let's talk about Dream Theater's Octavarium!!

Octavarium was a pretty radical departure from their style since train of thought. It's leaning more towards the Nu-Metal camp, e.g. These Walls, the first song that came to mind when I heard the initial riff was Linkin Park's "From The Inside". I'm sincerely hoping this album just an experiment, and is not going to be the shape of DT's future to come...

+1

octavarium is interesting though..as the genre is broaden up besides just prog rock or prog metal..

anyway..about those secrets about the album.. i think that it's a little irrelevant with the topic.. cuz we're talking about the muscality of Octavarium.. not the artistry of the album's cover (although those secrets are really cool :D .... the ascending keys and all that..)

i'm sure dream theater is much more capable of doing more technical music rather than blast the distortion in the album..
like the song The Dance of Eternity.. that's one popular odd timing song.
but i noticed that in dream theater's newer albums [train of thought] and [octavarium], the time signature of most of the riffs are kinda similar.

for example.. in [these walls] in octavarium..the verses are like 3 bars of 5/8 timing then a 6/8 bar to end off a phrase.. just an example.. yea.. the technicality is closely related. but the

My fav

Well!

What can i say....Dreamtheater song is itself a masterpiece that will not be easily forgotten..

Whatever album they produce is absolutely superb.!

Metalizer u hav my vote bro!

when I first heard it, I don't like it. They sound like a lot of other bands. But then I think back, hey, I like Muse, I like Linkirn Park, so why should these songs that sound similar be not nice? I mean, when I listen to both of those bands, how I wish there were more individual technicality. Songs are nice but there aren't much to appreciate technically, except maybe vocals. So here, songs like Never Enough which is obviously Muse influence, which I like and it is technically damn hard! Anyone who plays bass here, please try the intro and see how fast that is. Hysteria is nothing compared to Never Enough. And the solo, do you know how fast Petrucci played? And you call that not shredding? you must be crazy. On top of that, it is not just wanking the strings, it is melodically beautiful!

So I have to say Octavarium is good album. My fav is still Awake but this album is still good. Train Of Thought brought new fans because it is heavy but seriously, in terms of musical creativity, TOT is very linear and Petrucci shredding even though crazy and super fast, it is less melodic.

DT has done everything, you name it. Octavarium from how I see it is like coming back to roots. Composing songs from their wide influence (fyi Muse's Absolution is Portnoys No 1 album for 2004) so they are like paying homage while still showing show their technical prowess.

Hey azachamis why don't you post the bass intro of Hysteria from Muse that u have played & recorded for us to listen to? Come on man.. I'm sure alot of us would want to hear that, esp for Muse lovers & all other bass players. GIVE IT TO US BABY...
