Guys, the local scene is NEVER

Hey blank. I do agree with your point that some bands sound like western bands. But look. People like western bands. So the demand is there. I think there is no right or wrong is sounding like them or be creative and come up with something that has never been heard of. It's like being an entrepreneur or just work as a normal employee.
I believe that we should follow our heart. If your passion is music, just play what you like and what you enjoy.
Think of electrico and ronin. I believe they aren't part of the "everything that is going on".
You made a good point that media plays an important role. sigh.

Eh, I dont have a problem if they get influenced by those bands and sound similiar, I dont expect anyone to come up with something completely original.
But you see, the bands that i'm referring to are EXACT replicas of each other, in terms of image, vocal style, music, it all sounds exactly the same.

Furthermore, it isn't even good, this doesn't only happen in Singapore of course, but the thing is there's no way the scene can blossom or whatever with alot of these kind of half-assed bands doing it for the image.
You can tell when someone puts effort into his music.

Hmm..

do you guys know where the problem lies?

Singapore bands and music doesn't have style and flavour there. It doesn't have its own identity. If you listen and guage carefully, almost all the local band sound the same. everyone plays the same thing, same tune. same style. the music revolves around the same beat, same theme.

so u see the problem here? THERE'S NO CREATIVITY!!

yeah..everyone can write lyrics, can compose music, but please loh...except for RONIN, local bands here, especially those that made a name out there one, all sounded so british.

yeah, we used to be under bristish colonial rule, but does that mean our music must be like that jsut because Sir Stamford Raffles, Farqhuar and friends came to our shores before?

well, what i think is local bands must have its own style and definition. its only the way we speak english that differentiates us from foreigners. if we speak like americans or brits, probably when people hear our music, the first thing poping over their head is, "oh..america has a new band..." or "british got a new band!"..

Singapore is a multi-racial society. We speak 4 languages plus many other dialects. like what other people out there says, singapore doesn't have its own form of arts and culture. we copy everything from other countries. music wise too. we are diff from other countries. we shouldn't be distinguished by just our language, but by our culture.

Japanese music, American music, Brit music, have their own identity. once it gets into your ears, you'll be able to recognize, ah..its from where and where.

y must out songs be in English all the time, why can't our music has a blend of everything? imagine, when erhu, sitar and electric guitar plays together? imagine Techno in Malay? Opera in Tamil? all these and more are possible. we have to break all the barrier.

Singaporeans doesn't know one another well, and doesn't each other's race and beliefs well. i believe if we know and understand each other well, we can surely have our own brand of music, and it will sure have its mark in the world and that would really be Uniquely Singapore.

i think Boredphucks has done that. right, although their music is very very vulgar, but aren't the language they used are those the day we speak everyday?

doesn't mean we speak English, our music must sound like English also. if really must sound like English or Americans, den why bother to cut your own album? got Linkin Park, Oasis, Metallica, Coldplay, Celine Dion, Josh Groben, Destiny's Child is enough for us to listen.

ask yourself, the next local band that you are going to listen, are there really "local"?

Well i think Ronin, Electrico & West Grand music sounds very similar la....Only Lunarin's sound is unique....But i guess they are not getting that much exposure here..pity..

quit thinking ronin, electrico n west grand. no doubt, they can play. but there many other local bands who have crazy creativity. like bquartet,x-tech,youthwreck,fatskunks bla bla bla... too many to mention. its only tat they dun have any opportunity or enuf support.

just my honest opinion

one problem with local bands......pride !! 8O

'all wanna be so bloody good know everthing but never do one thing right ...oh with uncomprimised expensive gear that even other rock stars droll over !!'

ok ...since thats out of my system ...

am tired of 'local this and local that' talk .... look at the man in the mirror and see what can be done !!

Firstly... I do not know what the term "underground" means to rock musicians and fans. But for electronic music, typically electronic dance music, the term "underground" means *out of the ordinary* ... and potentially *illegal*

The true spirit of "underground electronic dance music" dates back probably to the 1970s. Disco music was the IN thing at that point, and hence, stuffs like RnB, Hip Hop, Electro has to go "underground". This basically means, a make-shift DJ set-up in a warehouse or whatever premises that could easily be busted by the cops at any time. (It is a very common sight to see DJs turn their back suddenly, and runs out of the backdoor. When you see a DJ do that, it's the signal to run for your life. LOL!)

That's about it ... I'm not going any deeper into anymore history lessons.

Enough oppurtunity for what??? Where is there a lack of oppurtunity here? There are so many gigs these days...MAybe support is lacking.

In Singapore, or in fact in most Asia countries... talent is not enough. You must be marketable. If it is a tedious job to market you, they rather not take you on.

wanna see a dead DJ ...DD ??
