Metal in Singapore's Society...

not really...nowadays we came across funny2 kind of music with effects and electronic sort of,cyberpunk music...newly introduce music and still be accepted by most singaporeans but not metal...Thats is why organisers dont just bring in any thrashmetal band unless they are really sure that their tickets can really sell a lot.Compare to ...michael jackson, britney spears, air supply....can you compare that??you really think heavy metals fans can outnumbered those top 40s,pop,hip hop music fans?think again....

compare ppl going to gigs and clubbing....heheheh..how about girls?how many gals can you find at gig???but if you go clubbing...and pubs, discos,or club in singapore...you know very well the answers. That s not inclusive of ppl who listen to hip hop or discos song but dont club

u want metal to b recognised..to b accepted. then when it is, u say metal is mainstream & it soon becomes the subject of another trend.

there is no light in metal being accepted by the majority. The only reason it is currently recognised is because of Nu Metal & Metalcore.

whats the point of debating this? metal will never be part of the mainstream or "accepted" by the general public at large anywhere in the world...singapore is no different. the fact that some so-called "heavy" videos can occasionally be seen on MTV is already a step forward..about 3 years back they only had a handful of heavy stuff in their library, i checked out of boredom.

still, its a non issue. listen to the music you like and don't worry about other people liking it or not.

Yeah, metal will probably not be accepted by the radio listeners anytime soon. But is it a good or a bad thing?

Firstly... the bad... we can just sit here and sulk that 10 million rappers and pop-stars are invading the airwaves, while the only way we can listen to our fave metal bands is either from CDs, or mp3 players.

Secondly, the good.. obviously we can breathe easy because radio will not wreck these bands. We've seen how radio has wrecked once-good bands such as Green Day. Even Hoobastank was better before "The Reason".

As Lordi said, people are stupid. Before a band becomes famous, ppl who have never bothered about them before won't give a shit. When they become famous, the very same ppl start wearing band shirts or do shit to identify themselves as "fans" of that band.

we live in a world where fairness is scarce..it's not pleasant but we gotta hav the the BALLZ to accept it man...

as for metal, can understand tt ppl find it too heavy n contain harmful messages( some ppl claim they feel uneasy wen they hear the music)...

but i dont understand y jazz is so unappreciated..jazz is awesome man...
it really sucks to see how many of those crappy 'singers'(wonder fi they even deserve to be called tt) who lip-synch at their shows cuz they lack the BALLZ to let ppl hear their voices make it big...

I wonder... we all complain about the audience stiff yadda yadda... granted, its all in the culture of Singaporeans... But.... BUT.

Are the metal bands really good enough? Just wondering.

I mean, you say, jazz ain't happening here, but when I see Jeremy Monterio (sp) play his jazz on the piano, I see an appreciative audience there to see a world class act do his stuff.
Jazz isn't under-appreciated. Way more people will listen to Jazz than metal. :) And metalheads will never say jazz is "commericalised fluff", in fact, most will give a nod to it.

Who cares with what the status quo is listening... Just listen to what you wanna listen and enjoy it.. Cause if you feel that your fav non-mainstream musical act is not deserving its just rights to be played on radio, then just remember that they do still make a decent living out of playing music...

what abt hip hop? through hip hop we can see that drugs, sex, womanising and being gangsta is alrite. girls can dress scantily too.. i dont think sg does anything to stop that. unfair isnt it? damn niggas.

but im quite happy with the metal scene here lah. eventhough the scene isnt big, there are new bands who want to perform. must understand, sg is small.

Wow your knowledge of hip hop is amazing.

To answer shredcow's question whether there are good bands in the metal scene. Have you been to most metal gigs? hmm, if u have, u will see some potential in the bands tho the number is not big. Y the bands are not good enough is simply because they find that it is only for fun, since making money with metal is pretty much impossible in Singapore. Y so? Because they are not given the opportunity to perform in big time gigs. because there are none.

But oh well, i guess the local metal bands who want to make something out of their music, should proceed to offshore opportunities. Singapore is a "I WANT F4!", " OMG ITS NICK CARTER" kind of country...as in majority la..so its pretty much impossible. Maybe nu-metal can make it. Styles like system of a down etc.

And some pretty good comments mentioned in the previous posts.

SOAD is good stuff.. though the latest album ehhhh well... different. I don'tthink of them a nu-metal... nu-metal is kind of... bad lah, insulting. Heh.

Well, panz3rr, at the end of the day, "potential" is nothing without development into that "something".

Making money as a musician in Singapore is a tough job already, much less to hole yourself up as a metal-only musician.

If you notice, even the famous bands, they start out working and having the band as a side line. Then they hit that famous song/record, and manage to do it full time. Otherwise, if they were full time from the start, they struggled financially.

Now, you take that small number of bands, who have made it big after all their struggling or balancing of work/music.... say the number from America. Downsize the number porportionally to Singapore's whole populance... you probably will get a similiar ratio.

Then you add in how big our big time gigs are. How many constituencies are there for the band to conduct a nation wide tour.

At the end of the day, its as you said it, off shore for metal.

But as it is... i don't see/hear any truely outstanding metal acts getting hyped up for the world...
