Jamming CCA in Poly - what do you guys do?

Come to think of it, being in an organisation related to music/band (and usually not making it) isn't as cool as being the rebel band from nowhere and making it... =)

I heard from a friend that Ngee Ann Kongsi cannot donate so much anymore, cause government says so.. Ourspace@72 rocks though.. but always alot of people.. maybe can hold gigs there!! :D

dont know if that's accurate. i think it's bullcrap though.

OurSpace@72 is pretty cool, and yes always so flippin' packed.

the only feasible place for gigging is the atrium, but it's so god damn hot there.

yah thats what i realised about NP... no real place to hold gigs. the acoustics at the atrium isn't that great. ive enquired about holding a gig and the best place they suggested was LT 26, the cultural theatre... which isn't that conducive.

haha OurSpace should have a jamming studio there. there's so much open space left unused.

NP Jamming

Hey guys! I heard all this commotion about having a jamming place in NP and hope i can give you an insight during my jamming days in NP.

When i was in NP, (Graduated in 2004) the band scene was quite ok and cca's like SCC was actually quite cool. Not much of the mando pop! heheh.. infact it had all genres! Some of the powerhouse bands you see today actually came from SCC, there was RIDGE! (POWERJAM RUNNER UP) Audio breakout (School of rock runner up) and musicians like jonathan saiman, simon lai, andrew drums , sultan ( dunnoe wether you guys heard of them coz i read some threads here about them).

Anyways, i guess as time goes by, the ideaology change according to the different cca heads that were running them.

I was actually part of Ngee Ann poly concert band and man! that was boring! but we formed ngee ann combo band which later was a common ground for NP musicians to come and jam, which also sparked off a couple of gigs in school. the combo band ALMOST became a seperate cca on its own! coz the school was asking the combo band for performance rather than the concert band! hahaha

So i guess the only way is to really prove yourself in NP and if support is there, i bet a new jamming cca will emerge. Take for example, baracuda batucada frm NP, i think they are a seperate cca now. they use to be frm the concert band. they got soo famous that the school decided to fund them and i think they are on their own rite now.

Sorry to say guys, this is how it works in np. its all about proving yourself, they are quite fussy about spending money.

niways, i would like to thank NP for giving the chance to me because it was during the jamming years in poly that gave birth to many fellow musicians that are close to my heart-
ruel- zero sequence
jason-withered tree
brendon-withered tree
fauzi-orkestra melayu singapura
simon- ridge
justin-sould out
gerald-sould out/jiveoholics
andrew-audio breakout
sultan-ridge
mathilda-sould out/singapore idol
suhaily-sould out
fadz-halfestride
matin-baracuda/halfestride
roman-firebrands
ross-bec and ross
I LOVE YOU GUYS!!
if you guys need a place to jam, you can come down to my studio too!!!
Music Garage guys!!!!!

Somewhat inspiring :X

Now what we gotta do I think, is to find out about bands in ngee ann, and just hold this gig in the atrium out of nowhere, shatter all the library glass, confirm will get attention!

i've actually spoken to the lecturer in charge of the interest groups of business school... its possible to set it up but funding is very very little. something like a budget of $100 each time you wanna hold an event.

any ideas how additional funds can be raised?

Wasn't there some kinda gig or something during the recent open house at NP? I was sure I saw a Tech21 Trademark 30 or something...

I think it had something to do with SPCA, but halfway during a song the band was told to stop. KNNBCCB*#&$*#*&($#!!!

$100 dollars is actually pretty okay what. Better than no funding..

Venue cost = free @ ngee ann?
Equipment = Hmm, borrow from school? SCC? Bring our own guitars and stuff.

And the 100 bucks? Maybe can buy beer, which will help attract people to the gig, making it a huge success. Kidding la.. ah dui.

f*ck sia......... can go rent smaller amps la. I don't know. Would love to see some shit happen in Ngee Ann. :) SOMEBODY HELP!!! We need a leader!

What you need is actually someone who has POWER in the school. A place to start is the student Union at the blk 72 above canteen one.

You can talk to them in organising a gig to raise funds for the school or something. Or ask them to organise a band competition. From there, the necessary logistics, like band equipment, booking of lecture hall or other venues, printing of flyer will be from them and also getting funds from the SDAR!

Maybe talk to the chairman and see how it goes.... its worth a try.

Scc woulndt lend their equipment and neither would concert band unless its to another cca or their own. Not sure wether SDAR still keeps some amps.

If im not wrong... student union use to organise events like OH LA LA Band Competition, Np Funfair gig, and through them maybe you can get to perform for Open House or freshmen orientation.. or event graduation ceremony

Hope this helps

haha yeah ngee ann mcm-ers are a coool bunch. considering i almost went there and i know quite a large bunch of them. chose tp over np tho cos the mediabiz studios there are newer, more up to date and the course has a smaller/more specialised cohort. Still, i think ngee ann is awesome....considering bands like ridge were from there.....only complaint i hear most of the time are the sucky pa systems and monitors at gigs tho....courtesy of a certain friend known as mr twohill......heh.

Musicians in NP... Fall in!

Hey guys,

Had to dig up this thread to avoid starting a similar thread. haha. Anyway my friends and I are in the midst of setting up a Jamming Interest Group in NP. Proposal is sent in and pending approval :D. Although sadly it would be open to only the students of BA to register as members once its approved, but those out there who aren't from BA, I guarantee you you will be kept in the loop with regards to the activities we would be holding. The events that would be held will be open those outside of BA.

Coming to the main jist of the message, we need to keep a register of musicians in NP itself so would you guys please leave your email address as well as the School you are in over in this thread? Otherwise, you can also PM me your details.

Thanks alot!

Wow.. nowadays poly students are damn lucky, even have their own jamming rooms in campus. When i was in SP (1992), we had to go to Seng Chai Jurong East to jam.

You knwo what would actually be a great way to improve the scene itself? Since you're from BA, you should really get those Marketing students up and teach bands who join the CCA on how to market their music.

It's practice for the students and they can also apply what they learn while enjoying it. True? Besides, you'll have the whole school to help you with it. FUnds, lecturers, more experienced people.

It's student development. In and out of school.
