Ah, choices, choices.... again
Any comments guys? Love the vai sound, which is why i am considering the keeley ds-1, but then again, the crunchbox is v highly rated. What do you guys think?

+1 for shred. I once went to the MAN'S house & saw somebody wanted to ask HIM to mod a Keeley DS1!! the guy said that the tone is too thin.

agree with shred.

the keeley one is way overpriced.

although i think that the keeley one is somwhat clearer to a certain extent.

i myself am using a switchblade mod from randolf on my ds1.

my personal opinion, it sounds better than the keeley.

I would also think Keeley one is a bit overrated, but its still better than stock. If you're daring, you can mod yourself, close to Keeley specs on his website. I think the Ultra mod is the best, works better as a boost this way.

But I bet if you can get all three mods in one like some other poster, that's pretty neat too.

to thread starter, read my sig.

and anyway, ive HEARD, that ark's DS1 mod blows the keeley one out of the window, like seriously.

looking for one pedal to nail a particular guitarist's tone is not possible, it can get you remotely in the ball park, but hey, dont shoot out, and especially, a freaking DS1 to nail Steve's tone, cos that aint gonna cut it.

what you really need, is jem555 and a Bogner Uberschall, then will you be set.

Guys thanks for the unconditional plug you guys r dah sweets mates!

The irony about the DS1 is this. You got the Japan/Taiwan made and then there's the SEM,Ultra,AnalogKid,Monte,Switchblade what else......

I was sorting out stuff around the house (or mansion as some prefer to call it...tongue in cheek of course!) going through my old favs among my much treasured vinyl collection the other day and looking at the cover of a particular live album done in mid 80's I just sat back and smiled myself silly. You know sometimes it's just so humbling to witness pure finesse. Almost nobody except for Jeff Beck at least in my opinion can match the expressive and toneful musicality of Gary Moore's live tone of simply using a strat into a stock DS1 into a Marshall stack. Check out the live album called "We Want Moore!"

If paying anything from nothing to more to rediculous for gear that makes u feel that you can play better, please by all means go ahead. To each his or her own ya. Just know that in this modern day and age there's definitely something for everyone. :)

WOO i am 1/3 on the way there! blues sareceno pick ups though.

just joking , its too hard to get VAIs tone , maybe 1/100 there . not something i fancy anyway.but well he has a good tone can't deny.

i agree with embryo. TONE IS IN THE FINGERS.

for blues saraceno tone...

you'll need either the Samick Blues Saraceno model or the Yamaha Plaid model with a fuzz built by his father and some toob amp i think.

I'll get a Samick Icicle and Popsicle if I ever come across one.

didnt davis used to have those samick blues guitar? I recommended one friend to get it back then. But i guess he didnt like it. Haha, it was the one in red burst with shade of pink one..

Hi Randolf,

Ive heard that record too.. And is soo TONE lah!
But I always thought that most of his drive came from the amp? Correct me if wrong.

Yup that's very spot on. It is the Marshall heads' combined saturation of different degrees from the pre and power tube sections driving the 4 x 12 spkr cabs. Gary Moore lik SRV also has ferocious strenght in their hands and also strings his strats with very heavy gauge sets but the way he sounds it's unbelievable. Using heavy dist settings on stomps into a clean amp even if full tube will simply sound fizzy. Even Paul Gilbert had to deal with this problem shifting from the ADA MP1 preamp dist heavy days with Racer X to more classic satuarated head into stack sound in Mr Big and now his solo career where you actually can hear a serious progression in his dynamics probably from a more refined approach in dialling in his satuaration.
