Thanks for the comments guys be it good or bad... Appreciate it all anyway and really hope that the local scene will prosper in one way or another.
By the way, I just browse thru' the net and I was amazed of so many gigs that will be going on for the next few weeks right here in Singapore... Skanatics Unite, Morph Fest, Pre-Morph Fest, Punkrock Fest, Xtreme Metal III, Total Metalcore and Music Mania 4 (Maybe thgere are more but I'm not sure)... Quite impressive though and dittos to the organisers and the venue hosts.... I also notriced that Force Vomit and Electrico will be performing for Rock The World held in Malaysia this December...

" Alone isn't enough to stand up and speak it's right.
It's unity that give the strength to fight,
United we stand divided we fall,
May the local scene be the pride for all"
- Well, just some encouragements

interesting.. i don't have much to say on the genres that you listen to, but i encourage you to expand your mind and try listening to other genre's in singapore. check out gigs that are performed by adults, and not teenagers wasting away their parents money cutting EPs and demos that wont get a big break.

nonetheless, cheers to the threadstarter for having a passion in music. =)

We gotta fight for our rights to PARTAY!!!

come to think of it, YES ALOT OF GIGS...but most of it won't get much attention...i tell ye...we need a local radio station(playing local music of all genres!)...podcast or anything...well,its a suggestion..

but thats just an unreacheable wet dream...

There used to be Rock Rip and Roll and A List on 98.7fm that playted local music... Chris Ho used to do so on one of his shows back then too...... but they all got canned

Paul zach the man back then when Zach trax was on 91.3. Till today, i still think his show had good balance between locale music and foreign stuff. Respect to him! Hell, he even mentioned mastodon in life today.

Other than that passion 96.3 had the moring show playing locale stuff and interviewing bands.

Those were good. Boost it had, but what happen in the end?

hehe, lets just do what we have been doing, buy locale cds, eps, attend more gigs instead of trying to find ways to boost it. Its been done and pass over.

CrispyEgg

Thanks for the opinion CrispyEgg... First of all that's where I learn to understand life and the passion in me for that is stronger as I age... But, as I grow older, I want to give myself a more open mind to listen to other genres... Passion-wise I might not like the songs or music but sound-wise, creativity-wise and experience-wise, I open up myself to learn from them. Maybe this is democracy haha... Nonetheless, I admit there are of course better local bands out there that are worth listening to and as I found out, bands like Electrico, Boredphucks now The Suns and many more are few examples of great Lion City very own. I'm proud of that.
Still as I said, my passion will always be of my genre-wise and at the same time, open up my mind, put asides my ego and support the great bands of other genres. No prejudices in me, just pure heart of a music-lover :D

Up The Lions!!!

PatheinRaindropMoe

Maybe one day, a music-lover will arise as a politician and make a new radio station just for local bands that have done their parts in making Singapore proud... For now, let's dream 8)

Ken

Agree with you on that bro... Chris Ho is trying his best to help the local scene... Respect to him though... He even put up some articles of the Skinhead scene here in Life. 1 is about a band, Secret Army, last year and the other is about our latest Lion City compilation 'Oi! The Uprising 2' in Life back in September this year. That's something appreciative from Skinheads' point of views. Skinheads are always label as trouble but like all, not all eggs are rotten... Trust me...

RCT-DisTrO

this one, i also hope, but instead of politician, i wud rather a multi billionaire who have too much money that can rule their own media empire that not only play, showcase locale music(be it band music, mando pop, english pop etc) as a small part of the big biz plan. Afterall, money is most important to start something, not debating in the parliement for years,
another few more years to start, another few years to stable and the rest of the years waiting to fail..

just imho and a close minded one

community radio~!
over here in Australia, there are content laws that decree a radio/television station must play at least 25% Australian content. why? one reason is so that Australians don't become oversaturated with external cultures.

maybe our local content is already bolstered by our chinese and malay singing and acting talents, and really when you think about it, english music is a very small market or audience. it might be growing, but i think we're really one of the minority when it comes to original music.

of course it would be cool to have a radiostation dedicated to music by local talent, and even more alternative programs that play more independent music from other labels like dischord or subpop, or even electronica (although lush 99.5 sort of has that market).. but y'know? the stuff that we wanna hear, be it that obscure metal band from Sweden or the latest underground emo/indie band or the more hardcore drum n bass outfit to hit our shores.

imagine a radiostation that supports gigs, where you can listen to and get gig updates, have competitions run to promote local and alternative music.. it's a cultural goldmine and singapore won't be so stifled anymore!

but baby steps, i like what www.liveisevil.com is doing. and we have our aging youth webzine, and there were a few podcasts in the past that dedicated their playlists to local music. the digital domain is a viable option for us, internet radio and programs anyone?

Maybe its not what you think....

Maybe it isn't the lack of creativity or even the lack of support. One of the other points of view which i would like to offer is the culture of Singapore. Being Singaporeans, most of the people here are really caught up in their work to actually go to concerts. Most of the concerts which they will go to are the really big ones like maybe the Eric Clapton one coming up. Also, being Singaporeans. I guess there is still the mentality that foreign means better and local is not that good.

However, I do agree that the media needs to do something in drumming up local support for local music. Perhaps a version of "Variety Big Brother" (a taiwanese show that is used as a vehicle to promote local and foreign acts) over here could be produced to cater to all the language groups and also bring in acts from around the region. However, the show does need to have its own gags instead of shamelessly borrowing from our taiwanese counterparts.
