Do our very own countrymen really appreciate and support the local scene? I'm pretty sure that there are many local bands that had released stuffs before no matter what their genres are. I'm more into the 'underground' scene of skins/punks and I had seen bands like Minus, The Bois, The Ruction, Secret Army, SKP, Objection Overrule, Generation 69, Bloody Rejects, Obscene, OAO and Brewing Boots, just to name a few, released stuffs such as album, EP, demo, compilation and LP. Not forgetting the metal and hardcore scene with some great bands like Stompin' Ground, 4 Sides, Impiety and Raspatul, again just to name a few, that had done their fair shares in the 'underground' scene.
What trouble me most is that when come to buying of the stuffs, people here seems a bit choosy, biased and want the stuffs for free except for the true music-lovers. Base on my own researchs and reviews from overseas pen-pals, our very own local bands seem to stand side by side with the Americans and Europeans. Undoubtedly, the music that we portray are kinda good and shall I say, brilliant to some extend.
If the Europeans, Americans and some part of Asians are willing to buy our local stuffs, why can't we support our 'Made In Singapore' releases?

Have your say...

cos our market base is too small.. and being typical Singaporeans.. we always want a good deal (i.e. free stuff or huge discount)

Haha... That might be one of the reason... I shall accept that but I still feel for the bands that had put in their efforts to produce albums or EPs... But a friend of mine told me that kids nowadays don't bother to buy, they prefer download the songs from the internets :D Do support our local music though...

As I said in my thread, I'm more into the skins/punks scene and local-wise, I had almost all of their cds, be it compilation, demo, album, cassettes, EP or LP except Opposition Party's stuffs. So I'm more keen in buying stuffs that come from the scene. For the other genres, I had One Voice compilation, Recover, Stompin Ground, 4 Sides and Raspatul. Lately, I bought Electrico's latest album and the sound is superb. Therefore, I'm interested to know more about other local bands' stuffs from different genres and how their listeners and fans think about their releases. You can't expect a 'techno-maniac' guy buying an Oi or Metal album, right

electronica doesnt necessarily mean techno

and you were just telling us about appreciating different genres

and i'm a "techno-maniac" who listens to metal.

I think we are having more bands these days. But still is very difficult to survive these days by playing band or cutting an album. In America bands can tour pubs after pubs to earn some pocket $$ while waiting for their BIG BREAK. Some or alot actually never got their BREAK even.

Its a very tough journey from where ever you are. To get the big break really needs lots of scrafice. In Singapore where pace and standard of living are so fast most of us can only do music on a part time basis or treat it as a hobby.

Ronin and Electrico are some of the few who keep cheonging for the love of music and performing. 987fm are trying to play more local music which is a good sign. Although I think they can still do alot more. Our mandrain singers are doing quite well in their market. Everybody just have to work harder... we can be what we wanted someday if we want it bad enough.

I really hope see one day we can have lots of local labels and selling lots of albums!!!

What I'm trying to imply is that the kids nowadays who don't appreciate the value and meaning of buying stuffs from local bands. I might put it wrongly in my previous post regarding 'techno-maniac' guy buying Oi or metal album, my apologies. I really appreciate that there are still 'techno-maniacs' out there that truly listen to music from the 'underground' scene. The whole point here is that, local bands here is not regard as high as overseas bands whereas, local bands here are quite top-notch. I might be biased here but I strongly feel that bands from the 'underground' scene here are really getting the recognitions internationally rather than locally. With all due respect to Electrico though. They are brilliant nonetheless...

I think we

When that day comes, the whole of musicians in Singapore will rejoice... No matter who we are or where we come from, we'll look back and feel proud of our local scene... We're getting there though with 'underground' bands, Electrico, Ronin, Bhumiband, Raspatul and Firebrands...

ya but they wont go far because of lack of support, either by audience other than their friends or by the govt, unless they play radio friendly music.

underground scene in singapore still cannot make it, musicwise its so-so but support wise BLAH

Whoaaa bro... Once 'underground' music is aid by the govt, that's gonna spell chaos... 'Underground' music is already beautiful as it is... Do a research though if you are frree and you'll be surprise of the supports by overseas for our local 'underground' bands, no matter what's the genre, as long it is 'underground'... Still, I agree on the part that to have the tremendous support from the audience, they have to play radio-friendly music which I think they don't bother to do it... :D

com'on man.. singaporeans would most probably go like

Anyone: yep thats a good band.. lets show our support.. $15.90 A CD? WAD?
Anyone's friend: wow thats crazy! a blank disc only cost $0.50 max? imagine how much they are earning!
Cd salesman:Hi like to buy our local productions? com'on singaporeans should support our own people!
Anyone: haha yeah but its ok..
Anyone's friend: actually i got it at home already(thats a big lie)

and while we here are crying y no people are supporting local music, thats because in soft we are a small group of musicians that tries to cook rice while talking in forum.Though many may have registered.. how many of them actually frequents? thats another question.. this isnt like a tv media.. our words dun go far in this forum.. so after so much of wailing, its still within us, softies.

i agree with Kerr.. we are indeed showing signs of improvements.. and lets talk less about such things that makes all readers thinks that yes singaporeans really dun support singaporean artist wannabeez.. show results.. not cry abt it.. lets all work hard for a better music industry of singapore! make singapore proud and make those ang mo knows that singapore IS NOT part of china! and in fact we are better than that big continent! ( <-- lol this line u must watch who's line is it anyway to understand..)

Guys, the local scene is NEVER going to be anything more than underground because all the bands are just imitations of western bands, and by imitation, I mean they sound like cover bands(most).

Honestly, everything that is going on with the "core/emo"(hardcore,screamo,grindcore,deathcore,thiscore,thatcore) is in MY opinion, very unoriginal, and just fuels the entire "scene" people, like goths, punk-rockers, and what not. Who honestly, are just at gigs to look cool and "express their individuality" by looking exactly the same.

For the scene to blossom and become much better you need dedicated bands who are willing to play good, remotely original music and people who are willing to support these bands.
Also, you need energetic bands, who wants to see bands who just stand there like goddamn stone figurines, no matter how talented they are, they will come across as boring.

Furthermore, bands who are willing to support each other(go to each other's gigs, buy each other's cd's, etc) are definitely needed.

And finally, if the scene is ever going to "blossom", it NEEDS the help of the media - Radio, TV, newspaper, etc , which unfortunately may happen after the next ice age.

But of course, this is just my lowly opinion, I dont support the local scene at all at the moment due to my studies, so yeah, I'm part of the problem now.

Hey blank. I do agree with your point that some bands sound like western bands. But look. People like western bands. So the demand is there. I think there is no right or wrong is sounding like them or be creative and come up with something that has never been heard of. It's like being an entrepreneur or just work as a normal employee.
I believe that we should follow our heart. If your passion is music, just play what you like and what you enjoy.
Think of electrico and ronin. I believe they aren't part of the "everything that is going on".
You made a good point that media plays an important role. sigh.

Each has their own opinions about this and for that, I'll respect that :D . Kinda strange though that people have the mindset that western bands are the biggest influence. For me, it's a yes and no as although history might favour them but as years went by, music progress and people make music of their own which come to a point of a saying that Music Is Universal. And yeah, the media plays an important role but media can be biased and propogandic. I agree with Grey that people will become choosy once they get to know that a local productions/bands' cd might cost SGD15.90 but to think of it, overseas cds are sold at a very hefty price eg. The Ruction's cd is sold at SGD14-15 here whereas in Europe it'll cost you 12.50 Euro = SGD25!!! I hope you'll understand the whole point here
