KUALA LUMPUR: Laksa, nasi lemak and bak kut teh — these are some of the food Malaysia will lay claim to.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said there were many dishes synonymous with Malaysia’s identity but they had been “hijacked” by other countries.

“We cannot continue to let other countries hijack our food. Chilli crab is Malaysian. Hainanese chicken rice is Malaysian. We have to lay claim to our food,” she told reporters after launching the Malaysia International Gourmet Festival yesterday.

The festival, which runs throughout October, is part of the Fabulous Food 1Malaysia campaign. Novem-ber’s part of the campaign will centre around shopping mall food, while street and heritage food will be the highlight in December.

“In the three months, we will identify certain key dishes (to declare as Malaysian). We have identified laksa ... all types of laksa, nasi lemak and bak kut teh,” she said.

When asked how the ministry would go about labelling the dishes Malaysian after identifying them, Dr Ng said she would reveal her strategy at a later stage.

“That is Part Two. We cannot reveal it yet, but we will let you know soon,” she said.

So in order to claim even just 1 dish, they might have to battle with a few countries.. what's their point anyway? Food is evolutionary afterall.. If an American came visit Singapore, he likes the chicken rice we serve. He could bring e receipe back to America and modify it to accomodate to their taste. That means it's another version of chicken rice.. Japanese adopted curry and now their dishes have curry, do they have to pay royalty to the Indians for that?

The word "hijacked" is just to strong and disturbing to use.

then i think the word mat rempit belongs to spore. coz spore got motorbike gangs since nong nong time back (exclude the current ones who thinks its a gangsta thinghy n made it one)

Laksa is from malaysia, but in malaysia when its created was curry noodle and then evolved in malaysia to laksa as they change the noodle to thick vermicelli, which did not gain popularity then some investors bring the laksa to singapore. hainaniness chicken rice also belong to malaysia, the history is last time when china having war people from hainan fled to refuge in malaysia and they opened stores, budget stores, so they just get chicken and rice and put some soya sauce, then they got it hainan chicken rice. Chilli crab definitely 100% singaporean cuisine.
