let's talk about Dream Theater's Octavarium!!

on answer lies within.. i was waiting and waiting for a nice solo to come.. bahh.. I do like the track Octavarium though, and also.. I swear I Walk Beside You sounds like its done by U2..

Octavarium is damn cool. It has a slight hint of muse in the song panic attack and never enough, which makes it cooler!! Octavarium is damn epic and The root of all evil is cool and heavy. I love the album man...

well give me [images and words] and [when dream and day unite] anyday. no offence to dt but i guess their style is going beyond my liking.

+1 dude. SFAM is inside the top 3 for me together with IAW and WDADU......dunno what's their direction now as it's their last album with the label. Latest i heard was An Evening With....Part 2

yeah now the technicality by no doubt has reached a new stage. but i cant say the same for the song writing. i guess i like all the albums that came before 6 degrees.

Octavarium has almost everything in it..Linkin Park,Muse,Uriah Heep, Pantera, U2 & so on. In this album they r making it more simpler for listeners to catch their tunes. Almost all the songs have 4/4 timings. Easier for them to play also. I guess they feel that they r 2 old to have the same kind of pressure that they had from their recent albums. But no matter what they play, I'll still consider them as 1 of the best prog rock bands in the world. How i wish that I can sleep in a S'pore theater and dream that I'm watching them playing live right infront of my eyes. So guys do you want them to play it here? let's hear your vote!!!

Yeah man ye said it. My vote's on n probably alot more.

Personally I find the album to be one of their best yet and this is why...

First off ignore what the album sounds like and just look at the CD inlay of the album. Yes dont even play the CD. Study it and try to figure out the symbolisms found in the inlay. The "magical" numbers that can be found throughout the album is quite cleaver of DT I must say. I wont try to explain more just try to figure out for yourselfs first.. Its quite facinating once u see all the symbolisms and the meaning...

Secondly now play the CD and hear it from start to end. Those quick enough would be able to realise that the first chord(which is an F) on the piano of the first song is actually the continuation of last chord of For The Name of God in Train of Thought... And to those with musically trained ears would also realise that the song keys on the album is running on the ascending order to make an Octave(F G A B C D E F). Next off is the many small nuggets in each of the small songs before the masterpiece itself which is Octavarium. Octavarium the song itself is wonderful as its fuses all the many diff influences that DT might have in the yrs and make it to one song. The lyrics in the whole album are quite clever as well, esp Octavarium..

Thirdly one has to repeat the first and second steps to realise more and more things abt Octavarium and I believe they will appreciate it more once they do it. I know I did...

I love this album... Keep it up DT...

Thanks 4 your vote Anubitsh. Kind of hoping that they can have a live concert here in S'pore. Worth spending my money on them no matter how much it cost rather than going to US but don't hv the chance to see them.

Itz nt only my vote. There r lotsa ppl here wanting the same thing. They tried petition for Iron Maiden..failed. Then Megadeth. Failed. I think Dream Theater didn't get a go yet. Or did it

Well let us pray 2gether 4 DT to get into action here. I don't know bout the procedure but I guess National Arts Council is the 1 responsible to give or not to give them a green light... or their cost is too expensive.

Alot of factors need to b accounted for i guess. Too many restrictions, rules & regulations. And the nation's crowd ain't big like Malaysia, thtz y u get Kreator in msia or indo. Sg is right in the way n they miss it just like tht? Ha ha. Cracks me up. Or mayb they think China means Singapore, quoting the Slipknot tour dates incident.

I'm so sad that some Bodies still think that ROCK is always related to drugs & violence. I'm a rocker myself but I don't do drugs & I can stand sittin for hours in a concert without damaging any private properties or get into rowdy acts. Juz look at Japs concert goers. They r so well disciplined & we can be juz like them.

other than the rules and regulations by authorities, i guess there's the corporate side of things. Labels bringing acts over to perform here have to look at costs of logistics and manpower, eg. portnoy's setup compared to let's say blink 182 drummer's setup....that's alot of difference

Ppl want cheap tickets but good bands warrants a higher paycheck ie. higher ticket prices then ppl start to complain and not go....so no money earn might as well not don't do it. That's my assumption of why big bands aren't performing here?

Well It's true edo83. I agree with watever u hv juz said. That time when I went for Myung bass clinic, one of the questions thrown to him was bout this matter. His answer was "too many factors to consider." Hey man I think we hv gone way out from the prime subject. So hv u listen to Octavarium?? :smt064'

Yeah i was at myung's clinic too. Listened to Octavarium already, i'm still a big fan of the early DT era though....still keeping my fingers crossed another release which will appease my craving for the good ol' DT style, nothing bad about the new album but not much that appeals to me either. I just don't know why...but till now it's only been about 5 full runthrough of all the tracks maybe it'll take some time for some tracks to appeal to me

octavarium

In my humble opinion, I think Octavarium is indeed deifferent when compared to the prev albums, but we are in no way shortchanged though..

I find it a highly mature outing, having listened to DT since its early inception. Elements of Prog are everywhere, I find it sometimes easy though grossly inaccurate to assume that prog means Odd time signatures, Blitzkrieg of musical passages.

In the words of Rick Wakeman: Prog is about breaking the rules, but u must first know what the rules are..

DT knows pretty much a more than substantial amt of rules i bet for being able to come up with this album. Rudess's use of the continuum is a hmm almost revolutionary.

When i first heard of Octavarium, the titile track, tot it was very shine on you crazy diamond-eque, then the flute passages reminded me of YES, some might say its rip-off, I think its a clever way to pay homage to their inspirations in a tasteful yet delightful manner. ( but then its just my opnion really)

well.. to each his own. But I luv the album. Very Much Indeed.

The biggest complain so far on this album is the lack of guitar solos and I have to agree though -- coming from me who doesn't really care about guitar solos. It could use a little bit of shredding by Mr. Petrucci. Overall I think this album is a lot more varied in style compared to Train Of Thought. But I still think within Dream Theater's standards, this album could've been a lot better . It feels like they're just going through the motions. For me, Awake and Scenes From A Memory are their best works.
