i dont like it, i must not do that to other people who might not like my music as well, i guess, i think... i....i...

Dream Theater is pretty well-known. They have came down here several times already.

The problem is the music culture in Singapore in general. We're a little xenophobic of anything that isn't available on the local radio or media. With the advent of internet and the proliferation of gadgets and software like ipods and itunes and websites like youtube though, we are collectively slowly warming up to music that is not featured on radio or local magazines. However it will definitely have to take some time to forge a unique and bustling, musically-enriched culture here, with some help from the government perhaps and local media perhaps. The real question is, what are we doing to help improve the scene?

and being a musical elitist in the first place doesn't help!
