Jammin Studio - Minimum Standards

I've not been to many studios in Singapore. Only those in Sembawang, Jalan Pisang, TNT, Boon, Wee Lee & Seng Chye. Would like to try out other studios. Would anyone care to list the top 3 sudios of their preference in Singapore? And why they like the studio lah. Thanks!

well, i was toying with the ideal of setting up a studio at my home. But I think the neighbours won't like it.

Home studio is kewl but must cultivate good relations with the neighbours before u set up the studio. hehe

Here's my preference, in priority order:
- aircon
- decent keyboard for my keyboardist
- spacious enough (I don't want my precious get knocked and chipped :D)
- decent equipment (amps, drum set. I don't care about guitar and bass though, because most of the time we will bring it)
- Good PA and mic for the vocalist (with at least 2, preferably 3 set of mic, for backing vocal purpose)
- reasonable price (about $15 is still ok)

Studios minimum standards

Have you all been to Soundmix studios?

Well take a look at the pictures on soft... thats the studio you get to jam in.

Studio B will be up at the end of May. So for now come on down at enjoy the huge studio A at only $16/hr and $20/hr for jam recordings.

All those who have been to Soundmix and like it, put it down in black and white here!

God bless!

..

Hey!! Soundmix is supposed to be kept as our "secret jam location" !!!!

Wonderful settings, wonderful ambience, and best, wonderful ppl who do it for a passion. :)

well for my preference,
i like big rooms, cause i hate to stand in one position and play worrying my guitar would slam into the bassist or the vocals. (so far IMO, garage studio size is good enough, much better would be beat merchant)
air con, yes definately.
Any typical jam equipments is fine with me as long as it looks clean and neat. HaHa
because if the room condition look as if it's going to tear down (paints, dirty walls etc), the drums are rusty, skins are wearing off or amps are not well maintained, it really pisses the mood off playing

Hi guys,

Yes....yes.....I do see all the WANTS list..... Big space, good equipments, friendly operators, cool aircon, fresh smell, accessable location....blah...blah..

Firstly, I have to tell you this, it's very very simple.....ARE YOU WILLING TO PAY FOR IT?????? I'm not talking about $15/hr or $18/hr. I am talking about $30/hr to $50/hr..... IF YOU REALLY WANT BOUTIQUE JAMMING STUDIO>>>>>>YOU GOTTA PAY FOR IT!!!!

Let us talk about a simple analogy. You go to the hawker center, basic sanitation standards, no air con, minimum service standards met (thank God for strict SG standards). You can still get a GOOD tasting meal including drinks for $5/= or less (eg. char kuay teow + fresh sugar cane juice).
You go to a mid class resturant, yes better surroundings and service, but you spend $50/= for still the same (ie. A GOOD MEAL)
You go to a high class resturant, 5star surroundings and service, but you spend $150-$300/= for the still the same (ie. A GOOD MEAL).

You can use the same relation between having a meal and a jam session.

So my contribution is this, be very grateful to the people who are providing Jamming studios in singapore, because they should be charging between $25-30/hr for the current standards you are having for at $15-$18/hr.

Heehee......not to mentions people who charge even cheaper (hint...hint...) and provide the same level of standards. We are mainly doing it for our passion in fostering local music upbringing. If not, it's really not worth the money made.

I shall not dwell into the operator grouse on nightmare customers and never ending bills.

So please respect your jamming place by being On-time, care for equipments, don't over-crank or anyhow whack, have simple discipline in the studio. No operator will stop their customers from having a good time, cause a happy customer is a returning customer. But there is a line to be drawn between having a good time and horse playing around.

Regards,
Mike
Mikemann Music Studio
(Still cheapest starting $8/hr)

While some studio owners are committed to music, there are also many who know next to nothing about music & is in the biz only for money. But agree with Mike that we should treat the studio equipment properly and not anyhow wham bang just because we didnt pay for any of the expensive equipment.

watever it is..cool aircon is a must..thanks
some places can switch the aircon making us comfortable to play music for $15-18/hr...if these places can do it..u can too ok? i want aircon..

Out of curiosity, which studio dont have aircon? So far all studios ive been to have aircon.

If you're in an at least 3 or 4 member band, I don't think you'll mind paying $1.50 more each for a $16/hr studio (eg Beat Merchants, which provides not only decent-good equipment and room space (and air con)), rather than a $10/hr one, which is squeezy and has drums which has greenish cymbals (we think it's moss) or cracked ones, or really bad amps, mics with problems, and even bad service.

Examples up there are real-life experiences.

i think all studio have air-con, if not customers will die inside. except some place the air-con just cannot be felt. one place i really like is actually ANN music studio at commonwealth because the people there quite nice, but the air-con sometimes problem. my favourite is wakemeupmusic, cause got stack amps, nice people and P.A is simple but still good enough. Plus, after jamming can see all those cool guitars and local band CDs and magazines.

cheers

wow ....!!!
i think i shall try WAKE ME UP MUSIC 1 of this days, who knoes it a true studio experience for me...

Re: 444

i think sound mix is the biggest jamming studio i've ever been to... and i really mean big for jamming...

i love soundmix. good service. that time i went, there's free recording. don't know if they have this now. it's definitely worth it for the price. and it's so near my place! :D

i went to wakemeup when it jst opened, it smelt funny.... heard it was revamped though.

and i dont really like wee lee serangoon, cos the short uncle there nt very nice...

aljunied wee lee is ok, sam is nice bt the stuff a bit old.

shang studio also nt bad,,, nice guy, bt lousy equipment.

ij production is also quite a nice place, gt all the cool metal bands jamming there. owner is also a rocker... he even asked me to quit school.........

nw, i stick to a studio my friend runs... good shit there. though quite small.

thats all ive tried so far.

let's talk about the equipment. like which model and the cost. this way, we will know roughly how much it cost to set up this "Minimum Standards" studio.

hmm

Peavey P.A systems
Yamaha Drums

amps i dont knoe, different ppl deferent taste.

Wat say e' rest...?
