local music vs. foreign music

maybe we should invite Coco Lee, Sun Ho and Wang Lee Hom to share with us about their attempts to break into the North American market yeah.

And not forgetting James Iha, the dude who sang Sukiyaki and Ultraman.

Well she is the only one singing, the others are just babbling incoherently.

International Artistes Who Did Very Well

Once again and again, It has got nothing to do with Nationality, Culture, Language, Country's Local Accents or... Singlish but because they believed in themselves and did original compositions which they were comfortable and where their strengths were.

Dick Lee had proven that by being successful in Japan with his original compositions with Singlish all over half of his songs...and a Singaporean accent.

I think 'Mustapha' by Dick & Ja is one of the best compositions I had ever heard from a local artiste/s.

Marina Xavier's 'Made In India' did very well in Europe as a dance single.

Max Surin & Tokyo Square 's original composition 'Within You'll Remain' did very well locally by mixing Mandarin chants in the background other than the main English language medium.

Japanese duo Frank Chickens supported Frankie Goes To Hollywood in their tours back in the 80's with We Are Ninjas (Not Geishas).

Yoko Ono had impressed a niche following when she released her album 'Rising' and it was her haunting and unique vocals she carried with her with John Lennon (Husband) with The Plastic Ono Band.

And irregardless of your nationality...or accent or culture....you are still able to attract your personal niche crowd following anywhere in the world.

The late Ofra Haza from Israel with her I'M Nin Alu that climbed the European charts be it British Charts, etc.

Sisters Of Mercy Collaborated With the late Ofra Haza in 'Temple Of Love'

India's Bally Sagoo based in London who had done very well all over Europe since his Bollywood album that featured songs like Choli Ke Peeche & Chura Liya. And his brilliant remix of Gur Naal Ishq Mitha.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan who had been featured in many Hollywood movies be it Natural Born Killers or Dead Man Walking.

Eddy Vedder (Pearl Jam) and the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan 'The Long Road' or Peter Gabriel & Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan for 'Taboo.'

Peter Gabriel & Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan 'Signal To Noise'

French lady Desireless and her 'Voyage Voyage'

Germany's Nena and 99 Luft Balloons

Late Austrian Falco with Rock Me Amadeus, Vienna Calling, The Sound Of Muzik, etc.

Germany's Camouflage who did well with first single 'The Great Commandment.'

Sweden's Abba who won the 1974 Eurovision song competition with the song 'Waterloo' and their stardom took off from there with the superb writing skills of Abba members Bjorn & Benny.

Austria's The Vienna Boys Choir

Men At Work and their signature tune abt their native homeland Australia with 'Down Under.'

Australia's Rolf Harris with His famous 'Tie Me Kangaroo Down Spot.'

India's Asha Boshle who sang vocals for Boy George's 'Bow Down Mister.'

Japan's Ryuichi Sakamoto formed the internationally successful Japanese synth techno trio Yellow Magic Orchestra, with Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi. The band charted a British top 20 hit with "Firecracker" in the late 1970s (along with other favorites "Technopolis" and "Behind the Mask"), and was a seminal influence on the acid house and techno movements of the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Ryuichi had collaborated and experimented music with David Byrne (Talking Heads), Iggy Pop, David Sylvian (Japan), Youssou N'Dour, etc.

Senegalese Youssou N'Dour had collaborated with singer, composers and musicians be it Neneh Cherry with 7 Seconds, Peter Gabriel with Shaking The Tree, etc.

Algerian Cheb Mami collaborated with Sting for Desert Rose.

And the list goes on and on and on......

So it ain't about your nationality, culture, language, accent or .....Singlish.

They believed in themselves and did original compositions which they were comfortable and where their strengths were.

Abt Movies

And in America's IFC channel...other than the English medium movies...you have lots of current Indie Asian movies be it from China, Pakistan, India, Japan, older Japanese shogun movies starring Sonny Chiba, Akira Kurosawa movies, Bruce Lee movies, Jackie Chan movies, etc.

Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill 1 & 2 production has a crew production cast from all over be it China, Japan, Mexico, etc.

And Quentin Tarantino was inspired by our very own Singapore movie (B Grade Category) called Cleopatra Wong ( Starring Singapore's Doris Young aka Marrie Lee).

It May Be The Other Way Around....

It May Be The Other Way Around Actually...When A Record Company Or A & R Manager Really Believes In Your Music And Direction/Agenda...They May Be The Ones Approaching You Instead.

But Whether The Record Company or A & R Manager Impresses You Is Another Question Which You Have To Be Honest With Yourself & Decide If You Should Bother Liasing With Them or Hearing Them Out.

Patience Is A Virtue And Sometimes One's Music Evolves & Gets More Progressive During The Different Stages Of Your Life.

Your Priority Differs And Matures As You Gain Experiences & Exposure in Living Everyday.

My Personal Motto As Advised By A Senior Musician & Mixer : Is The Music You Are Making & Creating Something You Feel Proud Singing On Stage Twenty Years Or So From Now?

And That Statement From My Senior Advisor Helped A Big Big Big Big Big Deal And It Left A Deep Deep Deep Deep Deep Impact On Me Till This Day.

many different form of writing, like many different people in life.

Extract the good part, throw out the lousy part, improved on the good part and make it own words that reflect life and one self

but then, along the way, self reflection is equally as important, whether are we living in our own world and believing too much in ourself or that this planet is not suitable for us and thus shall move on to other planet and be closer to alien, aka higher beings

Well...Perhaps we should not just look at just Asia or Singapore but the rest of the World which exist.

I always felt and still do that A & R Managers for Asian Record Companies have a pathetic small scoped mindset whereby they do not think that any English Language music can sell from Asian singers/composers/songwriters...but ain't English the universal language all around the world?
Isn't English medium the largest pie in the world's market irregardless of the genre?

Bro Embryo Bro Has Mentioned To Me Before: The J-rockers Have Perfected Rock'n'roll But Still Unable To Sell The Craft Back To The Americans. Why?

Skin Colour Lah. What Else?

Yes, "God Loves His Children (Yeah)" - I <3 You, Thom!

But His Children Don't Love Each Other So Much...
