personally i feel that Octavarium is a very disappointing album..

i think this thread has been posted before.. but i couldn't find the old one..
but anyway..i'll start this new thread again

ya anyway.. dream theater fans.. got anything to say about it?
i AM a HUGE fan of dream theater..but the style has changed tremendously from Train of thought to Octavarium...even in train of thought, the style was already "evolving". but octavarium...is just so..different..
i dunno..maybe i have to learn to like it..learn to appreciate it..but i don't know why i can't at the moment. unlike other dream theater albums where i immediately enjoy the songs..

people people.. your thoughts?

Well.. heard it, love it but its very strange though.. The first few bars of the first song was like 4/4 all the way and i was like 8O ...

Sure or not!!

But after a few takes, it started to get in U..

Okie la

Octavarium is quite a turn in Dream Theater's music cuz it's very different from all their previous albums. All the new songs sounded as tho it has changed genre or something (as in not here nor there). I don't find this album disappointing at all.

PS: Octavrium is a kewl 24min song.

Hee

I prefer the older album whr they feasture "Streams of Consciousness" as well as 1 off song from John Petrucci's solo album - "Damage Control."

"Octavarium" is nonetheless kewl!!

i dont think its that good really.. a few songs sound like something off a linkin park album..cept obviously a lot more technical. i personally dont really like it, it sounds really weird. i realy like train of thought, its probably the most "metal" album they have released. but hey, dream theater is a band that likes to experiment with stuff and they have created a sound that you is instantly recognisable.

yea train of thought is very metal...but i like that kind..

but octavarium seems to shift into a new kind of metal...which sounds really weird when they play it...

and ya..
"these walls" is really linkin parkish.. i agreeee!!

Nu-metal??

Dats wat the term Prog-Rock is abt.. Its never never stagnant... It keeps changing. Get wat i mean?

Try to listen to those prog-rock bands bfore DT. YES, Rush, etc.. U'll know wat I mean.

i think james labrie's solo album is a little better but that too sounds a lot like linkin park. what happened to those goons anyway? they've been phased out i hope.

yeah but i think what hes trying to say is that it doesnt sound like dream theater. they created this distinct sound that when heard u can instantly tell its them. but when i heard octavarium for the 1st time, it was definitely. i took my a while to realise that it was portnoy on the drums and that it was dream theater. oh but of cos, with james labrie's girly vocals, u can tell that its dream theater. im probably gonna get killed for saying this but i think that dream theater is a great band and im a big fan, ive got all their albums and all but they really really need a better vocalist. someone like bruce dickinson or even ozzy with a stronger voice.

I think Labrie's singing on octavarium was very good.

hes good on the ballads like the answer lies within and other ballads but for the faster songs i think his vocals seem to falter and its like hes struggling to reach the note or somthing. i dunno, maybe its just me.

ya, especially when he's singing live....

Octavarium was a pretty radical departure from their style since train of thought. It's leaning more towards the Nu-Metal camp, e.g. These Walls, the first song that came to mind when I heard the initial riff was Linkin Park's "From The Inside". I'm sincerely hoping this album just an experiment, and is not going to be the shape of DT's future to come...

well give me [images and words] and [when dream and day unite] anyday. no offence to dt but i guess their style is going beyond my liking.

I got Octavarium when I saw them in Irvine on Gigantour...Its signed by the band!! :D Oh and I love the album...Panic Attack is great!
