I'm starting soon...

Young man! You bring your 2K and meet up with RoRK. We go shopping!

You buy RoRK beer and us, lunch. We talk a lot of RoTS during lunch
You buy your guitar.
You buy a rig (perhaps a Line6 thingy)
You buy a couple of cables
RoRK buy us dinner

You go home happy!

You RIKES?

I'll organise up my points, for easier reading.

Guitar: I still think the studio is a pretty good deal if you don't mind second hand. Tokai/Burny/Edwards are all good substitutes. There's an edwards on the buy/sell right now if i'm not wrong.

Amp: The marshall $215 sounds alot like the MG series.. which is complete piss imo(i own one - the mg15 DFX). I'd highly suggest the roland cube 30 for metal/hard rock influences. Also, the cube should have enough effects, so you can skip any efx's for now.

Pickups: And, i don't think a LP + duncan upgrades is gonna be significantly more expensive than a sg with duncan upgrades. Someone confirm this but, a gibson SG standard should be quite costly. I have nothing to say about B.C. rich.. only that im pretty biased against them with the strange shapes and all o_O.. but you can go ahead if you're sure with what you want.

A set of duncans should cost around 200+, for two humbuckers. Once you get your guitar you can start a new thread about pickups if you wanna swap.

Good Luck, i'll reply to whatever inquiries you might have.

Thanks for the proposal, but I'm only getting the guitar in october, when I'm gonna start learning :p

Anyway, besides that, I found a les paul at blackwood guitars, but it's not so nice to look at though...

Anywhere else I can get one (that looks nicer) from?

Gibsons are from Sweelee or Bras Basah mainly. A brand new LP Std. is gonna cost about 5k from sweelee after discount i think..? A second hand should be around 2.5k or so.

Glad to help.

REALLY!?? OH MY GOSH!!!

THAT'S 2.5 TIMES MY BUDGET!!!

Hmm... which Les Paul Model is within my range (new if possible)
Just don't tell me LP Jr...

EDIT: Is the Gibson LP Studio good?

I agree that the studio is a pretty good point to start from your budget. Don't forget the importance of a decent amp also:)

Go ahead and try out the LPs and other choices you're considering, if you can't play yet, hold it in your hands and pluck a few notes... listen. Do not let the price factor sway your opinion.

My 2 cents.

i dont think u should take swee lee as a benchmark for LP prices.
take a look at US prices .

... That's what scares me most :(

LP Standard (USD $3793)
Studio $1349
Classic $3320
Traditional $3449
Supreme... USD $5190 *faint*

Oh yes, can the epi model Epiphone Prophecy Les Paul Custom EX compare with the Gibson LP Standard? It's WAY cheaper, around 1.5k...

The Epiphone company is part of the Gibson brand. I haven't tried the Prophecy Les Paul but they generally have pretty decent guits. Check out Tokai/Burny/Edwards too.

The Gibson LP Std on the other hand is kinda in a different league in terms of tonality (Can't say about the build quality these days). I've got a LP Std and a Std premium plus and they both give creamy cleans and Cemetary gates Crunch:)

I'll go take a look at Edwards... How about the BC Rich? Any comments anyone?

EDIT: Based on the USA price, a Les Paul Studio (Gibson) should be around $1820 (SGD)
Only question now is... where to buy???

First thing's first.

Are you really sure you're gonna be serious with your guitar playing? If you're just starting out I suggest getting a second hand guitar and a good amp before you go splurging that "hard saved" cash of yours.

Then as you advance and start to find your sound... you better hope you have more than 2k saved up.

By the way check out the Parker Fly =D

Considering your budget is dangerously close to Gibsons, why don't you try Epiphones? Always good to give ur budget some "allowance" so you can splurge on other things. a gd amp is impt.

personally, i don't think there is worlds of difference between gibson and epiphone. you're probably paying more just for the brand.

No point getting any gibsons with a crappy amp like that. Go fender, and you'll never turn back ;D And get a decent amp, tube amps are great! But if you're going for room practice, I have heard great reviews bout the roland cube amps, and I personally use an Orange Tiny Terror tube amp for room practice, and gigs (they are the best at gigs as tube amps that get boosted and cranked, are gonna give you orgasmic creamy and powerful sounds), and it is one monster, so is the price. ;P.

Cheers,
WWH

Ah.. But that's certainly an opinion.. I myself have tried excellent gibbies, and excellent epiphones (and bad ones for each brand as well).. What I can say is an excellent Gibbie resonates MUCH better than an Epi, and is overall better constructed.. I believe that they both have QC issues, but a good Gibbie is simply inspirational to play, and IMO, is indeed a world of difference..

As for the TS, it is good to start with a large budget.. But no point burning a few K on your gear if you are not motivated to actually learn to play at the end of the day.. Make sure you are fully committed before you make your purchase..

I can recommend that if you are getting a Gibson, make sure you get a friend who KNOWS about guitars (not pretend they know) to advice you.. There are plenty of great guitars within your budget at the moment..

General considerations:
Gibsons:
SG Classic (P90s to die for! Have to import this in)
SG Special (might be deemed as a "low-end" SG, but still good)
LP Studio (may be out of your budget)
BFG (versatile, finish may not be your pick)

Fenders:
American Standard Series (single coil heaven)

Edwards (almost everything within your budget, great guitars)

PRS:
SE Series (well worth the money)

Swing:
Prism SE (extremely versatile, nice feel and tone with piezo options)

Ibanez:
RG2550z (someone selling this at only 1.3k at the moment; http://soft.com.sg/forum/guitar-buy-sell/71695-ibanez-rg2550z-reduce-price.html)

Anyways, the forums here have plenty of good deals.. Right now, I can say Pedal-itis and Hub4thailand are selling wicked axes at wicked prices..

You can scout around for such ridiculous offers, and try them out with a friend if you feel you are still inexperienced.. But the most important thing is to know that a good guitar is a good guitar, regardless of the brand written on its headstock.. There was one single $239 Stagg tele (a jem imo) which was truly a great guitar.. I hate teles, but this made me feel like half the Gibbies out there were jokes.. Unfortunately the subsequent Stagg teles weren't as good as that, but still great guitars in their own right..

I've already handled the amp, only need the guitar now, and a teacher, but I'm only taking up in october/november so that can wait.

I can't get a second hand guitar as I don't know how to see if it's ok, as I have absolutely no experience with an electric guitar, and only know the C,D,D7,G,Gminor and Aminor chords :p

What amp did you purchase btw? If it is naturally muddy, it's hard to recommend a bottom-heavy instrument.. If it is a bright sounding amp, using an equally bright instrument might make it excessive.. Although, no matter the equipment, it is best to learn how to tweak the settings to get the best of your rig..:mrgreen:

Roland 30watt cube amp, or marshal 15watt amp but with distortion and headphone jack.
