ok here are the many factors u shud consider (in no order of importance)!
1. Portability
2. Sound quality
3. Price/value for money
4. Variety & versatility of sounds or if ur looking for a particular sound
5. Live/home use
6. Type of amp u haf
7. Type of music u wanna play
I guess portability, live/home use and value for money are pretty much self explanatory. Multi effects are realli good value for money. Higher ended units such as the pod xtlive, boss gt-8 and vox tonelab se give really decent sounds and a host of effects.. like really really really ALOT! for the price of maybe $500-$800, which is actually the same as buying maybe 3-4 good individual efx. You dunt necessarily haf to buy such a high end unit. Some of the middle ranged brands such as zoom and korg or even behringher are well suited to less affluent musicians. And all these in a small relatively lightweight unit hence the high portability if u wanna tow it along for gigs.
Sound quality tonewise, individual analog efx pedals win hands down. But its digital counterparts come pretty close altho they may haf lost the 'soul' of the efx they are trying to emulate. However they still sound good and tt's all that matters right?
Versatility is where digital multi efx excel at. There is such a great mind boggling no. of different parameters tt can be set it may take a long long time juz to get a particular sound. However once u get the hang of it, they are way more versatile than individual efx. By this i'm referring to the likes of the pod xtlive and the boss gt-8. They both haf functions tt no ordinary analog efx can do. Anyway if u wanna obtain a particular sound then i think analog efx are the way to go coz nth beats the original.
The type of amp u haf matters alot. Coz if u haf a crappy one.. no matter how expensive or good the gear u put thru it is.. it will sound juz tt -- crappy. So dunt bother putting a wide array of analog pedals thru it and overload the amp. This factor is strictly abt the wastage of money. Also the type of music u wanna play also determines the no. of effects u need. Dunt waste money!! no point getting so many efx of lower quality in a multi efx than the few individual efx u actually need which sounds much better.
Most importantly, most multi efx sounds ok, but some of the crucial efx within the unit may not be to ur liking hence wif no other choice u haf to buy a separate individual efx pedal to make up for it. Too much hassle. By starting slow and buying wad u need for individual efx, u'll end up wif ur own personal great set up which is realli very satisfying and comprising of everything u would love :smt045 anything u dunt like later on juz sell them off yea?
SOOOOO... CONGRATULATIONS YOU READ THIS FAR!! 8) haha juz had to say that! boy an essay.. :smt015
