Ipod or Sony Walkman?

After all the comments, can anyone recommend a brand for me? :p

I think I'll get an mp3, but not necessarily an Ipod. I want the flash memory thing so that the mp3 won't jump and stuff playing songs.

Thanks guys!

PS: which apple store is closest to Bishan?

oh an mp3 player using flash memory will also be better if you're an active person. AVOID hard disk based mp3 players at all costs if you are going running and stuff, guaranteed to give you hard disk failure if you do that often enough.

haha nice to see that those who prefer other players to ipod actually bother giving justifications instead of many ipod haters around (like my friend who just goes "i dunno! ipod just sucks! cos it sucks!" when asked why he dislikes ipod so much). fyi, the ipod classic 5G apparently has the best internal amp, you just need to mod it to bring out the quality. you can check out imod for more information. if you are interested, i think jaben stocks them.

Well I have a 30 gb ipod classic. I find it alright, the storage space isn't enough for me, but it's not on my list to upgrade it. I use a mac for home use/design and I feel the ipod's compatibility with it is amazing, also as mentioned by someone in the earlier posts, I use last fm as well.

Ear phones also play a part, my ipod's stock earpieces came apart really quickly so I upgraded and splurged on a shure SE210, which I feel is enough for me. I also have a pair of Bose head phones but they're too bulky to be carried around. I'm also thinking of getting an external amp, but money's pretty tight.

All in all, it's a matter of preferences, but personally I'd go back to the ipod for the capacity, compatibility and the looks.

Hmm, if u really want to talk about the following factors, I would suggest u get neither of them. Get a proper Sony Walkman from shops like Stereo Electronics. Walkman phones are good but their sound clarity lacks the kick, having used a w950i and w760i before.

In comparison:
Sony: Clear audio quality, though it is quite bass bias. Good for bass-reliant music like Rock. Most Walkman players allow you to customise the EQ, so you can get the best out of your musick.
iPod: Sound quality, especially the bass, is crap. If you think its good, there are better players out there. Switched to a Walkman and never turned back. EQ can't be changed easily either. More for treble reliant songs like Jazz, perhaps classical, but still loses out to Sony

Winner: Sony

Playback:
Its a tie between the two players, as both their interfaces are extremely easy to use. However, the iPod has an edge over the walkman as, with all Mac products, everything is so simplyfied that even a baby can use it. And the click-wheel is fancy as well!

Winner: iPod

Reliability:
Sony: So far my Sony Walkman NWZ616-F has yet to give me problems. Hasn't frozen at all. Dropped it many times and yet no scratches, save for one big one on the screen due to a very unfortunate incident.
iPod: Scratches easily, so no-no for perfectionists. My iPod Video hanged way too easily as well. Had to reset it every now and then. As an avid cyclist/runner, I didn't like it as it was hard-disk based and... yea. FROZE. Hard disk is sensitive so don't shake it

Winner: Sony

Others:
Sony: They finally scrapped the SonicStage, so its a matter of dragging and dropping your files into the Walkman. Very simple, but problematic if you want to add in Album Art or Info. The alternative is to use Windows Media Player 11 to put in your files but Anti-Windows ppl will complain

Battery life is very long. It last for at least 30 hours on pure music, full charge.

iPod: iTunes is great, simple to use. Seams all your files in very nicely without much problem, furthermore its free. Takes some time to transfer the files over though.

Battery life sucks. Won't give you more than a day of music

Winner: Sony

Verdict:
Don't buy a iPod. A DEDICATED Sony Walkman wins handsdown anyday

I will think that the Ipod is better. Sony walkman are very original but old-fashion in technology. They only have all the basic functions and maybe watching video. (don't have WiFi or apps).

hmm, you got a point. Cause I'm making a comparison as with a 5.5 iPod.

But one thing I noticed, is that iPod batterys tend to die very easily. The full charge tends to become lesser and lesser with time. My Walkman is one year and a few months old and it still gives me 24 hours (that's the longest I stretched it recently, was doing some DJ-ing at a few NS unofficial functions, think gatherings. Each function was abt 5 hours pure music. My Walkman died on the 5th function, and I hadn't charged it in between)
most iPod batterys, for some unusual reasons, is already crying to be changed after a year

Actually if you don't care about those apple-gimmicks, sony offer those 3minute quick charge kind of thing which is more practical... but it's only available to some sony mp3... But since you have the 980 which is quite a good phone with good sound quality, why will you want an ipod?

If I were the TS, I will just wait for my contract to end and buy an iphone. The most basic element of a music phone is to have a 3.5mm audio jack.

Ipod kicks ass. get a nano!

Sleek,Long playing hours,User friendly,Sounds/looks good,Durable.

What more you want?!?!

1 thing I will miss aboutthe ipod is it's 3rd party support. No other brand has that luxury. Especially the replacement batteries for old ipod. That made my mini last a good 2 years, before I screwed up while trying to fix the line out problem myself. Damn even that was replacable.

I really got some debate going on here lol :p

Anyway, I checked out the prices of some 8gb mp3s just now, found some of them to be quite expensive. Among the ones I was interested in was the ipod nano, a ZEN mp3/mp4 (the cheapest, ~$220), Sony Walkman and a Creative mp3/mp4.

So can anyone recommend one of them and where to buy a NEW ONE? (If i dun put that, I get the weird feeling some kaykiang will say Buy and Sell section :p)

I appreciate all the responses.

Well, if you look at my questions, I'm actually looking for something that SOUNDS good. Doesn't need to look good, feel good.etc.
If possible, can tell me where to get the mp3 cheapest? Money's not much of an object, but as a student, parents will buey song if i blow too much at a time :p

Thanks!

Erm, if you want an apple mp3, they won't give you discounts. You can only bargain for more free gifts. In century square, there's a shop beside Nokia shop, the uncle sell things quite cheap. You can also try sim lim square. Funan too. To have a good sound, you need to have a good guitar and good amp. To have a good sound quality, you need to have a good mp3, high quality music file and good ear/headphones. Actually I got a samsung p2, the EQ settings are very good and got an EQ which is concert hall, and it is really as if you are attending a concert, with the reverb and echo!

My instincts (:p) point me at either the Zen x-fi or the Zune 8, for the price and ease of use. So... any final recommendations? I'll be going to Funan on either tomorrow or Thursday.

(Say anyone can recommend another player BESIDES Ipod)
