Is My Soldering Done Really Horribly Wrong?

So if you wanna put solder in one area, you use your iron and heat up that area first before putting letting the solder touch that area? Cause the pot and stuff gets dam hot and I'm afraid it will spoil or something.

the surface area for the point we wanna solder is small and its metal, metal conduct heat well. The heat from the soldering iron will spread faster than not.

THe importance thing is having a soldering iron hot enough and at the instance of soldering, its a simultaneous action of having the lead to the soldering point and having the soldering iron at that point.

Its really hard to spoil the pot, unless wanting to bbq the thing on purposel and having the soldering iron in contact with the pot for extended period of time. And even if extended period of time, either the resistance of the pot will drop or just short out the thing.

If really worried about spoiling pot. Get cheapo pot, $1 a piece type from sim lim tower, solder a few on those first, spoil some first, before using the more expensive pots meant for guitar usage.

heh, we wont learn anything if we dont destroy anything in the process of learning, as long it doesnt burn us badly, everything will be fine...

It does not matter, you can use an big ass wattage soldering iron and you will still face the same problem and in fact, you are going to cause damages to whatever you are doing - You end up "lifting" pad as well.

What you need is an temperature control soldering iron capable of holding its set temperature. Haiko and Pace are good choices but Pace does cost ALOT but is ESD safe.

Please do not use solder flux as an soldering aids. Solder flux are mild acid and will cause corrosion in the long term.

If you stay in Hougang, I can do the soldering for you. This go out to anyone who need help in soldering. However, as I am new to Guitar, you will have to tell me what to do.

nahhh.... if the person practiced enough, any goot(pun intended!) old branded soldering iron will work. Never felt the need for flux. Sponge cleaner is a must. Tipping the solder tip before and after work is a must. A small fan like those instrument panel fans to suck out the solder fumes.

25-30W is goot enough for general use. Goot(yes its a brand! haha) and Hakko makes decent irons. I'm more partial to Hakko than Goot but still testing out a new Goot that I bought, I'm still veering to the cheapass Hakko that've been in service for the past 3 years.

A few hundred pedals and still counting, trusty iron!
