Manchester United 2008-2009 Season Thread

man u should look to their youth side for a new striker.
imo it doesnt have to be a big name, just playing with scholesy and giggsy would do the lad great, and in turn, make him a better striker.
too bad chris eagles is gone though

Mau U for the back to back to back English Premier League title......If they win again and again, wow that is a long word to spell "back to back to back to back to back to back to...." I hate it when it becomes this complicated

the whole ronaldo episode has left me questioning "where his heart and mind " is/ where his loyalty lies.

kimmi: well, im sure his loyalty is with manutd, for now at least. so much so he is being sued by r.madrid. haha.

well basically Real Madrid managed to somehow unsettle Ronny for a moment there when we though he was on the move to Madrid.

But Fergie's words of wisdom or maybe his hair-dryer treatment changed Ronny's mind.sad to see Eagles move.he was such a huge prospect but maybe the United squad was too clustered with players of the same abilities.

WE NEED A NEW CANTONA FOR GOD SAKE!!

the whole ronaldo episode has left me questioning "where his heart and mind " is/ where his loyalty lies.

i dont understand why he wants to leave.
look at beckham when he moved over... other than the last season which he shined quite abit.. the previous ones were kena sai...
man utd is like the best squad for a 23 year old like him now...
to develop... if its for money im very disapointed..
in fact i was already disapointed when he talked about leaving..

and bout the da silva twins... they gonna be the next brother thingy now after neville brothers =D

i wouldnt mind if henry comes..
if he has the balls to that is.
arsenal fans might hate him forever...
i dont know but i wouldnt mind if henry comes.
HENRY, TEVEZ, ROONEY.
how to defend against siaaa??
behind still got one ronaldo xD

oh yeaa.
btw what do you guys think about the future goalkeeper?

i suppose van der sar only has a couple of years more left.
carson? or who?
name your favourites =D

its a big issue afterall, man utd has always had trouble getting a reliable one after big ol peter..

thinking about the blunders barthez and carroll use to make, damn funny xD

ben foster is a really good custodian,
if you even watch a man utd match, he's been excellent,
the downside is that, he is very injury prone

Anyone saw Soccernet today?

Manchester United are believed to be on the brink of signing Tottenham Hotspur striker Dimitar Berbatov. Spurs have been holding out for a fee in the region of £38million for their star striker, but it is thought they have now reached agreement with the Premier League champions on a £28million deal.

Rest of the article can be found here.

To be perfectly truthful I'm not entirely overwhelmed. Berbatov is a top player and all, but I was holding out for either Huntelaar or Santa Cruz. Both have more bottle and work rate than him. Of course, being a Spurs fan as well, it hurts too. :/

All things said and done, though, he's an excellent addition to the squad. Just imagine: Rooney, Tevez, Ronaldo, Berbatov. How to defend sia??

I smell Treble coming. :D

How to defend? Put Agger and Carragher!

Well, good luck for the next season, opening up that big wallet means opening up the floodgates of criticism wide wide open.

To answer Kimmi's question, his heart and mind is all where ours are.....................in the chest and head. Lolz. But i seriously think he won't be so zealous next season, he might be too distracted about moving to Madrid to continue this kinda form.

Papers: Berba deal close?

Berbatov row leaves United light
Manchester United are determined to complete the signing of Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham Hotspur before the start of the new Barclays Premier League campaign this weekend. Tottenham are understood to be resigned to losing Berbatov, but, having rejected an official bid of £20.5million from United last month, they maintain that they will not sell for less than £30million. Berbatov is determined to move to Old Trafford, having made clear his ambition to play Champions League football. United have been linked with a bid to sign Thierry Henry, the former Arsenal forward, from Barcelona, but the most likely alternative to Berbatov this summer is Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.
Oliver Kay, The Times

The Premier League has opened an inquiry into Tottenham's claims that United tried to unsettle Dimitar Berbatov (Daily Mail). But, the paper says, United remain confident there is no case to answer.

The Mirror believes Sir Alex Ferguson will pursue a second bid for Valencia winger David Silva, despite having a £20million bid turned down. However, The Times says a deal is highly unlikely as sources in Spain suggest the 22-year-old is widely expected to join Barcelona if he does leave Valencia.

Gary Neville thinks United are on for a third consecutive title (The Sun). He says: "When you’ve got players who are able to beat opponents one-on-one like we have throughout our squad, that’s the most intimidating thing."

Ian Wright says he wouldn't blame Thierry Henry for joining United despite his strong Arsenal links.

All the papers pick up on the High Court ruling that former Reds winger Ben Collett be awarded £4.3m compensation after a tackle ended his career.

Papers: Berba on the brink

United close in on Berbatov
Dimitar Berbatov expects to be a Manchester United player within the next 48 hours. The Bulgarian striker has told his Tottenham team-mates that he is on his way to Old Trafford. The £25million deal ends a year-long pursuit of the player by United boss Alex Ferguson. As we reported on Saturday, United were confident the deal would be done by the end of this week. Now the Champions hope to unveil him as their new signing in time to be eligible for their big kick-off against Newcastle on Sunday. Berbatov, 27, feared the deal might be off when reports surfaced of possible United moves for Thierry Henry at Barcelona and Valencia’s David Villa. But Berbatov was always Ferguson’s No1 one target. He has had three bids rejected — last summer, in the New Year and at the end of this season.
Neil Custis, The Sun

Virtually every tabloid and broadsheet says the same, with varying transfer fees quoted, with the Guardian and the Daily Telegraph saying United will pay £28m.

John Terry thinks United "don't have another level to go to" but says Chelsea are ready to step it up a gear this season. "We weren’t too far away from them at the very top of their game," Terry told The Sun. "Rio’s been awesome. Ronaldo’s been unbelievable — I don’t think we’ll ever see that again."

Reds winger Lee Martin will this week join Nottingham Forest on a season-long loan, according to the Daily Mail.

Papers: Record fee required

Spurs set record fee for Berbatov
White Hart Lane chief Daniel Levy was left incandescent by claims from United that they were on the verge of competing a deal for the Bulgarian hitman, before Tottenham had even received a formal offer. Now Spurs will demand a British record fee in excess of the £32million United agreed to complete the full transfer of Carlos Tevez. While Tottenham had put a £30m price tag on Berbatov's head, they had been privately willing to settle for £28m.
Martin Lipton, The Mirror

Reports the Guardian: "The Premier League has decided there is not enough hard evidence to charge Manchester United with making an illegal approach for the Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov."

The paper says Premier League officials are to ask Spurs to supply conclusive proof to corroborate what Spurs chairman Daniel Levy described as "a blatant example of sheer arrogance and interference" on United's part.

The Daily Mail says Tottenham are planning for life without Berbatov with a £17million bid for Russian international Andrei Arshavin.

Newcastle's new signing, Argentina international Jonas Gutierrez, will not be available to play against United because he is yet to be registered with the Premier League, says the Daily Mail.
