Jammin Studio - Minimum Standards

For my home studio(if I ever start one),I'd like to keep it low key and low costs.

1.Marshall 15W MG15CDR
2.Vox 15W bass amp
3.Casio keyboard
4.Yamaha drumset
5.Aircon
6.Mini fridge
7.Internet access
8.Furniture(Sofa,chair,table)
9.Proper lighting
10. PA system(smarvo?)

This is my estimate, actually more like a guess.

Drumset - $1500
PA - $1000
Bass Amp - $600
Guitar Amp - $600
Guitar Amp - $400
Keyboard Amp - $600

Bass Guitar - $300
E Guitar - $300
E Guitar - $300
Keyboard - $1200
Keyboard - $1000

Total = $7800

Reason why i kept the budget for guitar low is because guitarist usually like to use their own guitar instead.

Soft, I think your budget for guitar amps on the low side or for extremely small non-branded amps. A decent Guitar amp costs quite a bit these days lah (at least 1k). And not even talking abt stacked amps.

Theres also other costs like music stand, mics, mic stands & dont forget cymbals & double pedals (impt for metal bands). However no need to buy 2 keyboards cos most bands have only one keyboardist =)

Do the "Semi-Sound-Proofing" of the room go into the expenses too?

I dont think so. I did try asking a contractor how much to soundproof a small room in my house, He quoted $15,000. *FAINTS* To put up partitions and do soundproofing will be more expensp. Most studios dont even have proper soundproofing liao.

Having spent so much on one Jamming Studio Room, excluding sound proofing and other hidden costs like rental, Aircon, PUB charges..How long it would take to recover the costs back. When all willing to afford S$15 an hour, It would take minimum 6 months to cash back the investment.. :?:

6Months is too optimistic.

If you don't include salary of the studio caretaker (no-life working hours 2pm-11pm, 7days a week include hol), which at least looking at $1500 per month salary.
The place rental $1500-3000 per month.
PUB + Util $300 per month.
Equipment upkeeping and replacement approx $200 per month.
So your overhead is about $3500-5000 per month. Hahahaha........
You need to earn at least $150-200 per day to break even. Let alone recover equipment and renovation setup cost .... hahahaha.......
Then the boss no need to make any profit meh???

Most of us studio operators who are actually surviving have other means of generating income. Cannot depend on studio only. Sure die one.

wow my hats off to all operators who work so hard to provide jamming studios for us even tho they dont make so much out of it.

hey mikemann, got any suggestion for the budget that i have listed above?

we try to find the best value for the buck solution can?

James & Mike,

It is possible to provide a Jamming Studio with all requirements of the customer, if they are willing to pay 20 ~ 30 bucks an hour. as Mike said in his previous post..But none of the customer is generous enough to pay that. All still looking for 8 bucks an hour kind of stuff..

If the customers cannot support Jamming Studio owners, how there is a room for improvement or providing facilities..??

If u go to a jamming studio, Not all the groups do perfect practice..Some experts, some mid level and most of them are beginners..They learn how to use the gear at Jamming studios only not on their own units..!!! It's true.. So if some thing goes wrong, people like Mikeman...who know how to fix things..have to do so...In this case, customer must be prepared to pay a reasonable price for the hourly rental and can ask for things...

However, James, Your quote seems to be alright considering the mid quality equipments...

Hi james,

You mean about $7000 for one room equipment?? Sure no problem, can be done.

If you are talking about new equipments, then the range of equipment will not be of high quality stuffs, but with proper selection (my experience will be used here), you can still setup a studio with quite good sound.

If you don't mind used equipments, then some of the stuffs can be of quite good quality. But bear in mind, they are used, so the lastability is a question. But if the lobang is good, you can setup quite a good studio.

One thing I am sure of is that you will surely want a proper keyboard setup, am I rite??? heeheehee.......
So down there already spend about 1/3 - 1/2 the budget already (eg. Korg SP200 digital piano + Triton le keyboard + stand + keyboard amp)

It's one or the other. I do have some lobang stuff currently. Is this in the project with the heartrock center???? You guys never invite me to be part of it ah??? sob.......sob....

Hi Hans,

It's quite simple really. The thing is that the local jamming market DO NOT allow for the kind of expansion that you are talking about. Basically there is NO MARKET for it. People are not willing to pay for that kind of quality....that's reality.

If there is market, sure to have someone to open boutique style jamming studios already. May even have food and breverage service in the studios.

We put a simple case study, why is K-BOX karoke have such good atmosphere and reasonable price???? Precisely because there is enough market for them to do so. Karoke is something practically every one who can croak out a note can patronise.

But jamming wise, it's simple, in a school, maybe there is only 1 or 2 bands out of the whole level (eg sec 4). After school, the number of band in proportion to the population is less than a few percent.

So you see, it's all about economics. Supply & Demand.

Haha..... Actually studios in SG have their own theme and their own group of customers.

Some cater to the general music kind, so have almost everything, but normally will not allow hardcore or metal in their studios. The equipments also tailor not to suit real heavy stuffs. Needless say, their equipment cost quite a bundle.

Others specially suit to metal or hardcore stuffs, layout is more spartan and easy to maintain. Also easy to single out any broken stuff so as to charge the offending band.

The most spartan kind will have cheap and easily replaceable equipments to cater to the underground or younger customers, who does the most damage. The operators also act as the bouncer, weeding out trouble makers.

Actually if I go crazy and open a "Boutique Styled" studios, I will plough in tons of money to have rooms with names like: Blues room, Metal room, Top40s room, Tone room, Hardcore room, Progressive Rock room, Hard Rocking room, GenX room, GenY room....etc...etc...
All with it's own assortment of specialize equipments and rental rates. Only problem is to have an eagle eye to spot cross-genre bands dispute before it boils over.

Minimum I'd say, a huge bar, with bartender. A large floor area for moshers, 48 Monitors, 88 Stack amps, 18 mixers and 2 kapok guitars.

Boutique studios

Boutique studios do exist already. And its true, people will never be paying 30/hr, as much as I wished it could happen. And it is also very sad that even though we provide high-end equipment and service, some people just dont respect or appreciate the place and service that we offer.

Thanks to all who have been supportive of Soundmix studio and if you see Darren in a freakin foul mood, thats cos he just dealt with some newbies who think they are professional super stars. (or it could be a hangover....haha)
But there are some who make our day when they say " this place makes me feel special" That, is priceless to us.

And that makes the people at Soundmix provide want to give better studios at a very affordable rate. As I have mentioned, we love to be charging at 30/hr but we cant and we are not.

All in all, love the music, and love and appreciate the place that allows you to hone your craft.

See you all.
